The subject was a 43-year-old female who suffered from clinically significant distress and impairment and sought psychological therapy. Eight individual VR graded exposure sessions were conducted. All self-report measures were reduced following VR exposure and were maintained at one month follow-up. The necessity of a theoretical framework for this new medium for exposure therapy is discussed. © 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. The potential of VR is such that practically all the clinical disciplines will be able to benefit from this man-computer interface (Greenleaf, 1995). Although the future is promising, VR applications to the field of the psychological treatments are scarce. The first application was Schneider's study (1982), in which the effectiveness of a very rudim entary initial tool was tested (special lenses which altered the * Author for correspondence.
