There is now a comprehensive suite of digitalbooks available to schools and these are cheaperthan print editions and will fall in price as morecompanies provide digital editions of their books. Over the past number of years Coláiste anEachréidh has been developing its ICTinfrastructure to provide a platform capable ofdelivering one–to–one provision and we nowhave a functioning online ‘virtual learningenvironment’.Coláiste an Eachréidh is ideally placed toincorporate all 6 of the Key Skills proposed in theJunior Cycle reforms which will see an increasedemphasis on the use of digital technology to workwith others, to manage one’s learning and tocommunicate while at all times being safe andethical in the use of digital technologies.

Advantages of Irish MediumEducationIrish is the language of communication in theschool among pupils, staff and board ofmanagement and a very high standard ofeducation is provided in all subjects. Theimmersion system applies because it is recognisedthat this is the most effective system to acquirethe language. There are many advantagesassociated with bilingual education some of whichis described below.

Advantages associated with bilingualism includethe following:

• Higher self confidence.• Increase in cognitive ability and greater ability

in the second language.• Immersion education promotes bilingualism in

a natural way, as well as developing dualliteracy at the same time.

• This develops and expands the pupils’creativity and communicative sensitivity.

• The child experiences an increase in selfconfidence as a result of bilingualism, whichfosters a deeper understanding of their selfidentity.

• The pupils are immersed by the Irish mediumcollege ethos in Irish culture, on both a formaland informal basis. As a result of this, a deeperunderstanding and respect is fostered for themulticulturalism of today’s society.

• Research evidence published by theDepartment of Education in the North ofIreland has shown that past pupils of Irishmedium schoolshave a very positiveview of theeducational andcultural experiencethey gained atschool.

• It was indicated alsothat they were moreopen to culturaldiversity and thatthey had deepertolerance for thesecultures because ofthe experience ofcultural enrichmentthey had gained.

Éileamh ar Oideachas Lán-Ghaeilge

Is léir go bhfuil éileamh ollmhór ar fud na tíre aroideachas lán-Ghaeilge ag an gcéad agus an daraleibhéal. I staidéar a rinne InstitiúidTeangeolaíochta na hÉireann (2004) fuair siadamach go roghnódh 25% de thuismitheoirí na tíreoideachas lán-Ghaeilge dá bpáistí dá mbeadh anrogha ar fáil dóibh. Tá an t-éileamh seo ann margheall ar a lán fáthanna agus déantar cuid acu aléiriú thíos.

Cuid de na cúiseanna go roghnaíonn tuismitheoiríoideachas lán-Ghaeilge:• Ábaltacht na bpáistí labhairt, léamh agus

scríobh in dhá theanga agus na buntáistí athéann leis sin

• Tá sé fíorthábhachtach dóibh go mbeidhGaeilge ar a dtoil ag a bpáistí

• Aithníonn siad go bhfaigheann an páisteléargas ar leith ar a c(h)ultúr féin agus archultúir eile

• Cothaítear bród na bpáistí ina dteanga, inagcultúr agus iontu féin

• Forbairt i bhféinmhuinín agus i bhféiniúlachtna bpáistí

• Ón méid thuas is léir go bhfaigheann na daltaíoideachas iomlánach a chiallaíonn go bhfuilforbairt á déanamh ar shaoránaigh a chuirfidhgo mór le sochaí na tíre seo

• Cuirtear oideachas acadúil den scoth ar fáil iscoileanna lán-Ghaeilge. Léirítear é seo bliain indiaidh bliana sna torthaí a fhaigheann nadaltaí sna Gaelcholáistí de réir an ráta aistrithego dtí an tríú leibhéal (Sunday Times, Márta2011)

De réir taighde ar an oideachas dátheangach seo aleanas cuid de na torthaí do na daltaí a théann trídan gcóras:• Éiríonn níos fearr leo go hacadúil (Gallagher &

Hanna, 2002)• Éiríonn leo an tríú agus an ceathrú teanga a

fhoghlaim níos éasca (Cenoz & Valencia 1994)• Tuiscint agus oscailteacht do chultúir eile

(Gallagher & Hanna, 2002)• Feabhas ar fheidhmiú cognaíochta ó thaobh

cruthaíochta agus ábaltacht cumarsáide de(Bialystok et al. 2005)

Fás i nGaelscolaíocht / Growthin Irish Medium Education

Indeed evidence is now so strong that ProfessorColin Baker, Pro-vice Chancellor of BangorUniversity, Wales and one of the world’s foremostauthors on bilingualism recently (2011) stated atan Irish-medium conference”...

The benefits of Irish-Medium Education must notbe underestimated by society at large, be thatparents, educators, business and government…

The question is not should there be Irish-MediumEducation but, because of the proven success...

The question now should be...

Is any child not educated bilingually in Irelandbeing disadvantaged?”
