Waseda University English Theme Spring Semester Weekly Schedule Dr. Rubrecht, Friday 4 and 5 Hello students! My name is Dr. Brian G. Rubrecht(ルブレクト)and I will be your instructor this year. I am so happy to teach you! This sheet explains what we will do for the spring semester 2020. Please read it carefully. This sheet shows the weekly schedule. Each week gives you the activities, goals, and webpages for the on demand videos and answers sheets. We may not use Waseda Moodle much (but we might!). If you follow the weekly activities, you can go at your own pace! And you can ask questions any time. Please do the assignments (on demand videos and quiz answer sheets) BEFORE the class meeting (or at least DURING the class meeting) because I want to try to make time to answer questions using Zoom (the online video conferencing software) the last 20 minutes of class. Using Zoom may not be possible, but we will try. • You can click video links to watch the videos. • You can go to my webpage and download all material from there. The documents will

either be in the “Downloads-General” section link or in the “Downloads-WU-ET” section link.

• If possible, print the docx or pdf files. • I will try to be on Zoom 20 minutes before the end of each class. I want to meet

students, answer questions, and give feedback. Be on Zoom at the end of class if you need help with something. Set an alarm so you won’t be late to the Zoom meetings!

• If you cannot be on Zoom, do not worry, but please talk to me if this is the case. We will have some Zoom classes this semester.

• If you have any problems with links on this page, or if you are not sure about something, please contact me.

Week 1 (May 15)

This is our first class. This means that we need to do introductions, check the syllabus, and do some preparation for the semester and for the year. PLEASE DO ALL OF THIS WEEK’S WORK BEFORE CLASS

TIME IF POSSIBLE! MUCH PREPARATION IS NEEDED! [1] About On Demand Videos https://commonsi.muc.meiji.jp/em/5e9e64a1d2634 Rubrecht Introduction Video 1 https://commonsi.muc.meiji.jp/em/5e9f8456e7bb5 Rubrecht Introduction Video 2 https://commonsi.muc.meiji.jp/em/5e9f83e61656f Rubrecht Webpage Explanation Video https://commonsi.muc.meiji.jp/em/5ea1238d31a4d [2] Syllabus Go to “Downloads-WU-ET” and download this file: ET-ENGLISH THEME SYLLABUS.pdf Syllabus Explanation for my English Theme classes (Video) Syllabus Part 1 https://commonsi.muc.meiji.jp/em/5e9f7ab65c97 Syllabus Part 2 https://commonsi.muc.meiji.jp/em/5e9f71114973a [3] Here is the link to the List of Philosophers (for your reports this semester). ET-List of Philosophers (Video) https://commonsi.muc.meiji.jp/em/5ea634aaa2a79 ET-List of Philosophers.pdf Go to “Downloads-WU-ET” and download this file: ET-List of Philosophers.pdf You must select ONE philosopher for your report. We will decide philosophers in the next class. Please be ready to decide. No two students can do the same philosopher, so do some research on the different philosophers on the LEFT SIDE of the List of Philosophers. If someone chooses the philosopher you wanted to research before you have the chance to choose, you must choose another philosopher. But don’t worry: all the philosophers are good!

You made it this far! So now you can see attendance is an important part of your grade. I want you to be here! I also want feedback from you each lesson, if possible. I want you to watch the on demand videos and learn in this class, even though we are not together in the same classroom. [6] I have made a checklist so you know what needs to be emailed to me (and when). PLEASE BE CAREFUL! These sheets represent part of your grade. Email your sheets on the day of class, please! Checklist of Files to Email (WU-ET Spring 2020) Go to “Downloads-WU-ET” and download this file: Checklist of Files to Email (WU-ET Spring 2020).docx [7] This sheet and video are for when you use video conferencing software like Zoom (for my class or for other classes). Pre-Class Checklist Go to “Downloads-General” and download this file: Pre-Class Checklist.pdf Pre-Class Checklist Video https://commonsi.muc.meiji.jp/em/5e9f8131bb9ff [8] The next videos and sheets are about my class rules. These will be especially important when we meet in classes (which we might do in the future!). [9] Next, you need to learn and practice English expressions. Student Help Sheet Go to “Downloads-General” and download this file: Student Help Sheet-download.pdf Student Help Sheet Video https://commonsi.muc.meiji.jp/em/5e9f83d56ebd7 [10] Next, we should all try Zoom. I want everyone to know how to do this.

