This issue of CityU Today, the second in 2010, continues to update you on advances and trends in research and teaching at the University.
Nanotechnology, a brilliant new player in today’s Revolution of Technology, is opening up huge worlds within the micro-world, bringing about wondrous breakthroughs in medicine, communication, energy and other sectors. Standing at the forefront of the Revolution, CityU well perceives the potentials of nanotechnology. It has set up research centres for nano-based projects, and has started to offer postgraduate courses in nanotechnology to train professionals in this fresh field.
Located where sea routes link East and West, Hong Kong has long been a regional and international hub of shipping and logistics. Now amidst the strong current of globalisation in trade and commerce today, Hong Kong is striving to provide even higher quality service that integrates land, sea, and air operations. To meet the demand, CityU’s School of Law has set up the Hong Kong Centre for Maritime and Transportation Law to conduct research in the field, and to bring up a new breed of professionals in the relevant laws.
As always, CityU is committed to research and professional education for the benefit of Hong Kong and the world beyond.

納米科技是當今科技革命時代的一顆新星,它在微觀世界中開拓出廣闊天地,為醫藥科學、通訊、能源等領域帶來空前的突破。城大立足科技革命前沿,着眼納米科技的遠大前景,不僅創立了相關課題的研究實驗室,而且開設了納米科技研究生課程。城大校園裏,將誕生新一代納米科技專才。

香港民建聯總幹事鍾瑞明先生將獲頒榮譽
社會科學博士學位。鍾先生熱心參與公共
事務,現出任中國人民政治協商會議全國
委員會委員。
廣達電腦公司創辦人暨董事長林百里博士
將獲頒榮譽工商管理學博士學位。在林博
士領導下,廣達電腦自1988年創立以來
迅速發展,十年間成為全球筆記型電腦代
工龍頭。
創新工場董事長兼首席執行官李開復博士
將獲頒榮譽工商管理學博士學位。李博士
素來關心中國青年學生的成長,2009年
9月在北京創立創新工場,幫助中國青年
創業,並為中國打造一批新一代的高科技
公司。
諾貝爾獎得主Jean-Marie Lehn教授將獲
頒榮譽理學博士學位。Lehn教授被譽為
「超分子化學之父」,其創新研究為開發

終審法院首席法官李國能將獲頒榮譽法學
博士學位。李首席法官是1997年香港回
歸後第一任終審法院首席法官。他致力確

Mr Chung Shui-ming will receive an Honorary Doctor of Social Science.
He is currently Director-General of Democratic Alliance for the Betterment
and Progress of Hong Kong. Among his many public roles, Mr Chung
is a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People Political
Consultative Conference.
Dr Barry Lam, Founder and Chairman of Quanta Computer, will receive an
Honorary Doctor of Business Administration. Under his leadership since
1988, Quanta Computer has undergone rapid development, becoming the
world’s largest designer and manufacturer of notebook computers within
10 years.
Innovation Works Chairman and CEO Dr Lee Kai-Fu will receive an
Honorary Doctor of Business Administration. A keen supporter of youth
development in mainland China, Dr Lee founded Innovation Works in
September 2009 in Beijing to provide a platform for gearing up the next
wave of Chinese high-tech companies and nurturing the next-generation
of Chinese entrepreneurs.
Nobel Laureate Professor Jean-Marie Lehn will receive an Honorary
Doctor of Science. Regarded as the father of supramolecular chemistry,
Professor Lehn’s innovative research was the premise for an entire new
field in chemistry and today plays a central role in numerous disciplines.
The Hon Chief Justice Andrew Li Kwok-nang will receive an Honorary
Doctor of Laws. Chief Justice Li is Hong Kong’s first Chief Justice after the
handover in 1997. He has played a pivotal role in ensuring that judicial
independence as guaranteed by the Basic Law is firmly established in
Hong Kong.

Kuang (centre), founder of Ryoden Development,
as the Hu Fa Kuang Sports Centre. The naming
ceremony was held in appreciation of his
significant contributions to sports development
and support of the University.

CityU transgenic fish technology on show at Science Museum科學館展出城大轉基因魚技術
An innovative transgenic fish technology
developed by the research team led by Dr
Cheng Shuk Han (centre), Associate Head of the
Department of Biology and Chemistry of CityU,
that can efficiently detect estrogen disrupters
in the environment, is being exhibited at the
Science News Corner of the Hong Kong Science
Museum from now to 11 July.

Video series encourages community leaders to play a role in university education《成功人士系列》短片鼓勵社會賢達參與教育
CityU has launched its video series, “A Portrait of Success”. The video
is part of the BRIDGE to Success Programme, a fundraising campaign
initiated by CityU that invites prominent individuals to take part
in the University’s education process by sharing their successful
experience with students and supporting diverse learning projects
through donations.

The School of Energy and Environment of CityU has established Hong Kong’s first Biofuel Research
Centre by forming a partnership with the Edinburgh Napier University in UK to undertake research into
sustainable alternatives to fossil-based fuels.

Vice Chairman of CPPCC and Minister of Science and Technology visits CityU全國政協副主席兼科技部部長萬鋼教授訪問城大
Professor Wan Gang (left), Vice Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political
Consultative Conference and Minister of the Ministry of Science and
Technology, led a 13-member delegation to CityU on 28 April, to visit
the University’s two state key laboratories and get an update on CityU’s
teaching and research.
The delegation was warmly received by CityU representatives, including
The Hon Leung Chun-ying (right), Council Chairman. Professor Wan highly
commended the State Key Laboratory of Millimeter Waves for nurturing
talent for the state and encouraged the University to continue its research
endeavours. He also invited the research team to join in the State’s research
planning in the future.

Joy of volunteering助人為快樂之本
A Happy Carnival was organised as part of the City-Youth Empowerment
Project on 18 April. CityU students who had been providing voluntary
services to people in need through the project received certificates and
shared their happiness of helping others.

CityU secures large RGC research grant城大獲研資局大額撥款
CityU has been awarded a grant of more than
HK$8 million from the Research Grants
Council (RGC). The University will use the
funds to conduct a research project that
assesses the reliability of electronic systems
in order to prevent breakdowns that can lead
to inefficiency or, in worst-case scenarios,
fatal disasters.
城大獲研究資助局撥款八百多萬港元,資助
其評定電子系統可靠性的研究計劃。計劃的
目標是預防電子系統故障,以免故障削弱系
統效率,甚至引起致命悲劇。
Expo showcases CityU technologies博覽會展示城大開發的技術
Knowledge Transfer Office featured nine projects developed by CityU researchers at the
International ICT Expo 2010 held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre
from 13-16 April. The Expo was organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council,
which showcased the latest information and communication technologies and products
from around the world.

CityU has been taking some very large strides in a very small arena.
Scientific advancements in the field of
nanotechnology are forging era-defining
breakthroughs in medicine, biology,
communications and energy production.
As one of the world’s leading exponents
of nanotechnology and miniaturisation,
IBM scientist Dr Don Eigler, said during a
nanotechnology lecture at CityU in late January,
“We today have the extraordinary good fortune
to witness and experience a time of change so
rapid and sweeping in scope that it will no doubt
become ranked among the great revolutions
in mankind’s history, alongside the agricultural,
industrial and information revolutions.”

