THEME SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT Grades 7 and 8 How to Select a Summer Novel: Please choose a grade-level novel to read over the summer. Pick something you want to read! Please do not choose any of the following class novels: Grade 7: Grade 8: Fever 1793 To Kill A Mockingbird The Giver The Pearl The Outsiders The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle Please do not choose a novel that is also a film. You can check for this by researching the book tile on www.imdb.com . If you need assistance, please email either Miss Wilkins or Mrs. Knox. Your assignment will be to read a novel, take notes, and write a theme essay. Please bring your novel, notes, and essay to class on the first day. What is theme? The moral, message, or lesson the author wants you to learn from the story. Think of it as the heartof the story. The theme is usually unsaid by the author, but the reader can infer it from what they are reading. We may think of this as reading between the lines. Here’s some questions to ask yourself when looking for theme: *What did the character learn? *How did the characters grow or change? *What message is the author trying to send? *What important part of life is this story sharing? Here are some common theme topics: courage honesty love equality forgiveness hope family friendship hard work kindness acceptance respect being yourself compassion culture or tradition overcoming challenges teamwork responsibility

Example of a theme statement: 

Using the story “Cinderella,” think of what the author was trying to tell us about kindness.   Kindness is important is the theme of the story because in the end, Cinderella won, while her evil stepmother and stepsisters lost everything they had always wanted. ↑↑↑ that’s the theme statement 

Book Report Directions: 

1. Choose and read a book of your choice. 2. Take notes as you read. Think about what the author is trying to teach 

the reader. You are to complete at least 2  full pages of notes (front and back). Note paper is attached. 

3. Take more notes citing examples of the theme. (your proof) Make sure to include the page numbers so you know where you found the information. 

4. Take even more notes and add quotations or dialogue that helps to prove your theme. You will need at least  3  quotations in your essay. 

5. Gather enough evidence of theme to write your thesis statement.  (your one sentence that explains what the author was sharing through their novel) 

6. Write your theme essay.  Your essay should be in 5-paragraph format. Please remember to add your thesis in the first paragraph.   

Your essay should: ● include your name and a title ● include the author’s name and novel title ● meet the 5-paragraph expectation ● have a thesis that shares the novel’s theme (add to first paragraph) ● include at least 3 quotations from the novel.
