Drivers face losing double demerit points from theirlicence from midnight on Thursday, April 17 to midnight onMonday, April 21 if they are caught doing the wrong thing.

Det Insp Hayes says drivers are encouraged to takenecessary breaks, particularly when driving long distances.

‘‘Coming into the busy period it’s timely to remind peopleto be safe on the roads,’’ he said.

‘‘People who are travelling long distances must takebreaks every two hours and under no circumstance shouldpeople drink alcohol and drive.

‘‘Easter and Christmas are generally periods where thereare more road accidents.’’

Deniliquin and Murray Shire Council road safety officerKen Spence agreed with Det Insp Hayes’ message, sayingpeople should be careful when travelling, particularly withan influx of people around the district.

‘‘Every long weekend there’s an influx of people toDeniliquin,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s also the last weekend before winter so people will beeager to travel.

‘‘A lot of people will be leaving Melbourne Thursdaynight, and even Wednesday night is likely to be busy.

‘‘The Blues & Roots Festival will also be held in Deniliquinand there will be a shuttle bus running to and from the eventso there is absolutely no excuse for people to drink alcoholand then drive to the event.’’

Mr Spence says Deniliquin Council will have a breath-testing tent at the festival site.