At the forefront of this revolution in Asia is
CityU. Having identified this exciting field as an
area to focus on relatively early, CityU has taken
significant steps to position itself as a regional
research leader in this high-tech industry. The
equipment and infrastructure needed to master
the so-called small universe does not come
cheaply, but CityU has invested tens of millions
of Hong Kong dollars to provide its researchers
with the tools to master their trade.
Nanotechnology is the engineering of functional
systems at the molecular scale. The construction
of devices, as well as manipulation of surfaces at
the atom and molecule level, promises to change
the world in myriad ways. Nanotechnology
has long been held up as the poster-child of
cancer treatment and potential cure of other

departments involved in the field at CityU. The
University has recruited professors, researchers
and laboratory technicians familiar with this
highly specialised equipment from around the
world. As well as EE and AP, CityU scientists are
engaged in nanotechnology in the Department
of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering
Management and Department of Biology and
Chemistry. CityU’s Advanced Coatings Applied
Research Laboratory, established in 2001, is also
heavily involved in nanotechnology research and
knowledge transfer in coating development and
surface engineering.
Teaching of nanotechnology is for now the
domain of postgraduate students, although
Professor Pun envisages that this could change
in coming years. “I hope in the near future we can
extend lectures to undergraduate students. Even
General Education courses could be feasible,
when we look not so much at the specifics of
the science, but at the implications, ethics and
possibilities of the field,” he said.
Such a wide-ranging technology requires
cooperation beyond departmental confines.
From the physical need of managing the
expensive and complex equipment, to
developing programmes that best utilise the
University’s expertise, the focus is very much on
a multidisciplinary approach.
“To push the frontier further, we are encouraging
our staff from different departments to work
together. You need people from different
backgrounds to look at the same issues to
ensure you get the best results. Physicists may
provide breakthroughs in one aspect of creating
a nanodevice, while the engineers may bring
other ideas to the table at different stages of the
project,” said Professor Pun.
Professor Paul Chu Kim-ho, from AP, outlined
CityU’s reach in nanotechnology research,
saying it embraced a wide range of applications.
Among them are orthopedic medicine,
cardiovascular devices, plasma technology,
incurable ailments. While these promises may
remain unfulfilled for some years to come, its
ramifications are not limited to devices that
might seek out and destroy malignant cells.
It will also offer better-built, longer-lasting,
cleaner, safer and smarter products for the
home, communications, preventative medicine,
transportation, agriculture and for industry in
general.
In scientific terms, nanotechnology is a young
science. The term itself was only coined in the
1980s. The fact that dealing with structures
100 nanometres or smaller is such a new
phenomenon places CityU at an advantage in
terms of playing a key role in its advancement.
“CityU has been very committed from the very
start to promoting research and teaching in
this specialised field of endeavour,” said Chair
Professor Edwin Pun Yue-bun, Acting Dean
of the College of Science and Engineering.
“Having recognised its potential very early,
we invested heavily a few years ago in major
state-of-the-art nanotechnology equipment. In
the Electronic Engineering (EE) lab, for example,
we have bought a US$1.5 million electron
beam nanolithography system that can draw
and scan fine lines and patterns down to eight
nanometres. With any standard integrated
circuit, this is an essential requirement for
producing nano-scale materials,” he explained.
“We have also bought the focused ion beam
system, a joint submission between EE and
Department of Physics and Materials Science
(AP), which can etch a pattern down to 10
nanometres. So our colleagues are well
positioned to create devices at the nanoscale
of a billionth of a metre,” he added.
Nanotechnology’s wide range of potential
applications is reflected in the broad range of

energy production and batteries, biology and
environmental protection.
In recent months, CityU has taken centre stage
in the nano arena. A series of eminent lectures,
conferences and visits have served to underline
the University’s growing stature in the cutting-
edge field of study.
The five-day IEEE International NanoElectronics
Conference 2010 held at CityU earlier this year
brought together world-renowned academicians
and experts in the field to explore how the
technology can benefit mankind. More than 40
prominent scientists from around the world,
including Professor Sir Harold Kroto, Nobel
Laureate in Chemistry, Professor Bai Chunli,
Executive Vice-President of the Chinese Academy
of Sciences (CAS), Professor Paul Alivisatos, Larry
and Diane Bock Professor of Nanotechnology,
University of California, Berkeley, and Director
of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory,
US, and Professor Charles Lieber, leading
nanoscientist at Harvard University, US, discussed
the extensive research and profound implications
of nanoscience and nanotechnology to the
health, electronics, biomedical and photonics
fields.
In addition, 16 academicians from CAS, Chinese
Academy of Engineering and Academia Sinica
participated in a special one-day symposium
on nanoscience and nanotechnology to foster
further scientific exchange between scientists
from Hong Kong, Greater China and other parts
of the world.
Professor Chu, General Chair of IEEE conference,
said CityU’s regional influence in nanotechnology
was evidenced by the outstanding calibre of
personnel it could attract to such an event.
Speaking at the conference, Professor Bai said,
“Nanoscience and nanotechnology will bring
us revolutionary changes and promise to make
a profound impact on all aspects of our daily
life and social and economic development.
New discoveries could lead to the emergence
of new industries and help power economic
development.”
CityU is playing no small part in this quest.

輸、農業,以及各類工業。
納米科技是一門年輕的科學,「納米科技」一
詞在1980年代才面世。「納米」即十億分之一
米,這門科技所處理的結構只有100個納米,甚
至更小。面對這一微觀世界的新科技,城大可
以盡展所長,擔起發展重任。
城大科學及工程學院署理院長潘裕斌講座教授
(左)說:「城大一開始就致力推動這門科學
的研究和教學。我們很早就看出納米科技大有
前途,幾年前已大量投資,購置最先進的納米
科技重要設備,例如我們的電子工程實驗室買
了一台電子束納米光刻系統,價值150萬美元,
可以繪製和掃描八個納米之微的線條和圖形。
要在任何標準集成電路上生產納米尺度的材
料,這一設備不可或缺。」
潘教授又說:「我們還購置了聚焦離子束系
統。那是電子工程學系和物理及材料科學系聯
合申請購買的,可以蝕刻10納米之微的圖形。
因此,我們的同事已可以研製達十億分之一米
大小的物件。」
納米科技潛在的應用範圍甚廣,因此,城大有
多個學系、部門參與研究。大學更從世界各地
聘請熟悉納米科技設備的教授、研究員、實驗
室技師。除了電子工程學系和物理及材料科學
系,製造工程及工程管理學系和生物及化學系
也從事納米科技研究。此外,城大2001年成立
的先進塗層應用研究實驗室,在塗層研製及物
體表面工程學上,也致力納米科技研究及知識
轉移。
目前,納米科技只供研究生修習,但潘教授認
為這情況日後會改變。「我希望本科生不久後
城大微觀世界的教學科研邁出巨步。
納米科技發展,正在為醫學、生物學、通訊、
能源生產等領域帶來劃時代的突破。Don
Eigler博士是IBM科研人員,以大力倡導納米
科技和微型化技術聞名國際,今年1月底以納
米科技為題,來到城大演講。他指出:「我們
非常幸運,能夠親身見證並體驗這個時代,當
今的種種變化急速而深廣,無疑將形成人類歷
史上一場偉大的革命,足以媲美先前的農業革
命、產業革命和資訊革命。」
在亞洲,城大位於這場革命的最前沿。大學早
已認定納米科技大有可為,採取多項重要措
施,為本校奠定亞太區納米科技研究的領先地
位。為了掌握納米這個微觀宇宙,所需設備和
基礎建設費用不菲,但大學深信「工欲善其
事,必先利其器」,不惜投資數以千萬計港元,
務求研究人員得心應手。
納米科技,就是以分子尺度設計各種應用系統
的工程學,並從原子、分子層面操控物體的表
面。這門高科技可為世界帶來無數變革。科學
家向來認為,納米科技很有希望應用於治療癌
症,也有可能對付其他不治之症。實現這些願
望也許還需若干年,但納米科技的意義並不局
限於探測惡性腫瘤細胞並加以消滅,還可用

