Hello students! My name is Dr. Brian G. Rubrecht（ルブレクト）and I will be your instructor this year. I am so happy to teach you! This sheet explains what we will do for the spring semester 2020. Please read it carefully. This sheet shows the weekly schedule. Each week gives you the activities, goals, and webpages for the on demand videos and answers sheets. We may not use Waseda Moodle much (but we might!). If you follow the weekly activities, you can go at your own pace! And you can ask questions any time. Please do the assignments (on demand videos and quiz answer sheets) BEFORE the class meeting (or at least DURING the class meeting) because I want to try to make time to answer questions using Zoom (the online video conferencing software) the last 20 minutes of class. Using Zoom may not be possible, but we will try. I want everyone to know how to do this.

• Try to be in the Zoom classroom by 20 minutes before the end of class. If you cannot log in today, don’t worry. It will not affect your grade.

• Check Waseda Moodle or Course Navi (or possibly my webpage at the “Downloads-WU-ET” link) for Zoom Meeting ID information.

• Remember: the purpose of Zoom is to see each other and for me to check if you have any questions or problems, and to give feedback when necessary.

• If Zoom does not work, it’s ok. Relax! We might have to just try a few things to see if they work.

[11] Next week we need to choose philosophers, so I WANT EVERYONE TO BE ON ZOOM NEXT WEEK! Be on Zoom at the beginning of class time! Check Waseda Moodle or Course Navi for the Zoom information (or my webpage at the “Downloads-WU-ET” link). Be aware:

1. If you cannot be on Zoom, or if you have problems with Zoom and cannot join, don’t worry this time. Just realize that I might have to choose a philosopher for you.

2. If your teacher has Zoom problems, it’s ok. I will randomly assign a philosopher to students (but I prefer if students choose a philosopher themselves).

Week 2 (May 22)

For today’s lesson, we will be choosing our philosophers. This may take a long time (possibly most of class time). That’s ok. We can try to use some time to introduce each other, talk about the class, etc. [1] We choose our philosophers! Please keep track of which philosophers have been chosen! Week 3 (May 29)

From now, for the rest of the semester, we have to do the era lessons (you take notes on these lessons!), check the quizzes, learn about how to write the report, and share what we have learned.

There are many videos to watch about this. I want to be online with students. This is the day when I answer questions about writing the report. I can check any drafts that you have about the report, and explain in person things that some students might not understand. A few points about the weekly schedule: (1) You must take notes about what is taught in each lesson (Lessons 01 to 11).

THESE NOTES WILL BE FOR A GRADE. You may write your notes on notebook paper if you want, but later you will have to either take photos of those pages or scan them. At the end of the semester you will email your notes to me (this is part of your grade for the semester). If you type your notes in Microsoft Word, it will be easy to email to me, but any way that you want to take notes is fine. Your notes can be in any language (i.e., in English or Japanese).

(2) You can go at your own pace. You do not have to watch the on demand videos and do the quizzes during class time. Any time is fine! However, you have deadlines for the quizzes (and the ARS). They must be sent by the end of the class period (or, if you watch the videos during class but have another class immediately after ours, you can send to me by the end of the same day. DO NOT BE LATE WITH QUIZZES! Late quizzes receive fewer points.

(3) You must watch the videos and do the quizzes BY YOURSELF. Do not ask classmates or other people for help. Do not use the Internet to answer the questions. If you watch the videos AND TAKE NOTES, you should be able to answer all of the quiz questions.

(4) If you have questions about how to do the videos or quizzes, please ask me. (5) If you have difficulty with Zoom, email me. I know that some students might not

be able to do Zoom every week, or for an entire class period. Please let me know if this is the case.

Week 11 (July 24)

REMEMBER: This is the LAST CHANCE to ask me any questions about the report. If you make a mistake with the report that negatively influences your grade (for example, you have no citations, you have no references, you plagiarize either on purpose or on accident), you will NOT BE ALLOWED TO CHANGE YOUR REPORT AFTER YOU SUBMIT IT. Severe mistakes could mean that you fail the class. Please check the Report Grading Video and Report Grading Sheet and make sure you understand them. [1] To be super mega ultra clear, let me remind you that next week you will give me (by email) two things:

(1) your report. This report is at least 1,000 words long, has citations and references, and it follows the academic English writing style taught for this class.

(2) your class notes. You can take photos of your pages, you can scan them… It does not matter (if you typed them all in Microsoft Word, that’s easy! Just email me your document!).
