“Police are in hot pursuit of these so-called ‘heroes’ because there is nothingheroic when you burn and kill people.”These were the words of police mi-

nister Nathi Mthethwa when he visitedchaotic Khutsong in November last ye-ar.The community of Khutsong, howe-

ver, is bitterly unhappy about five ar-rests made in this hot pursuit in De-cember 2013 with regards to the deathof six gang members in November lastyear.After months of suffering at the

hands of brutal gangsters, a communi-ty meeting was called on the morningof 3 November 2013. All the crimescommitted against innocent communi-ty members had been accumulating

and on this morning all men fromKhutsong were urged to attend themeeting.At the meeting, frustrated men who

were tired of seeing their families andneighbours suffer and live in fear, dis-cussed the elimination of gang-mem-bers and themanhunt by approximate-ly 400menwho split into smaller splin-ter groups, began.First on the list was the 61 year-old

witch doctor James Magagula wasdeeply involved and influencing themost feared gang, theCasanovas. Com-munity members torched him and hishouse in Chris Hani Section. After this,another five gangmemberswere killed,two in the same fashion as Magagula.Following these murders, there was

extremely strong police presence inKhutsong, with police officers from

across Gauteng patrolling and perfor-ming stop-and-search operations dai-ly.Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa visi-

ted Khutsong and during his visit hesaid, “As government we shall never to-lerate kangaroo courts that are illegallyconvened and decide the fate of otherpeople’s lives. That is criminality andnothing else. The task of society is toreport those who commit crime to thepolice and in turn police will appre-hend them.”At the same time, community mem-

bers said that they reported gang activi-ties so many times, but still there wasnever the kind of reaction by the policeas was the case with the death of thesesixmen. Five communitymembers we-re arrested by provincial police officersin Khutsong, but the case is being in-

vestigated by a colonel from the Westo-naria police.Protesting outside the Oberholzer

court on 30December, it was very clearthat the Khutsong community are bit-terly unhappy with the arrests of thesefive men, well known members of thecommunity.This, however, did not get anyone

anywhere, as the five men are still be-hind bars, after spending Christmasand New year there. With their first ap-pearance in court, on 30 November,theywere deniedbail and the case post-poned for further investigation.“Why are the police up in arms now

that the gangsters are killed,” askedone angry resident of Khutsong lastyear, “yet we never had the kind of poli-ce presence we do now when innocentpeople, who did nothing to deserve it,were being killed and robbed and gang-raped.”It seems residents still feel this way,

judging by their expressed dissatisfac-tion of the situation.“We will protest again on Monday,” a

communitymember said. “Wewant thecourt to release our people.”A formal bail application hearingwill

take place in the Oberholzer court onMonday, 13 January. The police wouldnot provide names, surnames and agesto the Herald, of the arrested men.

Volgens Howie het mense wat nabydie DBV se hokke in Beesterstraatwoon personeel op 1 Januarie om-streeks 19:15 laat weet dat iemand be-sig is om klappersreg voor die DBVskiet. Hoewel per-soneel binne mi-nute by die hokkeaangekom het,het die skuldigeshulle egter reedsuit die voete ge-maak.

Die oorblyfselsvan drie grootklappers is egtervoor die DBV seperseel gevind.

het juis hul diere na ons hokke gebringomdat hulle veiliger hier as by hul hui-se is wanneer die klappers afgaan,” sêHowie vies.

Volgenshaar is die organisasie opdiétydstip besig om te besluit hoe die saakverder geneem gaan word. Die DBV isook besig om te probeer vasstel aan wie‘n petisie gerig kan word om die skietvan klappers in die dorp heeltemal teverbied. Besonder baie klappers is ookvanjaar oor die feestyd in ander plekke

in die area geskiet. Howie sê dat meerinwoners vanjaar hul troeteldiere nadie DBV se hokke gebring het om sekerte maak dat hulle veilig oor die feestydis. Selfs inwoners van Khutsong hetvanjaar aan dié aksie om hul diere seveiligheid te verseker, meegemaak.

Intussen is buitengewoon baie verlo-re en ongewensde diere ook die afgelo-pe feestyd by die DBV ingehandig.