也可以上納米科技課,即使是通識課也好。通識課程不重討論科學細
節,而着重探討納米科技涉及的各個方面,例如道德問題,還有這個領
域的發展潛能等,」他說。
納米科技用途甚廣,所以特別講究跨部門合作。無論是具體管理昂貴複
雜的設備,還是制定最能發揮城大所長的研究計劃,都要多個學系參與。
潘教授說:「為求進一步發展,我們鼓勵不同部門的同事攜手合作。
同樣的問題,由不同學科的專家研究,才會得到最好成果。研製納米產
品,物理學家可能在某方面有所突破,工程學家則可能另有發明,相
得益彰。」
物理及材料科學系朱劍豪講座教授概述了城大納米科技研究的範圍,指
出這一科技所涵蓋的用途甚多,包括整形醫學、心血管儀器設計、等離
子體科技、能源生產和電池、生物學、環保等。
最近幾個月,城大在納米科技界備受矚目,舉辦了一系列重要的講座、
會議、訪問等,突出城大在這項頂尖科技領域蒸蒸日上的地位。
今年初,城大舉辦為期五天的「2010年電機及電子工程師學會國際納米
電子學會議」,邀請到世界著名學者及專家共同商議如何應用納米科技
造福人類。40多位頂尖科學家出席會議,包括諾貝爾化學獎得主Harold

白春禮教授在會議上致辭說:「納米科學與技術將為未來社會帶來革命
性改變,對我們的日常生活、社會及經濟發展產生深遠影響。新的科研
發現,可能導致新型工業或經濟領域的誕生。」

Institutional Development
The mysterious blue world occupying three-fourth of the earth’s area is an integral part of the biosphere and also the place where the biggest ecosystem lives in. According to scientists’ estimation, there are more than 10 million species under the sea and some of their lives are under threat due to the deteriorating marine environment.
A keen supporter in marine environmental protection, CityU has obtained
high level results in marine pollution research and its research teams
and facilities are among the best internationally. It has recently obtained
approval from the Ministry of Science and Technology to set up the State
Key Laboratory in Marine Pollution.
According to Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Director of the laboratory,
Vice-President (Student Affairs) and Chair Professor of Biology, the
laboratory will respond to China’s pressing and important needs in
protecting its marine environment and biological resources, as well as
ecological safety, and will help address complex environmental issues
related to toxic chemical pollution, eutrophication, hypoxia, biological
toxins and aquatic pathogenic bacteria.
The laboratory has signed a partnership agreement with the State Key
Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science, Xiamen University, under
which the two will work together and make even greater contributions
to research in issues related to marine environment and sustainable
development in China. The two laboratories have a number of research
interests in common, particularly complementary in the area of
environmental fate and ecological and toxicological effects of pollutants.

The State Key Laboratory in Marine Pollution
is the second state key laboratory established
at CityU, where researchers will work in
collaboration with those from the University of
Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science
and Technology, The Chinese University of
Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University and
Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The first
state key laboratory at CityU is in the field of
millimeter waves set up in 2008.

實驗室主任、城大副校長(學生事務)兼生物
學講座教授林群聲教授表示,該實驗室將因應
國家對海洋環境和生物資源的保護和生態安全
的迫切需求,以中國近海人造有毒化學品污
染、富營養化、水體缺氧、生物毒素、水生病
原菌等環境問題為切入點,開展海洋環境科學
的高水準研究。
實驗室已與廈門大學近海海洋環境科學國家重
點實驗室建立夥伴合作關係,共同為中國的海
洋環境保護和社會經濟可持續發展做出更大貢
獻。兩所實驗室在環境與海洋多個領域具有
共同研究興趣,尤其在污染物的環境行為及
其生態毒理效應方面有很強的互補性。
除了師生交流和資訊與儀器共享,雙方亦在
科研合作上達成協議,現階段重點開展的合
作研究包括:海洋環境新興化學污染物的檢
測和定量;將海洋鯖 魚(上左)發展為生
態毒理學和海洋污染研究的典型海洋模式生
物;利用人工青口(上右)和半透膜滲透裝
置研究技術對中國海岸線上的金屬和痕量有
機物進行現場監測;以及研發環境與生態修
復關鍵技術等,合力推動國家海洋環境科學

As an important logistics and transportation centre in the Asia-Pacific region, Hong Kong enjoys exceptional historical and geographical advantages. According to the Competitive Index on the Global International Shipping Centre published on 8 March, Hong Kong ranked third internationally, coming only after London and Tokyo. How is Hong Kong to reinforce its role as a logistics and transportation centre and increase its competitive edge? In answer to this question, CityU Today interviewed Dr Vernon Nase, Associate Professor of the School of Law (SLW) and Director of the recently established Hong Kong Centre for Maritime and Transportation Law (the Centre), who shared with us his plans for the Centre’s development, and his views on educating a new generation of legal experts in maritime and transportation law to the benefit of both the shipping industry and the legal sector.
How would you describe the demand for professionals equipped with maritime and transportation law in Hong Kong?There is always a demand for well-trained, value-added and competent
lawyers with innovative ideas in Hong Kong. Because of Hong Kong’s
traditional economic structure, the local commercial lawyers are mostly
focused on financial, real estate, securities, insurance, and investment
matters, while maritime and aviation arbitration cases are mostly handled
by lawyers from foreign-owned law firms. We equip local young lawyers
with a professional knowledge in maritime and transportation law and
provide them with these specialties so that they can benefit from other
career opportunities that exist in Hong Kong.
What role is the Centre going to play?In the face of increasing international competition, Hong Kong must
continue to make every effort to improve its economic position. For
instance, Hong Kong’s position as a maritime centre in the Asia-Pacific
region can be strengthened by drawing on its many years’ experience in
the provision of high-end, value-added shipping services.
The Centre will constitute an education and research platform whereby
international scholars in the field can work together and carry out long-
term, in-depth research on maritime and transportation law with reference
to such areas as insurance, law and arbitration.

The Centre’s research work is not to be limited
to maritime law, but will expand to a wider
context of transportation, including maritime,
air, rail and road transportation. In addition to
teaching, research projects will be instrumental
in planning future strategies to develop
value-added legal service in maritime and
transportation for Hong Kong. We hope the
Center can help the government and industry
identify potential issues and formulate related
policies.
Face to Face
How would you compare the development of maritime and transportation law education in the Asian region?There are some specialised universities that
offer courses in either maritime or air and space
law. However, there is no institution in Asia that
combines all elements of transportation law in
one centre as we do at CityU, which includes the
study of maritime, air and space law and the law
related to road and rail transportation. To meet
the economic and social demands of Hong Kong
and the Greater China, we will equip our law
students with a professional knowledge of the
necessary laws, including harbour law, aviation
law and traffic law.
Would you briefly introduce the major courses and programmes of the Centre?The SLW is discussing with well-known experts
in maritime law of several universities in the US,
United Kingdom, South Korea and the mainland
to develop a LLM programme in maritime and
transportation law. It is hoped that we will be
able to offer a one-year LLM programme in
maritime and transportation law within six
months. The students must be LLB holders, and
the course will extend to the context of maritime
arbitration. And some courses will be conducted
by scholars from renowned international
institutes through video-link lessons.
At the same time, the Centre plans to introduce
short-term courses in maritime, aviation and
other transportation law. We encourage our
students to take part in moot court competitions
related to maritime and transportation law. Such
experience will prove beneficial to them when
they go into practice.
Furthermore, the SLW and the College of
Business are making joint efforts on offering
cross-disciplinary courses for students and
industry practitioners. One can see from all this
that the Centre has a very clear blueprint for
development, and we hope we can contribute
significantly to nurturing legal professionals
for Hong Kong’s maritime and transportation
sectors.

