‘COOEE’ Weekly Newsletter
Welcome to week 7
Hello to everyone. It is so great to back from my travels and back into the swing of things as
the term quickly passes by. The highlight of the trip was the Street Parade that led into The
Calgary Stampede Rodeo that is a major event held every year in Canada. It was amazing
and I have lots of ideas to share with Mrs Tapp for future events our school is involved in.
Thank you to Mr Baillie for your work as principal in my absence and to Mrs Walsh who has
joined us for the term as the deputy principal.
This week we welcome the children, staff and parents from ‘The Kindy’ and ‘Curry Kids’ to
our school in readiness for the transition to Prep in 2017. Mr Barker did a wonderful job of
organising and keeping track of everyone in the Tuesday session and can’t wait for
Thursday’s session. Mr Bailey (Physical Education teacher) reported that the 2016 Prep
Class were wonderful role models for our visitors when he had them for their lesson on
Tuesday morning. Well done Preppies…we are very proud of you!!!
The big news for next week will be the FETE on Thursday night. Hoping to see everyone
here. The P&C are always appreciative of any donations of goods or support so please don’t
hesitate to contact the school if you are able to help.
Have a great week,
Christine Norton | Principal

AROUND THE CLASSROOMS SCHOOL NEWS
This week in Prep we have the Preppie Open Days on Tuesday and Thursday. While my Preppies will be out on other activities on Tuesday they will be joining the future Preppies on Thursday to show them how things are done here in Prep. In other activities the Preppies will also be continuing their exploration of Rhyme, The Days of The week and The weather through our key topics. Mr Ed Barker
This week in Rainbow B we are learning about digital and analogue clocks in Maths. The focus is recognising o’clock and half past. In English we are learning all about retell. The focus is on retelling dreamtime stories. In history we are comparing what school was like in the past and what it is like in recent times. We will be ask for some volunteers to answer some questions later in the term. Miss Fleur Hiscock
Over the last few weeks we have been very busy. In English we have been reading narratives and finding the real facts within these texts. Maths has been focussing on measuring the length, area and capacity of different objects. In History we have started looking at the Olympics. Students were able to colour the flag of the host countries. Students have also learnt about the meaning of the Olympic rings and the sports that are at the Olympics. Lots of learning has been happening. Have a great week! Miss Rachel Rozynski
Greetings from Green Class. This last week, the students have been planning and writing their retell for the Lorax. They have also been finishing off their History assessment about the continuities and changes with Cloncurry’s natural and built environment. The students will now begin their unit with measurement and should be very proud with their multiplication understanding from the previous unit. Keep up the fantastic work Green Class. Miss Sharni Hall
It is hard to believe that we are already in week seven of this term! Time is absolutely flying by. Students have completed their historical recounts for English and it’s impressive seeing what that students have done. We also completed an assessment on fractions. Students had to put mixed number fractions and improper fractions on a number line. In Geography and Science we are continuing to look at materials and sustainability. Miss Kelly Rozynski
What a few weeks it has been up in the red classroom! With the Olympics coming to a close, we now wind down our medal tally that has been updated each day to track how different countries are going. The Olympics have opened up a lot of discussion during our math lessons as well. Did you know that Usain Bolt only takes 41
steps to run 100m? With his steps being 2.5 metres long when he is running his fastest! Did you also know that at his fastest he is running 44.8km per hour! That means he is not allowed to run his fastest around the school grounds as the speed limit is only 40km per hour! Thanks to those students as well that have returned items for the school fete next week. I look forward to updating you then. Mr Gene Harvey

LIBRARY NEWS AROUND THE CLASSROOMS
Hello to all our wonderful Cloncurry families Moving into the last phase of our term, we are beginning to plan how we will apply the knowledge and understanding we have gained throughout the term to our assessment tasks. In English students will be writing a letter, from the present, to someone in the future. I greatly look forward to the ways in which our students describe their lives and project their thoughts and feelings. Maths continues to move towards consolidation and sound grounding in all number facts and operations. Well done to that growing group of kidlets taking responsibility and working on their number facts every night. Kind regards, Miss Lizzie (Elizabeth Keim)
Year 7 and 8 have been getting ready for their upcoming Fete stall. This year the Year 7 and 8s have joined forces to bring members of the community the yummiest baked goods to their Baked Goods stall. Eight of the Year 8 girls have begun baking each Monday morning in Period Two to supply the stall with delicious cakes,
muffins and slices. They are doing this as part of their Pastoral Care program at school. The other 12 Year 8 girls have been lucky enough to be selected to participate in the TEAM UP program run by the PCYC on Monday mornings. This program focusses on building leadership skills and working in a team environment. The Year 8 boys have been working with Keith Ainsworth on building the same set of skills but here at school together. Year 7 Crimson A class have been focussing their Pastoral Care on a program called 'Smiling Minds'. The program is being carried out at school and is all about calming the mind through mindful meditation. The students are loving the program and believe it has helped during assessment submission time. "I think that Smiling Minds is pretty cool because it works to relax my mind. It helps to get rid of my stress and anxiety and I feel much calmer after we finish meditating." - Penny Heslin, Year 7 student
Japanese (Yr. 5 – 8) All Japanese classes have completed one assessment task, and will begin work on their second tasks this week. In Yr. 5 & 6 we are looking at ‘Advanced Self Introductions’, and students will be learning how to read a self-introduction in Japanese script. In Yr. 7 students will be writing a letter introducing themselves to a Japanese pen pal. We are currently working on finding a middle school to exchange letters with. Yr. 8 students are exploring Japanese festivals, and will be producing a short newscast in Japanese describing a festival of their choice. All Japanese classes are well on way to achieving their Japanese culture/reward lesson at the end of the term. Keep up the great work! Miss Michelle Handley
Yr. 9/10 Media Studies Media Studies students have been learning various web design principles and techniques this term. Students have created a personal website, and will now be working on designing and producing a professional website for a business.
Yr. 9/10 Science We performed a dissection this week as part of our Body Systems unit. Students cut open sheep hearts an identified the left and right ventricles as well as the valves used to control blood flow through the heart. Overall we were very impressed with the students as they performed the experiment safely and followed instructions regarding cutting techniques. We are now beginning our next unit on Ecology.
Yr. 11/12 ICT ICT students are studying ‘Game Design Evaluation’ this term, and are currently writing a review on a
game of their choice. We definitely have some budding game reviewers in our midst! Students will be finished the drafting process this week, and will then move onto producing a magazine spread or a television segment using their written review.
Yr. 11/12 Science Our trip to Ernest Henry mine was a great success! Students got the see the various processes the ore goes through in the concentrator which is a great advantage. We are writing reports on these processes as well as the environmental management and community relations projects the mine completes as our assessment this term.
