If you think you know what to expect when you visit the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, think again! In addition to covering issues relating to shipping and Hong Kong’s maritime history, we also offer free workshops and tours for schools, family activities, talks and discussions on a wide variety of topics. The museum has a whole host of activities and events throughout the year to enhance your visit.

Permanent GalleriesAs the name suggests, our permanent exhibitions are on throughout the year. Each of the galleries provides rich educational resources which are linked to specific subjects and modules in the school curriculum and cross-curricular themes. The permanent galleries are packed full of fascinating objects arranged according to the following themes:

• Traditional Maritime China• The China Trade, leading to the Opium Wars• Sea Bandits• Creating Victoria Harbour• China’s First Maritime Modernisation• Hong Kong Ships and Shipyards• Harbour Viewing Gallery

In the galleries the maritime story is told with displays of objects from the museum’s collections, with labels and text panels to explain the themes in Chinese and English. Use the website to find out more about our galleries and collections to plan your visit. Our exhibitions will typically include models, paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics, photographs, nautical instruments, maps, charts and photographs.

Our special temporary exhibitions change regularly and are well worth a visit in themselves. These theme-based exhibitions are both entertaining and educational. As with the permanent galleries, they are designed to engage students and maximise learning opportunities.

Plastic Oceans: 14 August– 31 December 2015 Did you know that every year 8 million tons of plastics go into our Oceans ? What is the effect on the marine environment and on humans and what can we do about it? Gallery activities available for schools. Please specify on your booking form.

Trading China: Paintings of the Porcelain Production Process in the Qing Dynasty: 23 October 2015– 1 May 2016Find out how porcelain was produced at the famous Jingdezhen kilns in the 18th century. This exhibition showcases a series of 34 paintings recently acquired by the Museum. They document the process of making and trading porcelain from the famous Jingdezhen kilns, from mining the clay to selling the porcelain to foreign merchants through local dealers. Painted for the Western market, these illustrations vividly capture the work of the many specialised labourers as well as the way in which the trade and transport of the finished porcelain was arranged. Tours for this exhibition can be booked. Please specify on your booking form.

本展覽透視十八世紀景德鎮名瓷的生產之謎。主要展出香港海事博物館最近獲贈的 34 幅清代製瓷連環圖,這組畫為外銷品,透過生動的畫面,自陶工鑿土以至銷貨洋商呈現出景德鎮窰塲的精細分工、瓷器銷運等情景。提供導賞團,請在申請表上註明。

All of our exhibitions and learning resources provide excellent opportunities for students to interrogate objects and to engage in enquiry and evidence-based learning. In doing so, students will develop problem solving and critical thinking skills which can be transferred to other parts of the curriculum.

Our Education and Public Programmes team are always on hand to coordinate visits, lead gallery tours and provide full support to teachers. 參觀前的準備Preparing for your visit

Before your visit, visit our website to view the latest information about our permanent and special exhibitions. You will find descriptions and images relating to each of our collections as well as downloadable activity sheets that will help you to plan the visit for your students.

預訪

我們強烈建議所有教師在帶同學生參觀前作預訪,使他們能夠熟悉我們每一個展廳和規劃自己的活動。

你的學生要有準備

參觀前一定要充分知會所有 學生和隨行工作人員及傭工, 確保每個人都知道他們是來 海事博物館,還有:

• 他們來到這裏時會看到甚麼 ;

• 他們將會做甚麼 ;

• 他們小組有甚麼成員 ;

• 參觀博物館時的禮儀。

爭取最多的學習機會

我們建議學校團體花至少一小時參觀。學生需要時間來研究每個展廳或完成他們的習作。

我們鼓勵教師留出足夠的時間參觀,為學生爭取最多的學習機會。我們亦提供博物館導賞團預約。

Make a Preliminary Visit

We strongly advise all teachers to make a preliminary visit to the Museum prior to their class visit so that they can familiarise themselves with each of our galleries and plan their class activities.

Prepare Your Students

Be sure to fully brief all students and accompanying staff and any parent helpers before your visit. Make sure everyone knows that they are coming to the Maritime Museum, as well as:• what they will see

when they get here;• what activities and tasks they

will be expected to complete;• which other students are in

their group;• how they are expected to

behave.

Maximise Learning Opportunities During your Visit

We recommend that school groups spend at least one hour in the Museum. Students will need time to study each of the galleries they enter and complete individual or group tasks which have been set.

Teachers are encouraged to allow sufficient time for the gallery visit so that they can maximise the learning opportunities for the students. A Museum-led tour can also be booked.

有效教學的禮儀 Etiquette for Effective Teaching and Learning

我們要求所有老師和學生們參觀時遵循以下規則:

• 每 20 名中學生最少要有 1名教師 /助理 ;每 15 名小學生最少要有 1名教師 /助理;

• 以 5名學生為一小組,參觀期間,在場老師 /助理 /家長助手需監督各小組的行為;

• 教師應積極參與由博物館工作人員所提供的導賞團,不應缺席;

• 教師須與博物館導遊緊密合作,維持學生紀律;

• 請你的學生顧及其他旅客,不要吵鬧和奔跑 ;

• 館內不准飲食 ;

• 大件行李最好留在提供的儲物櫃 ;

• 除非另有說明,否則不應觸摸展品。

只限已預約學校 :

• 旅遊巴落客點(不提供泊車位);

• 教育室 ;

• C 層洗手間 ;

• 可借用墊板,如果需要的話請在申請表格注明 ;

• 我們的商店有出售小紀念品。

We request all teachers and students to follow the following rules of etiquette during their gallery visit:• As a general guideline, a minimum ratio of 1 teacher / assistant per 20 students for secondary

schools; and 1 teacher / assistant per 15 students for primary schools should be adopted;• Classes of students should be broken up into sub-groups of approximately 5 students, where

possible, during their visit, with a teacher / assistant / parent helper on hand to monitor the progress and behaviour of each sub-group;

• Teachers should remain actively involved in the gallery tour being provided by Museum staff and should not absent themselves while students are being guided in the Museum;

• Teachers are expected to maintain student discipline and work closely with the Museum guide to maintain an orderly and effective gallery tour;

• Please ask your students to be considerate to other visitors in the Museum, avoid loud voices and running;

• Eating and drinking are not permitted anywhere in the Museum galleries;• Bulky bags are best left in the lockers provided;• Objects and displays should not be touched unless indicated.
