Life and education

Henri Marie Coandwas a Romanian inventor,aerodynamics pioneer and builder of an experimental aircraft.

He is best known for the Coanda-1910 aircraft, the world firstjet.

He was born in Bucharest as a second child, in a family withintelectual background (his father was a mathematician andgrandfather a french physician)

He graduated the Military High-School in Iasi and the School ofArtillery, Military, and Naval Engineering in Bucharest, also

graduating the Technische Hochschule in Charlottenburg,Berlin.

In 1910 he graduated at the head of the first class ofaeronautical engineers in the newly founded cole NationaleSuperieure d'Ingenieurs en Construction Aronautique

Henri Coanda was a scientist with a polivalent background.

He had discoveries in various domains : aeronautics,

constructions, transportation, industry, medicine.

Many of his patents are the fundaments of different machines

and tools that are used in todays industry of day to day life.

The Coanda Effect with applications in ventilation, vacuum

cleaners, vacuum pumps, propulsion systems, noise softening,

compresors and in the domain of medicine, artificial hearts.

Modular houses made

with prefabricatedmaterials, which can be

assembled in 5 hours.

Aerodina lenticulara - a "flying

saucer" that used an

unspecified source of high

pressure gases to flow through

a ring-shaped vent system. In

1936 Coand applied for a

patent for his design. Although

no full-scale version was everbuilt.

It had no moving

parts and was

capable of take-offand landing of a

stationary point

In transportation, the aerodepresive propulsion has been the basis of

transporting containers in a tube.

This can be done by putting containers in a airless vacuumed tube.

His research have helped in the development of wind turbines andwater desalinisation.

Coand-1910

The Coand-1910was an experimental plane powered by aducted fan.

It featured an experimental aircraft engine which Coand called the

"turbo-propulseur," a centrifugal compressor propulsion systemwith a multi-bladed rotary fan situated in a duct and driven by a

conventional piston engine.

Even though its capability of flying is disputated, it is clear that the Coanda

1910 had a revolutionary desing and propelment idea which have pushed

forward the development of todays jets.

Conclusions

Coanda is one of the most famous Romanian engineer, a pioneer and a

visionar, changing the world and giving us one of the most important

modes of transportation.
