SIGTRAN is based on the IP protocol replacing long-haul, point-to-point SS7 links between
network elements with IP connectivity.
The IP packets ride on the Streaming Control Transport Protocol (SCTP). SCTP is message
oriented. The protocol transports data through a sequence of messages as opposed to an
unbroken stream of bytes as in TCP (Transmission Control Protocol).

Message Flow
In general, the steps for a message flow in an SS7 over IP network are:

1. A MSC/SSP generates an SS7 MSU (Message Signaling Unit) and sends it to theEAGLE.
2. THE MSU is routed through the EAGLE to the network SIGTRAN interface card (E5-ENET).
3. SIGTRAN places the SS7 MSU in the Data Field, builds the IP packet header andsends the message out through the Ethernet port.
4. SCTP uses the IP Address and port in the header to determine the source anddestination of the packet.
5. The IP packet is received at the destination STP.
6. The receiving SIGTRAN card extracts the SS7 MSU from the Data Field.7. Using the Destination Point Code, the MSU is then routed to the next linkset and
delivered to the intended destination.
To optimize the performance of your network, evaluate the unique requirements andcharacteristics of your SS7 IP network when provisioning the EAGLE. Consider thecharacteristics at the IP layer of your system as well as the performance objectives of yourEAGLE STP.

Characteristics of an IP Network are those factors resident with the IP layer of the network
and external to the EAGLE. These characteristics affect your network performance and
provide information critical in determining how best to provision your EAGLE for optimal
performance. Bandwidth for example, is a limited resource. The amount of available and
required bandwidth is determined by several factors including IP network characteristics.
These characteristics include, but are not limited to:

SIGTRAN should always operate in full duplex. Tekelec does not allow for auto negotiationbetween the STP and the first adjacent router. Should the customer wish to operate in autonegotiation mode, it can be configured at other points in the network beyond the first adjacentrouter.

the ACK is returned. RTT is the time needed for one full transaction.
RTT is calculated at two levels. The IP layer (ping) and the SCTP (Association) layer. TheRTT calculation at the SCTP layer is related to the provisioned association. Typically, theRTT at the SCTP layer is greater than that of the IP layer due to the additional processingneeded to operate on the SCTP data.
A stable RTT is one of the most important characteristics of your network. An unstable RTT,such as a RTT with consistent spikes, will cause bandwidth issues and jitter. SCTP timingparameters are based on RTT values.
Management and control of these IP characteristics are outside the scope of the STP.However, the Tekelec EAGLE provides methods by which to manage the variability of IPnetwork characteristics. For example, Tekelec recommends capping traffic capacity at 40%.

SIGTRAN Adaptation Layers
The SIGTRAN Adaptation Layer maintains SS7 concepts (e.g.
alignment) while using SCTP as a transport mechanism.
Tekelec has implemented two SIGTRAN protocols with IPSG:
M2PA (MTP2 Peer-to-peer Adaptation layer)
Replaces B, C & D links between STPs
M3UA (MTP3 User Adaptation layer)

Streams provide multiple segregated paths in the same association. Streams are defined
separately by direction inbound / outbound. The number of inbound and outbound
streams is defined per association.
Though RFC 4960 allows for multiple streams, a maximum of two inbound and two
outbound is supported by Tekelec. The creation of associations default to 2 inbound and 2
outbound streams.
This four stream architecture optimizes:
Synchronization between data streams
Synchronization from control stream to data streams
Load-sharing implementation based on Signaling Link Selection (SLS) across
streams.

Associations
Associations define the IP addresses and SCTP port numbers
for both the local and remote host.
The core data for an association is the TUPLE.
1. lhost, alhost, lport, rhost, rport
2. Multi-homing is implemented by providing a value for the
alhost parameter.
Multi-homing offers an alternate route/address that can be
used for communication with the remote host.
3. Other important parameters of the association:
Association name, and the Adaptation layer
Each association has a unique name.
All other commands reference the association by the association name.

Example 1: (First row on table above) All links are in service. The total Link Set tps= 1000tps/slk * 4slks= 4000 tps. The link set will trip alarm 0115 if the total tps in the link set exceeds 4000tps/ls *80% = 3200 tps. The slk fare share is 4000 tps/ls div 4 links = 1000 tps. The slkusalm will trip at60% of the fare share (1000tps/slk * 60% = 600 tps.)
Example 2: (Second row on table above): One link is out of service. The lsusealm still trips at 3200tps, but now the slkusealm doesnt trip until 800 tps.
In this way, as two links go out of service, the lsusealm is still 3200 tps, but now the slkUsealmdoesnt trip until 1200 tps.
With three links out, lsusealm is still 3200 tps, but the slkUsealm is way up at 2400 tps.

fails and the association goes down, it cannot come back up on the alternate path.

Command uses (Number of IS-NR links * SLKTPS) in place of the IPTPS setting for
all calculations and alarms.
If the linkset is specified with the peakreset=yes parameter, then the command
recalculates peaks for the specified linkset and resets all the stored peak values to
the current actual usage for each link contained in the linkset before reporting
usage.

Introduction
Pass-through commands are passed through the OAMand sent to individual cards for processing.
Command ConventionThe following is an example of a pass command:

Fixed portion: pass:loc=xxxx:cmd=Variable portion: The value for the cmd parameter can
be any of the pass commands. The value given to the
cmd parameter must be double-quoted.
Pass Command Syntax:
Inside the quoted portion, you dont use colons as separators