你如何評價亞洲區海事及運輸法教育方面的發展?現時,亞洲區有部分專科大學開設海事、航空
或航天法科目,香港也有大學與內地院校合作
開辦此類課程,但暫時未有像城大般開辦集合
各種運輸法於一身的海事及運輸法研究中心,
其中包括航空、航天法以及公路和鐵路相關法
例。我們希望向城大法律學生傳授專門的法律
知識,例如海港、航空或交通法,以配合香港
及大中華地區經濟與社會發展的需要。
可否介紹一下中心的主要課程和科目?在課程設計方面,城大法律學院正與美國、英
國、韓國和內地數所著名大學的海商法專家商
討,籌辦海事法和運輸法碩士課程,計劃六個
月內即可開出一年制的海事航空法學碩士課程,
課程範疇擴大至海事仲裁。修讀的學生須擁有
法律學士學位,部分課程將由國際知名學府的
學者透過視像課堂教授。
與此同時,研究中心正積極研究在短期內開設
海事、航空及其他運輸法範疇的短期課程,並
鼓勵學生參加海事及運輸法方面的模擬法庭比

“It is as important to travel 10,000 miles as to read 10,000 books,” so goes a Chinese saying. University students today not only learn in the classroom, but also enjoy many other exciting learning opportunities such as internship and overseas exchanges, so that their horizons may be broadened.
Learning through debatesFour members of the City University English Debating Team can easily
testify to this claim. They are Fred Ho Hoi-fai and Steven Liu Wai-hung,
Year 4 students of the School of Law, Ken Li Kin-hang, Year 3 student of
the Department of Public and Social Administration, and Jacky Lam Hon-
cheung (right), Year 3 student of the Department of English.
The turn of the year 2009/2010 saw these four students participating in
the 2010 World Universities Debating Championships (WUDC) in Antalya,
an ancient coastal city in Turkey. The world’s largest inter-university
debating competition, the WUDC is held annually, with the World
Universities Debating Council selecting a university to host the event
each year. The 2010 WUDC was hosted by Koç University, Turkey. Divided
into three sections, more than 350 debating teams from universities all
over the world took part in the eight-day competition.
The four students told us that, in preparation for the WUDC, which had
a very demanding schedule, they undertook a series of training, and
entered a regional debating competition in Macau as a warm-up.
And in the course of the WUDC, they saw the
strengths of students from other regions,
including the excellent organisation of their
arguments. “I found that, with regard to collecting
and using information, we could learn from the
foreign teams,” Fred said. “In addition to collecting
information directly relevant to the subject
of the debate, they also searched for other
related information, thus getting a thorough
understanding of the subject. This enabled them
to come up with very creative ideas and highly
original arguments.” He also noted that the
foreign students attached great importance to
the development of independent thinking and
judgment.
“I talked with members of the foreign teams,
and found that they often read for pleasure,” Ken
said. “Their reading spans diverse subjects, so
they acquire a broad range of knowledge. Hong
Kong students, on the other hand, mostly don’t
read much other than what is prescribed in their
curriculum. I hope to develop regular reading
habits together with my teammates. This would
help us not only in debates, but also in our future
career development.”

As for Jacky and Steven, they were greatly
impressed by the foreign students’ eloquence
and self-confidence. They pointed out that
participation in inter-university events overseas
could help students establish a good social
network, broaden their horizons, and understand
other countries’ cultures.
Internship programme provides an enriching experienceUnder the Internship Programme for Exchange
Students of the College of Science and
Engineering, Or Nga-lam and Evan Xu Xuyuan,
Year 3 students of the Department of Electronic
Engineering, interned at the Banff New Media
Institute for about 11 weeks last summer. They
were charged with the task of developing from
scratch an applied game related to the Global
Positioning System.
They said that, though it was the first time they
had tried to design such a programme, the
Institute’s staff gave them a free hand, so that
they were able to concentrate on their research
work free from pressure. They worked hard, and
developed in succession two game programmes
during their stay there. Though still in the test
and trial stage, the programmes won praises
from the Institute’s staff, who had preliminarily
tried out the games.
While at work, Or and Evan sometimes ran
into difficulties, which they had to solve by
themselves since, far away in another country,
they could not seek help from their professors.
They experienced repeated failures, and
once spent three whole days working on a
problem before they could come to its crux,
but eventually they succeeded. From this
they learned the importance of patience and
perseverance.
“We are now more self-disciplined, and better
able to handle problems independently. We have
also learned not to give up easily. The internship
was a valuable experience, and gave us a good
picture of our future working environment,” Evan
said.
Inter-university events and internships
like these can foster in students a spirit of
independence, enrich their university life, give
them an international vision, and increase their
competitiveness. All this will prove vital to their
future career development.

「讀萬卷書,行萬里路。」現今的大學生學習生活多采多姿,不單可從課堂中獲取有用知識,更可透過課堂以外的實習及參與海外交流活動增廣見識,開拓眼界。
辯論中增識廣聞城大英語辯論隊四名成員:法律學院四年級學
生何海輝和廖偉雄、公共及社會行政學系三年
級學生李健恒及英文系三年級學生林瀚翔,便
有過這樣的經歷。
2010年元旦前後,他們參加在土耳其濱海古城
安塔利亞舉行的「2010世界大學辯論冠軍賽」。
這場比賽是最大型的大學校際辯論賽,由世界
大學辯論會每年揀選一家大學舉行,本年度比
賽的東道主是土耳其的Koç大學。八天旅程中,
來自世界各地的350多支大學生隊伍分成三組
進行辯論比賽。
四名隊員表示,參賽前進行了連串訓練,並曾
去澳門參加地區性比賽,藉此提升競賽狀態,
應付世界賽的密集賽程。
對賽過程中,他們見識了不同地區學生在組織
論點等方面的優點。「我發現,外國隊伍搜集
和應用資料的技巧很值得我們學習。他們不會
只搜尋與辯題有直接關係的資料,更會花時間
搜集其他相關資料,因此對辯題內容有更透徹
的了解,也因此會有精闢的見解,提出獨特的
論點,」何海輝說。他還注意到,外國辯論員
十分注重培養獨立思考能力和判斷力。
李健恒分享道:「我從交談中發現,其他國家
的辯論員均有恆常閱讀的習慣,會涉獵不同類
型的書籍,增廣見識。香港學生大多只埋首於
課堂要求閱讀的課本,很少閱讀課外書。我希
望與其他隊員一起建立恆常閱讀的習慣,不單
是為了辯論,對日後事業的發展也有裨益。」
林瀚翔和廖偉雄則對外國學生口若懸河的表達
能力和自信深表佩服,並表示有機會到國外參
加交流活動,有助建立良好人際網絡,擴闊視
野,從中了解其他國家的文化。
實習中歷練成長電子工程學系三年級學生柯雅琳和徐敘遠透過
科學及工程學院的交換生工業培訓計劃,去年
暑假遠赴加拿大的班夫新媒體中心實習大約十
一個星期。他們必須從零開始研發一款與全
球定位系統有關的應用遊戲。
他們表示,雖然首次接觸這項程式設計,中心
的職員仍然放手讓他們充分發揮創意,使他們
在輕鬆的環境下,全情投入研究工作。他們沒
有因此鬆懈,在兩個多月實習期內,先後研究
了兩款遊戲程式。儘管尚在測試階段,中心職
員試玩後,對遊戲的設計評價很好。
研發期間遇到不明白的地方,唯有靠自己努力
找出解決方法,因為當時只有他倆身在彼邦,
不方便向教授「求援」。經過多次失敗,更試
過花整整三天時間才找出問題根源,終於獲得
成功,並明白做事要有耐性及毅力。
「我們學會自律,而且提升了獨立解難的能力,
再也不會輕易氣餒放棄。實習的寶貴經驗還使
我們了解將來的工作環境,」徐敘遠說。
這些海外交流和實習為學生的獨立成長提供良
好機會,既豐富了他們的大學生活,增長了見
識,又培養了他們的國際競爭力,對日後事業
的發展舉足輕重。

