Mirriam’s heart is a safe houseDEVIDEAN MOSES

Mirriam Toni (43), who is knownfor her Mirriam’s Safe House inMbekweni, recently received anaward from Mama Africa inGeorge for her work within thecommunity of Mbekweni.

This Clover Mama Afrika-projectidentifies women who are alreadymaking a difference in their commu-nities and helps them to become selfsustaining with skills they can de-rive incomes from, in order to sup-port orphaned and abused childrenas well as the elderly.

Not only does she run a safe-housefor destitute children, but she has in-itiated various other projects to up-lift women within the community.

She arrived in Mbekweni 1987. Af-ter joiningagospel choir shedecidedto stay in Mbkeweni. She soon real-ised that there was a need in Mbek-weni for a centre that cares for aban-doned children and needy adults.

As a former abused child herself, she loves and nurtures children who

have suffered the same fate. She started off her safe house in a

humble home of half brick and halfmetal sheeting. The communityhelped her to enlarge the house asmore children took refuge with her.

But in 2010 tragedy struck, whenMirriam’s safe house was set ablaze, presumably by a neighbour who hadmade a fire next to her house. Oneof her foster children was killed.

This was an enormous set-back forMirriam but she got on her feetagain, and with the help of the com-munity and church organisations, her home was rebuilt.

She, along with the other mamas, have been trained in cooking andbaking, sewing, gardening, quilting, flower arranging, crocheting, bead-work, artwork and first aid. She alsocompleted a basic finance manage-ment course.

Mirriam describes herself as a lov-ing mother for her 16 foster childrenand three children of her own. Heraim is to make a difference in thecommunity. Mama Africa says thatchildren must know their identity,

and need love as a foundation for astable footing in life.

“As a young girl I was involved ina Sunday school and my mother al-ways gave me extra food to sharewith those who were in need,” saysMirriam. “And this was the begin-ning of my road to caring for andhelping others.”

She also started an aftercare soc-cer club in Mbekweni, the All Stars, tokeepchildrenoff thestreets.Todaythe soccer club has grown to morethan 65 members. Not only does shesee that the players practise regular-ly and stay fit, but she also sees thatthey go to school and do their home-work. She has arranged for them tohave lessons inbasic computer skillswith the help of Shaun Petersen.

Her latest project is a designerschoolwhere theymake matric fare-well dresses.

Mirriam’s dream is to have a big-ger venue where she can run differ-ent courses, and in doing so, empow-er the community around her. “Iwant to open a multi-race centre forthe needy people in Drakenstein.”

Here isMirriamToni showingoff only someof the work she inspires in Mbekweni.

Mirriam is proud of her soccer club, All Stars, who have won sevaral trophies.PHOTOS: DEVIDEAN MOSES

A very concrete practical limitation, for example, money, a health challenge, orresponsibility for another may unexpectedly prevent you from being as free as youwish. No doubt your patience will be severely tested, but if you manage to come to

some uneasy balance or partial solution, the tension will ease.

This is the time to be doing something new and unusual. You mayget an impulse to experiment with something new, or a friend mayinvite you to do something you haven't done before. Go along; you

will love it and you will be glad you went.

(21 January - 20 February)

AQUARIUS

This is the time to be doing something new and unusual. You may get animpulse to experiment with something new, or a friend may invite you to dosomething you haven't done before. Go along; you will love it and you will

be glad you went.

PISCES(20 February - 21 March)

You know just what you want right now and woe to anyone or anything that getsin your way! You are much more likely to become domineering, pushy, or

inconsiderate of others now, so it is a good time for you to do what you need todo by yourself rather than with others.

ARIES(21 March - 21 April)

You may feel temporarily blocked now. Resistance and challenges fromothers or from outside situations suggest that this is not a good time to try toforce your will and desires upon the world, as friction is the only likely result.

Relations with men can be especially tense.

TAURUS(21 April - 21 May)

Communications, conversations, sending and receiving messages, and taking care ofroutine tasks that require mental clarity are important activities now. It is a good time to

present your ideas and point of view to others, as you express your thoughts clearly, thoughyou are not apt to listen as well. Buying, selling, or negotiating is likely to go well now.

GEMINI(21 May - 22 June)

You are contentious, argumentative, and impatient now. Disagreements eruptbecause you aren't willing to overlook minor irritations as readily as usual.

Confrontations with others may be fruitful if you don't allow your anger to getout of control. You are highly competitive at this time.

LEO(23 July - 24 August)

Self-confidence, physical energy, and courage run high, so this is a fine time toundertake any project or challenge that confronts you, especially if it involves

competition or asserting yourself vigorously. You are inclined to take charge orassume a leadership role at this time.

VIRGO(24 August - 23 September)

Your desire for pleasure, ease, and affection is brought to the fore and may interfere withwork or complicated situations in which you need to be acting assertively and on your

own behalf. Your mood and attitude is conciliatory, and your need for love and approvalheightened. Social gatherings and personal relationships are favored.