• Try to be in the Zoom classroom by 20 minutes before the end of class. If you cannot log in today, don’t worry. It will not affect your grade.

• Check Waseda Moodle or Course Navi (or possibly my webpage at the “Downloads-WU-ET” link) for Zoom Meeting ID information.

• Remember: the purpose of Zoom is to see each other and for me to check if you have any questions or problems, and to give feedback when necessary.

• If Zoom does not work, it’s ok. Relax! We might have to just try a few things to see if they work.

[11] Next week we need to choose philosophers, so I WANT EVERYONE TO BE ON ZOOM NEXT WEEK! Be on Zoom at the beginning of class time! Check Waseda Moodle or Course Navi for the Zoom information (or my webpage at the “Downloads-WU-ET” link). Be aware:

1. If you cannot be on Zoom, or if you have problems with Zoom and cannot join, don’t worry this time. Just realize that I might have to choose a philosopher for you.

2. If your teacher has Zoom problems, it’s ok. I will randomly assign a philosopher to students (but I prefer if students choose a philosopher themselves).

[12] Do you see? Because Zoom might not work and because some students might not be able to log in to Zoom, we need the ARS. That is your attendance grade! [13] Next, choose ONE version of the sheet, fill it out, and email it today with your ARS. Why I Chose this English Theme Class Go to “Downloads-WU-ET” and download this file: ET-Why I Chose this English Theme Class.docx Go to “Downloads-WU-ET” and download this file: ET-Why I Chose this English Theme Class.pdf This sheet is not for a grade. I just want to get some information about my students. This is especially important this semester because I cannot meet my students in person in the classroom.

Page 8: ET-2020 Spring Weekly Schedulerubrecht/ALL DOWNLOADS/Downloads-WU...Lecture 05 – Aristotle (there are 2 on demand videos) Week 7: I want this to be Zoom week. I want to be online

Email your sheet to me. Do this whenever you have a lesson with answer sheets. Please RENAME the answer sheet. For example: For example:

Taro Tanaka Friday 4 May 15 Why.docx [14] Please read about next week’s class (below). Be prepared. There are more videos to watch. Watch them BEFORE the class next week. [15] Fill out the ARS.

• Don’t forget to change the file name! Please write your ARS file name something like this:

Taro Tanaka Friday 4 May 15 ARS.docx

• Email it to me when you are finished: [email protected] [16] If you have any trouble or difficulty, or if you need to contact me, please email me or talk to me on Zoom. If you have questions or problems, your classmates might have the same ones! Thank you, students!

Week 2 (May 22)

For today’s lesson, we will be choosing our philosophers. This may take a long time (possibly most of class time). That’s ok. We can try to use some time to introduce each other, talk about the class, etc. [1] We choose our philosophers! Please keep track of which philosophers have been chosen! [2] After you have chosen your philosopher (and class is finished), you can start watching the on demand videos of the lessons. [3] There are quizzes for each era of the on demand lessons. Here is the explanation: ET-Quiz Answer Sheet Explanation https://commonsi.muc.meiji.jp/em/5ea637b39dfa3 [END] Fill out the ARS.

• Don’t forget to change the file name! Please write your ARS file name something like this:

Week 3 (May 29)

From now, for the rest of the semester, we have to do the era lessons (you take notes on these lessons!), check the quizzes, learn about how to write the report, and share what we have learned.

THE WEEKLY SCHEDULE IS HERE: Week 3: Lecture 00 – Explanation (there is 1 on demand video) Lecture 01 – Introduction (there is 1 on demand video) Week 4: You will learn how to write the reports. There are many videos to watch about this. I would also like to check quiz answers (Quizzes 06-11, if students have questions about the quizzes). Week 12: Students will email me their reports BEFORE CLASS STARTS. I also need your CLASS NOTES at this time as well. I want to take some time on Zoom this day to discuss the class and have students talk about what they learned together.