「下雨天留客天天留我不留」
上引的句子不但顯示標點符號的重要,也反映出中文語義分析的模棱難解。中文與英、法等國文字不同,沒有顯性語法標誌以助表意,所以一個句子可能有若干種解讀,缺少標點時更是如此,這一特性大大增加了中文語言資源在電腦世界應用的困難。
城大中文、翻譯及語言學系助理教授方稱宇博士(右)是國際標準化
組織語言資源管理分會(ISOTC37)的註冊專家。他表示,目前在
互聯網上搜尋資料,通常依靠鍵入關鍵字檢索;若能為每種文字訂
立一套通用的標註與分析標準,由各語言地區的權威機構頒佈推行,
則可大大提高網上資源的使用效率。
方博士舉例說:「例如我們要檢索城大昨天舉行的某一場會議的資
料,只能鍵入『城大』、『會議』等關鍵詞,加上昨天的日期來查
找,往往要過濾掉數十甚至數百項搜尋結果才找得到答案。如果搜尋
器採用統一、有效的語義標註與分析標準,就可以直接輸入『城大昨
天舉行甚麼會議?』這個問題來查找答案,檢索會更方便。」
中文、翻譯及語言學系在系主任衛真道教授(左)大力支持下,近幾
年來積極推動國際語言資源管理的研究,今年以東道主身份在城大召
開數場語言資源領域的重要會議。在年初舉行的ISOTC37工作小組
會議上,來自內地、日、韓、德、法、英、荷、美、加等地的代表商
討如何制定分析和管理全球語言資源的國際標準,進一步探討了語義
自動處理和自然語言對話等課題,並取得共識。在隨後舉行的國際語
言資源全球共用大會上,來自16個國家和地區的61位專家宣讀了論
文,從學術角度探討全球語言資源的共用機制。中文、翻譯及語言學
系至今已在城大連續舉辦兩屆國際語言資源全球共用大會,部分精選
論文將在SCI索引的國際知名刊物《語言資源與評測》特輯上發表。
學系組織的這一系列學術活動,進一步提高城大在語言資源處理與管
理領域的地位與聲譽。
方博士是中國全國術語與語言內容資源標準化技術委員會的專家成
員,他同與會的中國標準化研究院代表討論了該院與城大合作的可
行性,並商定待國家第12個五年計劃落實後,雙方攜手設定標準化
文件所用語言的通則,以利推行各產業工作的標準化。
訂立語言分析新標準,提升網上資源使用效率
Dr Alex Fang Chengyu (right), a registered expert of the International
Organisation for Standardisation – Language Resources Management (ISO
TC37) and Assistant Professor of CityU’s Department of Chinese, Translation
and Linguistics (CTL), said most current online search engines only allow
searches by keywords. Once there is a universal standard for semantic
annotation and analysis for each language implemented by authorities
worldwide, the internet will be better utilised.
“For example, if we want to search for information about a conference
held at CityU yesterday, we can key in ‘CityU’, ‘conference’ and the date for
a search,” Dr Fang said. “There may be dozens or even a few hundreds of
results and we have to screen through them manually. If search engines
adopted a universal and effective standard for semantic annotation and
analysis, we can simply type ‘What conferences did CityU hold yesterday?’
to search for answers.”
With the full support of Professor Jonathan Webster (left), Head of CTL, the
department has in recent years assumed a key role in promoting research
into international language resource management. CityU has already
hosted several important meetings and conferences in this area in 2010.
At the ISO TC37 working group meeting held in January, representatives
from the mainland, Japan, South Korea, Germany, France, UK, Netherlands,
US and Canada discussed the formation of international standards for the
analysis and management of language resources worldwide, particularly in
the areas of automatic semantic processing and natural language dialogue.
Following the working group meeting was the International Conference
on Global Interoperability for Language Resources, in which 61 experts
from 16 countries and regions from around the world presented papers to
explore an interoperable mechanism for international language resources
from an academic point of view. This was the second time CityU had
hosted the conference. Selected papers will be published in a special issue
of Language Resource and Evaluation, an SCI indexed journal. The above
activities represent global recognition of the role CityU plays in language
resource processing and management.
As an expert member of the National Committee of Terminology and
Language Resource Standardisation, Dr Fang also discussed with the
representative of the China National Institute of Standardisation for
possible collaboration with CityU. The two parties agreed to work together,

In the Know
“When it comes to atoms, language can be used only as in poetry. The poet, too, is not nearly so concerned with describing facts as with creating images.”
So said the 1922 Nobel Laureate in Physics, Niels
Bohr (1885–1962), a Danish physicist who made
significant contributions to the understanding of
the atomic structure and the fundamental theory
of quantum mechanics.
I, too, believe poems have a role to play in science
and likewise science a role in poetry.
On a small scale, I consider myself a scientist.
I see myself a fusion of theoretical engineer,
applied mathematician and academic editor
by profession, for the reason of holding a PhD
degree in applied mathematics, being a chair
professor in engineering, and having fifteen
years experience in academic journal editing. On
an even smaller scale, I have been considered
an amateur poet because I like writing classical
Chinese poems, though unlike my academic
standing, I do not have any degree or any formal
training in Chinese literature. The interaction
of these two aspects of my life resulted in
my literary foray to seek out aspiring minds
and wisdoms through history so as to better
understand and enhance my own quest and
value.