CANCER(22 June - 23 July)

Your desire for love, companionship, and affection predominates at this time. A newfriendship or romance could begin, or an established relationship can be revitalized andenhanced. If there is someone you have wanted to reach out to, doing so now is likely to

create warm feelings between you and may be the start of something beautiful.

LIBRA(23 September - 23 October)

Your vitality and self-confidence are high, and you can achieve your goals with muchmore ease than usual. You enjoy vigorous physical activities, competitive work orsports, and meeting challenges. You are inclined to strike out on your own and to

assert your own will, but not in a way that creates resistance in others.

SCORPIO(23 October - 23 November)

If you are a writer, teacher or student or are involved in any intellectual work, this isa positive time for you: ideas flow and it is easier than usual to express your

thoughts. Also, this is a good time for buying, selling, negotiating, andcommunications of all kinds.

Anyone of us knows the importance ofmak-ing good decisions.

For a business owner it is even more impor-tantbecausebaddecisionscancosthimhisbusi-ness; his source of income.

But there is a way to minimize this risk; it iscalledgoodadministration.Yes,manypeopledonot like administrative work, but this is a busi-ness’ source of information.

Every transaction isapieceofdata thatbuildsthe picture of what is happening in the business.

But the recording of transactions is just thefirst step in a whole process that forms part ofthe bigger administrative and information sys-tem of the business.

And what we want is information of what hap-pened in the past to make predictions for the fu-ture, e.g. a budget. Without accurate and wellrecorded information you make bad decisionsdue to wrong information.

Unfortunately business owners often neglectthisaspectandarenotwillingtopaygoodmoneyfor good administration. Administration is a lotmore than just knowing how much money youhave in your bank account.

Businesses are subject to a multitude of lawsand bylaws that they need to comply with. Oneof the easiest ways to determine whether a busi-ness has a good administrative system is to lookat their compliance to government systems, or-dinances and laws.

You need to have somebody to keep your ad-ministration up to date. If not, it may cost youdearly sometime in the future.

Either you’ll have to pay someone to sort outall the neglected paperwork, or pay penaltiesand interest to SARS for undeclared income, orgo bankrupt due to a lack of knowledge aboutthe true state of your business.

Administrative personnel need to be peoplewho have a savvy for detail and paperwork.Good administrators are usually people withgood qualifications.

Unfortunately business owners seldom re-gard administration as important enough to al-locategoodremunerationtoadministrativeper-sonnel.

A good record keeping and administrativesystem is a necessity for any business. Withoutit you head for disaster without even beingaware of it.

You can start by yourself keeping all paper-work filed away and clearly marked into sec-tions.

David Malherbe and Dewald Scholtz will dis-cuss this topic in more detail Monday eveningfrom 19:00 till 20:00 on Radio KC 107.7FM in theprogram “You the Entrepreneur”.

Hot Mess Mama“Fine!” That was the standardresponse I’d got from momswhen I asked how they were.

I’d just nod and smile but insideI would gasp, “How do they do it?”I am the mother of beautiful

twin girls. That’s right; twins. From no babies to two babies;from lazing on the couch onweek-ends to not having enough time orenergy to doanythingnot baby-re-lated.Likewashingdishes.Ormy-self.Iwasahotmessmamawhenmy

babies were small. Clueless, sleepdeprived, and a little punchdrunkfrom the conflicting parent infor-mation out there; I was definitelynot “fine”.But, after 12 months, our twins

are alive, we are alive, and thehouse is still standing. It feels like we’ve painstakingly

clawed our way up a mountain ofrocks, blindfolded and without amap, and have finally reached thetop, covered in fatiguemixedwithawe and elation.Becauseitdidn’tcomenaturally

tomeIhadto learnhowtosurvive. For those of you who, like me, arenot “fine”, I give to you what I’velearnt along the way:

) Coffee, and lots of itSleep deprivation is used by

marble-facedmilitary peoplewithbrutal efficiency. If I just knewwhat they wanted me to confess,I would have gladly!Whetheryou like instant, perco-

lated, beans or ground, thiswill beyour constant companion in theearly days. If you’re breast-feed-ing then one cup of coffee a day isfine, so make sure it’s the goodstuff. If you’re not breast-feedingthen two or three cups of coffee aday is perfect, but more than thatbecomes counterproductive andmay keep you from sleep.

) Friends, family and fore-sightFor advice, a shoulder to cry on,

or an empathetic sounding board, there’snothing thatcomesclose tofriends and family.I calledmybest friendandasked

her, in awobbly voice, “Does it ev-er go back to normal?” – ‘it’ beingour lives. She gaveme these short-term goals for the future:

) At three months they startsleeping longer, and you startthinking clearer.

) At five months they start get-ting interested in solids, and theday is more manageable.

) At eight months they startcrawling and become more mo-bile.

) At a year they’re practicallytoddlers and you have a sem-blance of your life back.It wasn’t as if my life became in-

stantly easier with each mile-stone, it was more like a gradualimprovement where one day I re-alised, “I almost feel like my oldself again.” That was a happy dayfor everyone.(Source: Candace van Zyl