Page 11: ET-2020 Spring Weekly Schedulerubrecht/ALL DOWNLOADS/Downloads-WU...Lecture 05 – Aristotle (there are 2 on demand videos) Week 7: I want this to be Zoom week. I want to be online

A few points about the weekly schedule: (1) You must take notes about what is taught in each lesson (Lessons 01 to 11).

THESE NOTES WILL BE FOR A GRADE. You may write your notes on notebook paper if you want, but later you will have to either take photos of those pages or scan them. At the end of the semester you will email your notes to me (this is part of your grade for the semester). If you type your notes in Microsoft Word, it will be easy to email to me, but any way that you want to take notes is fine. Your notes can be in any language (i.e., in English or Japanese).

(2) You can go at your own pace. You do not have to watch the on demand videos and do the quizzes during class time. Any time is fine! However, you have deadlines for the quizzes (and the ARS). They must be sent by the end of the class period (or, if you watch the videos during class but have another class immediately after ours, you can send to me by the end of the same day. DO NOT BE LATE WITH QUIZZES! Late quizzes receive fewer points.

(3) You must watch the videos and do the quizzes BY YOURSELF. Do not ask classmates or other people for help. Do not use the Internet to answer the questions. If you watch the videos AND TAKE NOTES, you should be able to answer all of the quiz questions.

(4) If you have questions about how to do the videos or quizzes, please ask me. (5) If you have difficulty with Zoom, email me. I know that some students might not

be able to do Zoom every week, or for an entire class period. Please let me know if this is the case.

[1] This is Week 3, so you have 2 on demand videos to watch: Lecture 00 – Explanation https://commonsi.muc.meiji.jp/em/5e9f6762c4225 Lecture 01 – Introduction (Complete) https://commonsi.muc.meiji.jp/em/5e9f62bf99297 [2] You have just one quiz to do this week (for Lesson 01). Email your quiz answer sheet to me. Do this whenever you have a lesson with answer sheets. Please RENAME the answer sheet. For example:

Taro Tanaka Friday 4 May 29 Quiz 01.docx [3] Next, log into Zoom if you want to.

• Be in the Zoom classroom by 20 minutes before the end of class. • If you cannot log in, don’t worry. It will not affect your grade. • Check Waseda Moodle or Course Navi (or possibly my webpage at the

“Downloads-WU-ET” link) for Zoom Meeting ID information. • Remember: the purpose of Zoom is to see each other and for me to check if you have

any questions or problems, and to give feedback when necessary. • If Zoom does not work for us, it’s ok. Relax!

Week 4 (June 5)

This is the week that discusses how to write the reports. Please watch all these videos BEFORE class time. At the end of the class meeting we can get on Zoom and students can ask questions if they have any. You can watch the on demand videos in almost any order. There is no recommended order. You can watch them several times if you need to. [4] Next, log into Zoom if you want to.

Relax!

Week 11 (July 24)

This is the in-class Zoom week. Log in to Zoom at the beginning of class. Check Waseda Moodle or Course Navi (or possibly my webpage at the “Downloads-WU-ET” link) for Zoom Meeting ID information. REMEMBER: This is the LAST CHANCE to ask me any questions about the report. If you make a mistake with the report that negatively influences your grade (for example, you have no citations, you have no references, you plagiarize either on purpose or on accident), you will NOT BE ALLOWED TO CHANGE YOUR REPORT AFTER YOU SUBMIT IT. Severe mistakes could mean that you fail the class. Please check the Report Grading Video and Report Grading Sheet and make sure you understand them. [1] To be super mega ultra clear, let me remind you that next week you will give me (by email) two things:

(1) your report. This report is at least 1,000 words long, has citations and references, and it follows the academic English writing style taught for this class.

(2) your class notes. You can take photos of your pages, you can scan them… It does not matter (if you typed them all in Microsoft Word, that’s easy! Just email me your document!).

[END] Fill out the ARS.

• Don’t forget to change the file name! Please write your ARS file name something like this:

• Email it to me when you are finished: [email protected]

This is the final class.

EMAIL ME YOUR REPORT BEFORE CLASS STARTS!

Log in to Zoom at the beginning of class. Check Waseda Moodle or Course Navi (or possibly my webpage at the “Downloads-WU-ET” link) for Zoom Meeting ID information. Let’s talk about our reports, our philosophers, and what we learned in this class this semester. [END] Fill out the ARS.
