The European Union Cultural Week is back in India, offering a wide range of music and theatre performances, exhibitions, literature shows and special film screenings which are brought together especially for children and youth under the common umbrella of the EU Sanskriti Festival.

After celebrating Children’s Day with film screenings in 10 schools in New Delhi, the exciting and diverse film component of the EU Sanskriti Festival is travelling to three other cities- Guwahati, Kolkata and Chennai – for open screenings.

From November 2011 until January 2012, young film buffs are invited to enjoy a series of fascinating movies from twelve European Union countries – Poland, Sweden, Finland, Bulgaria, Estonia, Spain, France, Italy, Lithuania, Hungary, Netherlands and Austria.

In this brochure, you will find synopses of the films as well as screening schedules in three cities. Be sure to come early since entry is on first come, first served basis.

The Festival is organised and coordinated by the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in New Delhi, by Embassies of the Member States of the European Union, and by the European Union Delegation in India, in collaboration with the National School of Drama, Theatre-in-Education Company, New Delhi. The main partner for the film component is the Federation of Film Societies of India.

In Guwahati, the screenings are being organised by Guwahati Cine Club at Guwahati State Central Library Auditorium on 10-16 December 2011; in Kolkata, by Cine Central at Nandan Theatre on 5-8 January 2012; and in Chennai, by the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation at Edouard Michelin Auditorium, Alliance Francaise Madras on 18-21 January 2012.

The Magic Tree

During a severe storm a tree fell – an ordinary oak tree, one might think. But it was a magic tree. No one knew about it, so the tree was made into hundreds of items and sent to many different shops. That is when the strange things began happening…

One family got a red chair that can walk, fly and make wishes come true for anyone that sits on it. A careless wish results in parents departing to work abroad, leaving the children in the care of an aunt they dislike. The kids run away and take off to see the world. That’s the beginning of a journey full of magic adventures.

Percy, Buffalo Bill & I

This was the summer that Ulf thought would be just another ordinary holiday. He would visit his grandfather and grandmother in the archipalego, go swimming, tease his brother, spend some time with his summer pals and count granddad’s farts during the night. But it wasn’t going to be that simple. Because this year he falls in love with Pia and Percy comes to see him, although Ulf would rather be without him – and he doesn’t want Percy to dance with Pia either. This is a summer full of adventure, love, jealousy and friendship. It is also the summer when granddad becomes the old western hero, Buffalo Bill.