I have always been amazed and appreciative of how poetry and science
can inspire each other. Curiosity, imagination, exploration, critical thinking,
creative writing and metaphor – elegant poems comprise many, if not all, of
these fundamental elements essential to scientific discovery and research.
Reciprocally, science provides so much motivation and inspiration to poetry,
especially modern freestyle poetry. The two, science and poetry, are rooted
in the same human spirit, inspiration and creativity, and share and reflect
the same kinds of conceptual abstraction and natural beauty of the world.
There have been many geniuses, past and present, with great talents
spanning science and poetry.
The enduring masterpiece De Rerum
Natura (On the Nature of the Universe),
written by the Roman poet Titus
Lucretius Carus (99–55 BC), is an
amazing example of curiosity and
imagination that could extend the
bounds of human knowledge and
query what lay beyond the common
senses and received wisdoms. In
this didactic poem, which was later
divided into six books, Lucretius argued
that everything in the universe is
composed of tiny atoms moving about
in an infinite void, rather than being created by deities as was commonly
believed in his time. Lucretius was an influential scientist with the profound
perspective to see that all the visible motions of small particles reveal the
presence of atoms. He somehow inspired Einstein’s quantitative analysis of
Brownian motion and was thus pivotal in encouraging the acceptance of
the modern atomic theory by scientists such as Bohr.
Since the time of Lucretius in ancient Italy, there has been a strong tradition
of exchange between poetry and science, subsequently producing
many “two-in-one” scientist-poets, or poet-scientists. Today, most people
typically pursue one route while being oblivious to the other, believing
a poet is never a scientist and a scientist is never a poet. One might not
realise that reading a well-written new scientific paper that opens up a new
research direction is very much the same as reading an enlightening poem.
In addition to enjoyment, you are always led to wonder and ponder as to
where it will guide you next.
In the eastern world, there were also many great scholars in the ancient
times. Omar Khayyám (AD 1048–1131) is perhaps one of the best-known.
He was a Persian polymath,
mathematician, philosopher,
astronomer, and physicist.
But above all, Khayyám was
distinguished as a great poet. He
left a collection of famous verses,
Rubáiyát, of which reportedly
one can find around 500 different
translated versions in the New
York Public Library alone. He was
also a mathematician famous for
his influential monograph Risālafi’
l-barāhīn ’alā masā il al-jabr wa’l-
muqābala (Treatise on Demonstration of Problems of Algebra), published
in 1070 when he was 22 years old and eventually translated to Europe. It
laid down the principles of modern algebra. As an astronomer, Khayyám
calculated the length of the solar year to be 365.24219858156 days, which
was more accurate than the Gregorian calendar formulated 500 years later
during the reign of Pope Gregory XIII (1502–1585).

In China, we have many famous scientists and poets throughout some
5,000 years of history, from as far back as the first collection of Chinese
poems, Book of Songs around 1046–771 BC. More notably, Confucius
(551–479 BC) said: “If you don’t study poetry, you won’t have words to
present”. Ancient Chinese education emphasised the integration of
science and literature. During the Western-Han dynasty (206 BC–AD 25),
all schools required students be able to master Six Arts, namely etiquette,
music, archery, equestrian, literature and arithmetic. As a result, there
appeared many poet-scientists who contributed significantly to the
civilisation in China and beyond. To name just one in the ancient times,
Zhang Heng (139–78 BC) was an all-rounded scientist responsible for
great achievements in astronomy, seismology, mechanics, mathematics, as
well as literature and poetry. He invented the world’s first celestial globe,
seismoscope, multi-level engraved-leakage timer, and other scientific
instruments. He improved the circle’s circumference-diameter ratio to be
the square root of 10, fairly close to the more accurate result of 355/113
obtained by another Chinese poet-scientist Zu Chongzhi (AD 429-500),
500 years later. Moreover, he left behind a valuable collection of classical
paintings, essays and poems. Indeed, examples like Zhang Heng are many.
Historical exceptions notwithstanding, why do we still delineate so strongly
between science and poetry today? Well, I believe they are mutually
beneficial. To me, life is more enjoyable practicing both and would be quite
boring if I had only one in which to indulge.

「描述原子理論需要用詩一般的語言;詩人的想像通常比寫實更為豐富。」
這句話引自1922年諾貝爾物理獎得主、丹麥物理學家尼爾斯• 玻爾
(1885–1962)。眾所周知,玻爾為人類對原子結構的認知和在量子力
學方面做出過奠基性的貢獻。
我也相信,詩在科學中扮演着重要的角色,而科學對詩的影響更是功不
可沒。
雖然絕對沒有把自己和科學家及詩人放在一起談論的意思,但是用一個
恰當的尺度來衡量,耳順之年的我畢竟找到一個「理論工程、應用數學
及學術編輯」三位一體的職業歸宿。原因十分簡單:曾經獲得應用數學
博士學位,目前是工程學院講座教授,並且當了十五年學術編輯。在一
個更低的層次,我經常被別人稱為是一個業餘詩客,無非是因為我喜歡
寫一些古體詩詞。其實我不但沒有文學學位而且連正規文學訓練都不曾
有過。不管如何,這個背景也許就成了我試圖提升自己對文學中深邃智
慧和光輝思想的理解和認知的動力,也為我在這裏奢談「科學與詩」提
供了原因和根據。
我向來都為科學與詩竟然可以相互啟發靈感而驚嘆不已。好奇心、想像
力、超越性思維、創造性寫作,甚至遐想及暗喻,這些寫詩的基本功夫
幾乎全部都是科學研究與發現所必不可少的。反過來,科學為詩、特別
是現代自由體詩歌提供了源源不絕的動力與素材。事實上,科學和詩都
源於相同的人類精神、靈感和創造力,追求並享受同一世界的美好抽象
與優雅本質。
放下當今的著名人物不說,歷史上就曾經有過許許多多二位一體的天才。
古羅馬詩人提圖斯• 盧克萊修• 卡魯斯( 公元前99–55)的一首世代流
傳、享譽天下的詩篇「大自然中的宇宙」為後人提供了一個光輝典範:
詩人充滿好奇的內心世界中,蘊含着超越當時人類知識範疇和邊界的科
學認知和哲理。那首長詩後來分成六冊,其中盧克萊修闡述了原子存在
與物質運動的形式,以及宇宙的時間與空間的兩個側面,有別於當時人
們信奉的造物主創世說。他的原子論觀點很可能啟發了愛恩斯坦對布
朗運動的非凡定性分析,以及像波爾那樣的科學家對現代原子理論的接
納、詮釋和發展。
繼盧克萊修之後,詩與科學的相互結合和滲透形成古代意大利非常強烈
的文化色彩和傳統,並為許多睿智過人的學者大師所繼承,其中不乏完
美無瑕的二位一體詩人科學家,或者科學家詩人。今天,一般人只知道
也只樂於追求其中一個目標:不是鑽研科學就是創作詩歌。其實人們時
常都已經體會到,閱讀一篇讓人在一個嶄新研究方向上豁然開朗、寫得
文采飛揚的科學論文,和閱讀一篇動人肺腑的詩篇時的感覺和享受是非
常相似的。行文中值得欣賞的很多共同點自然不必細說,您常常還會有
「山重水複疑無路,柳暗花明又一村」的驚喜和收穫。
東方世界在古時候亦不乏智者能人。歐瑪爾• 海亞姆(1048–1131)可能
是最為傑出的一位。這位十一世紀的波斯人,是一位集數學、哲學、天
文、物理於一身的大科學家,更是一位偉大詩人。他那本流芳百世的詩
集《魯拜集》,據說單在紐約圖書館就有不同文字的五百多種譯本。他
也是當時的著名數學家,以一部影響深遠的代數問題解釋專著Risālafi’l-
barāhīn’alā masā il al-jabr wa’l-muqābala(Treatise on Demonstration of

