1 When I first looked at the earth from space, it looked like a ball of water in the dark sky ― a blue and white ball. The blue comes from the water and the atmosphere, and the white comes from the clouds. The atmosphere is thin. It’s only about 100 kilometers thick. It’s important because we cannot live without it.

2 The earth still has lots of green forests and clean water. This doesn’t mean, however, that the earth isn’t in great danger. In the green forests along the Amazon, for example, I can see something like holes in the places where people have cleared trees for farms. These areas shine white from space. I notice the number of these areas is increasing. The earth is in great danger and we need to help protect it.

3 After reaching space, of course, I first looked for Japan. If you want to find Japan, you can start from Siberia. You can see Japan appear at the end of the Kamchatka Peninsula. Okinawa is just above Taiwan. From South Korea, move your eyes to the right, and you’ll see Northern Kyushu. Japan doesn’t stand alone.

4 From space, I can see no borders. All countries are part of one world. To protect the environment and keep peace in the world, we must remember this. We have to work together with others, just as I’m working with astronauts from other countries inside this space shuttle.

5 I enjoyed doing experiments inside the space shuttle. For example, I once tried to put a cherry blossom into a two-centimeter ball of water. That didn’t work, but I was able to do it with a five-centimeter ball. We experiment and we learn. This is how humans live.

6 I hope you can come aboard a space shuttle one day. Together we’ll be able to watch the earth from space. When I was a young boy, I dreamed of coming to space. After Yuri Gagarin became the first person to fly in space, I thought I could one day come to space. Well, here I am. I’m sure if you wish to fly, your dream will come true, too. Fly for your dreams, and fly for us humans.