這種通才式的教育後來也確實產生過不少全面發展的文豪、詩人、哲學
家、科學家,其中典型的一位詩人科學家是張衡(公元前139–78)。
他才華橫溢,天文地理、琴棋書畫無所不通。他創造了「渾天儀」、
「地動儀」、「多級刻漏計時器」以及多種轉動和傳動機械裝置;他把
圓周率的計算細化到10的平方根,與五百多年後另一位詩人科學家祖沖
之(公元429–500)得出的更為精確的結果355/113非常接近;他還為
後人留下了許多寶貴的繪畫、散文和詩賦。在中國歷史上,像張衡這樣
的詩人科學家並不罕見。
世界歷史上的詩人科學家例子多不勝數。但為何今天我們還要把科學和
詩歌相提並論呢?簡而言之,科學和詩學是相互輝映的兩門學問;而對
於我自己來說,實踐兩者比專攻其一會使個人生活更為充實、也更加豐
富多彩。

From the Heart
一切從「心」開始
It was my honour to receive the Teaching Excellence Award 2008-2009, which assures me that my teaching ideals and efforts are heading in the right direction. To me, counselling and guidance is not only a profession, but a congenial lifelong pursuit.
When I was 13 years old, I took part for the first
time in voluntary social service, and fell in love,
as it were, with this kind of work. I decided to
devote myself to the social welfare profession.
Since then, my studies and work have always
been related to counselling and guidance. As
Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied
Social Studies, I now have the task of training
social workers and counsellors, which is more
than what I once could have expected.
My students generally think of me as a devoted
counsellor and enthusiastic teacher, who treats
others with sincerity and cares about society.
Devotion, enthusiasm, sincerity and a caring
nature are all qualities of the heart. In fact,
both in teaching and everyday life, my guiding
principle is to “hearken to the heart”. I am happy
that I am employed as a teacher and counsellor,
for I am now in a position to train one batch after
another of social workers and counsellors who

我十分榮幸能夠成為2008-2009年度 「傑出教學獎」的得獎者。這次獲獎讓我肯定自己的教學理念和方向是正確的。對我來說,輔導學並不單是一份職業,而是陪着我成長的終身良伴。
記得十三歲那年,我首次嘗試到當社會服務義
工的滋味,從此便不能自拔,愛上了這個社
會服務行業,並決意朝着社福界發展。自那以
後,無論讀書、進修和工作,無一不與輔導
扯上關係。現在能成為培訓專業社工和輔導人
員的應用社會科學系助理教授,實在超越了自
己昔日的所想所求。
學生們對我的評價往往是:「醉心」輔導、
「熱心」教學、「真心」待人、「關心」社
群。「一生的果效由『心』發出」,這是我的
教學宗旨和待人處世的座右銘。能夠有幸從事
教學和輔導,訓練出一批又一批前線社工和輔
導人員,使更多有需要人士得到幫助和祝福,
實在是很有意義、令人興奮的事情呢!

I must say my work is as rewarding as it is exciting.
Counselling is an art. It is not an academic
discipline that you can master simply through
reading and writing. Rather it is an invisible but
potent medicine that can cure spiritual wounds
through face-to-face interviews, without the
aid of any physical instruments. The counsellor
himself is the only “tool” for effecting the cures.
Therefore, in teaching counselling, I place special
emphasis on the development of the students’
personality and ethics. I encourage them to
engage in self-examination, and to apply to
themselves the counselling theories they have
learned, to find out and deal with their own
weaknesses, problems and past traumas. In this
way, they will personally experience the effects
of counselling, understand the mental states of
their future clients, and empathise with them.
To be a good teacher, I must always be ready to
equip myself with new knowledge and skills,
and try my best to glorify God through serving
others. I consider it a great blessing to be able to
pursue a career I enjoy, and which does good to
society.

輔導是一門藝術,決非是單從讀寫便可以完全
掌握的學科;輔導是一粒無形的靈藥,沒有任
何實質工具能夠協助及使用,卻是透過面談,
帶來心靈醫治果效的專業。輔導者自己是醫治
心靈創傷的唯一工具,所以,我在教授輔導學
課堂中,特別着重學生個人素質、心志和操守
的建立和培養,透過激勵學生對自我作出深層
探索及反思,並應用輔導的理論來分析自己的
盲點,進而可以面對自己過去的種種創傷和問
題。此舉能使學生親身經歷輔導的效能,並且
能體會到受助者經歷輔導時的心路歷程,從而
在面對受助者時,他們有易地而處、身同感受
的同理心。
要成為成功教授輔導學的老師,我必須時刻儆
醒、裝備及檢視自己,如何才能成為合乎神心
意和榮神益人的器皿。人生在世,能將興趣變
為專業,而這個專業又對社會有益,實在令人
慶幸。它是人生是一份貴重的禮物,也是極大
的恩典。

Among the many CityU alumni, Mr Geng Chunya can be regarded as a very unique individual who has more than one distinctive strengths. After graduating from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Tsinghua University, he furthered his studies at CityU as an exchange student. He received his Masters degree from the Department of Physics and Materials Science in 2004 and became the first mainland student to start his own business in Hong Kong. However, his business has nothing to do with his academic studies.
With the support of Hong Kong Science Park, he started up the EastSpider
Limited, a network company that provides services on developing
membership management systems, computer software, helping clients
to organise activities, launching email promotions, and offering online
payment services and exchanges among different websites. His clients
include business associations, alumni associations, non-government
organisations and social organisations.
Mr Geng has not only set up the above network company, but also founded
the Time Rider Technology Limited, a company specialising in system
development. In addition, he currently serves as the chairman of the Hong
Kong Association of Mainland Graduates and a member of the Commission
on Youth of the Hong Kong SAR Government. Speaking candidly and
quickly, Mr Geng has an acute critical mind and business intelligence to
complete tasks wisely, which makes him stand out from the same age
group. His success and experience are enlightening.
For people who know something about Mr Geng, it may be interesting to
find out how his expertise and experience at CityU contribute to the success

在城大校友之中,耿春亞是個異數,而且出眾之處非止一端。他2002年畢業於清華大學材料科學與工程系,成為交換生來城大深造,2004年在城大物理及材料科學系獲得碩士學位,成為第一個留港創業的內地學生。然而所創之業,卻並非自己的專業。
在香港科學園支持下,耿春亞成立了「東方蜘蛛」網站,專為商會、
校友會、俱樂部等社交組織以及非政府組織等團體服務,為客戶
設計會員管理系統,並提供軟件服務,協助舉辦活動、從事電郵推
廣、網上繳款及聯網交流等。
如今耿春亞不僅經營該網絡公司,還創辦了從事系統硏發的歷翔科
技有限公司,並兼任「在港內地畢業生聯合會」主席、香港特區政
府青年事務委員會委員。他說話又直又快,眼光銳利、辦事精明,
為許多同齡人所不及。他的經歷和體會可給人啟發。
略知耿春亞事跡的人總想知道,他所學的專業、在城大的經歷,對
於今日的事業有何幫助。對此,他解釋道:「物理學是基礎科學,
對任何技術都有幫助;訓練出來的理解、推理等能力,無論在甚麼
工作中都用得到。」
在城大期間,他主動到各大學貼廣告,邀請內地學生合作,組隊參
加各種商業性創新科技比賽,並多次獲獎。他說,撰寫比賽計劃
書,可促使自己深入分析香港社會的需求;參賽期間可在多種場合
發表演講,結識政府官員、產業界領袖,接受傳媒採訪,從而樹立
聲譽,培植人脈。
回顧當年,耿春亞深感城大的環境和定位感、城大研發的工程技術
與產業界的聯繫,對他的發展很有幫助。他說:「系內教授不但悉
心指導及支持我創業,甚至推薦我去跟從電腦科學系教授學習,加
上行政部門的多方協助,令我在創業路途上跨過不少障礙,更能事
半功倍。」
耿春亞的成功史,不但為內地學生樹立一個融入本地社會的榜樣,
也可成為本港學生尤其是城大人自我激勵的借鏡。學以致用、回饋
社會,正是城大的硏究和專業教育所培養的畢業生應做的事業。

During his studies at CityU, he took the initiative to go to all local
universities to invite other mainland students to form groups with him
to take part in competitions of innovative technologies for business
and have won awards from several contests. He indicated that writing
proposals for competitions had helped him better analyse the local
demand. Also, making presentations and speeches in different
competitions provided him the opportunities to meet government
officials and industry leaders as well as being interviewed by the media.
It helped enhance his exposure and build up his personal network.
Recalling his days at CityU, Mr Geng pointed out that his career success
benefits very much from the University’s study environment, its
positioning and engineering technologies as well as strong linkage with
the industry. “CityU’s professors not only offered me advice and support
to my idea in starting up a business, but also recommended me to study
with professors at the Department of Computer Science. Combined
with the kind support of the administrative departments, the University
helped me a lot to overcome many hurdles when I started my business,”
said Mr Geng.
The success of Mr Geng serves not only as an example of how a mainland
student has successfully assimilated into Hong Kong society, but also as
a role model for the local students and CityU members. It has fulfilled
CityU’s focus on professional education and research in nurturing
graduates who can apply their knowledge to their work and make
contributions to society.

“Energy conservation and environmental protection is not something that can be achieved by a minority of people, but is everyone’s responsibility. In this respect, technology can help us meet our needs. While CityU is engaged in advanced technological research, it places special emphasis on transforming the research results into products for everyday use. To conserve energy and protect the environment, we try our best to make the most economical use of every gleam of electric light, and prevent the unnecessary emission of every gram of carbon dioxide,” said Professor Henry Chung Shu-hung, Associate Dean of the College of Science and Engineering, summing up the philosophy underlying his research in the field of environmental protection and energy conservation at CityU.

manageable ones, thus alleviating the problem
of light pollution and light waste.
Energy conservation means environmental protection?“When discussing energy shortage and global
warming, people often talk of wind energy and
solar energy,” said Professor Chung. “However,
energy conservation does not necessarily mean
environmental protection. Therefore, in our
energy conservation research, we are especially
concerned about environmental effects. The
T&K Lighting Management System was built on
four basic principles: first, its adoption should
involve minimum changes to existing lighting
systems; second, it should enable the maximum
reduction in electricity consumption without
affecting the normal working environment;
third, it should help prolong the life span of a
lighting installation, so that fewer replacements
would be needed and electronic waste would be
reduced; fourth, it should be easy to install.”
This system has been patented, and its
effectiveness fully recognised. It is widely used in
commercial buildings, airports, advertising light
boxes, car parks, and public areas in residential
buildings in Hong Kong, Macau, mainland China,
Singapore, the Philippines, and Australia. In
2009, the system won the Hong Kong Awards for
Industries: Machinery and Machine Tools Design
Award.
In one of Hong Kong’s public housing estates
using the system, the average amount of
electricity saved is 120,000 kilowatts per year,
which is equivalent to 90 tonnes of carbon
dioxide emissions. This amount of carbon dioxide
would need 464 trees to be absorbed in a year.
At the cost of HK$1 per kilowatt, it equates to an
annual saving of HK$120,000.
Besides making improvements to the T&K
Lighting Management System, Professor Chung
and his research team have recently come up
with the T8-T5 converter. The T8 fluorescent
tubes used in many homes in Hong Kong are
not as energy-efficient as the latest generation
of T5 fluorescent tubes, which however cannot
be fitted into the existing T8 casings. Now with
a T8-T5 converter fixed to both ends, a T5 tube
can easily go into a T8 casing. Thus existing
casings need not be discarded and there is
no wastage. Another new invention made by
Professor Chung is the alternative style LED
fluorescent tube, which can replace a fluorescent
tube without requiring the replacement of
the transformer, and can save up to 30% of
electricity.
The Green Light MovementIn response to the United Nations’ call for energy
conservation and environmental protection,
CityU launched early this year the Green Light
Movement to encourage youngsters to practise
environmental protection in their everyday life,
and to promote their sense of responsibility
to society and mankind. With the support of
the government, the business sectors and
community groups, the Movement has attracted
the participation of some 40 principals and
students from primary and secondary schools
in Hong Kong. A second phase of activities
is now under preparation, the aim being to
further propagate the concept of environmental
protection and energy conservation in schools
and the community.

能照明管理系統,可減低高達四成照明裝置的
耗電量,使建築物變得更「綠色」。這種智能
控制的中央調光系統可以降低照明系統負荷,
減少能源消耗,同時可在不改變現存電線佈置
和基礎設施前提下,把大部分不可調光系統轉
變為可調光系統,減少光污染和光損耗。
節能=環保?「談到能源短缺和全球暖化等問題時,人們往
往提及風能、太陽能等,但節能並不等於環
保。我們在考慮節能的同時,還十分注重節能
與環保的關係,」鍾教授說。研能環保節能照
明管理系統的技術有四大原則:盡量減低對現
有照明裝置的改動;在不影響正常工作環境
下,盡量減低電力的使用;延長照明設備的壽
命,降低更換頻率,減少電子廢物;以及方便
安裝。」
這項科研成果已獲得專利,技術成效得到確
認,並廣泛應用於香港、澳門、內地、新加
省一點光,減一克碳 ─節能照明管理系統更為環保出力
坡、菲律賓及澳洲等地的商業大廈、機場、廣
告燈箱、停車場、住宅的公共走廊等。這一系
統更在2009年榮獲「香港工商業獎:機器及機
械工具設計獎」。
本港一個公共屋邨使用這個系統後,平均每
年節省電力達120,000度,即相當於90噸二氧
化碳排放量,而吸收90噸碳排量,需要464棵
樹;如以每度電力費用為港幣一元計算,每年
可節省電費港幣12萬元。
鍾教授和他的研究隊伍不斷改進這個系統,並
研發了「T8-T5轉換器」。現時本港一般家庭
較常用T8光管,新一代的T5光管雖然更省電,
由於不能接駁到現有光管盒,民眾未能受惠。
有了「T8-T5轉換器」,用戶只須把轉換器安
裝在T5慳電光管上,就可直接接駁至現有的
T8光管盒,操作簡便,同時不須棄置現有光
管盒,造成浪費。鍾教授的另一項新發明是替
代式LED光管,只須更換光管、毋須更換火牛
(變壓器),即可節省30%電力。
「綠燈運動」推廣環保城大響應聯合國節能及環保的呼籲,於今年年
初推出「綠燈運動」,希望藉此引導年輕人在
日常生活中實踐環保,培養對社會和人類的責
任心。活動獲得政府、工商界、社區組織等支
持,並吸引約40位本港中小學校長及師生參
與。城大現正籌辦第二階段活動,屆時會更深
入學校和社區,推廣環保節能訊息。