“Ons het meer as 200 honde ingekryen die hokke was só vol dat ons somstot nege honde in een hok moes inpas,”het Howie aan die Herald vertel.

met hul ma’s by die DBV kom afgee.Baie katte is ook ingehandig. Bykans aldie diere het uit Carletonville gekom.

Geen diere is, volgens die DBV sekennis, die afgelope feestyd deur dieklappers beseer of deur hul eienaarsmishandel nie. Howie het egter genoemdat mense wie se diere gedurende diefeestyd verlore geraak het, nie moetvergeet om by die DBV se hokke vir dievierbeen-vriende te gaan soek nie. Ons staan aan die begin van 2014 en elke inwoner kanself ‘n verskil maak in die sukses wat hul hierdie jaar gaanhê.

Die afgelope week was verlede jaar se matrieks en hulprestasies die koerante vol. In die onderhoude met diemeeste toppresteerders kon ‘n mens sien dat dié uitblin-kers almal besonder hard gewerk het en ook ‘n besonderpositiewe en doelgerigte uitkyk op die lewe het. Indien diéuitkyk vir hulle gewerk het, hoekom kan ander nie ookdaaruit leer nie?

Dit is waar dat almal nie dieselfde talente en omstandig-hede het nie. Waar een persoon se goeie houding en hardewerk vir hulle nege onderskeidings en toelating tot medie-se studies gee, kan ‘n ander se goeie houding en hardewerk dalk net tot ‘n beter verhouding met hul bure en kol-legas lei.

Sommige mense gaan ook tydelik deur sulke moeilikeomstandighede dat dit bykans onmoontlik is om op diehuidige tydstip positief te bly.

Niks stop hulle egter om later, wanneer die problemeverby is, weer te probeer kyk hoe hul ‘n meer positiewerolkanspeel nie. Indienalmal, hetsydit gewone inwoners,sakelui of regeringsamptenare is, deur die komende jaarprobeeromhard tewerkenallesmet ‘npositiewehoudingaan te durf, kan dit net goeie dinge vir ons area beteken.

Hoewel dit naïef is om te dink dat almal skielik hul le-wensuitkyk sal verander, kan positiewe aksies deur net‘n paar mense ook ‘n groot verskil maak.

Mag al ons lesers ‘n wonderlike 2014 hê en saamwerkom ons area ‘n aangenamer plek vir almal te maak.

ideaal wat ‘n gelowige in die nuwe jaar kanen moet najaag, is om op te tree as ‘n gesantvan die Here.

As jy die Vader leer ken het en ‘n kind vanGod geword het, wil Jesus jou uitstuur omin die wêreld ‘n getuie vir Hom te wees.

Jesus het by verskeie geleenthede ver-klaar dat die Vader Hom gestuur het (Joh8:26 en 29). Hy was die groot Gesant vanGod wat gestuur is om Hom by die mensebekend te stel en vir hulle redding moontlikte maak (Joh 1:12 en 18).

‘n Gesant in Bybelse tye het sy sender ver-teenwoordig deur net soos hy op te tree enook die presiese woorde van sy sender te ge-bruik. Hy kon dit doen omdat hy intiem aansy sender verbonde was en sy gesag gehoor-saam het.

Jesus het verklaar dat die Vader groter asHy is (Joh 14:28) en dat Hy en die Vader“een” is (Joh 10:30). Hy het nie sy eie woordegebruik nie, maar dié van die Vader en die

Vader het sy werke deur Hom gedoen (Joh14:10).

Nadat Jesus sy sending voltooi het, het Hyvia die verheerliking aan die kruis en die op-standing teruggekeer na sy Vader toe (Joh17:11) en moes die gelowiges sy werk voortsit(Joh 17:18). Die mantel van Jesus het op diegelowiges geval.

Ons is nie in staat om die werk van die Herealleen te doen nie en gelukkig hoef ons ook nie.Die Heilige Gees help gelowiges om nie hulleeie woorde te gebruik nie, maar die woorde vandie Here.

Die Heilige Gees leer ons deur ons aan diewoorde van Jesus te herinner (Joh 14:26). DieGees gebruik ons om die werke van die Herete doen (Joh 14:12). Ons moet die gesag vandie Here erken en soos gesante van destyds in‘n noue verbintenis met ons Sender lewe.

Daarom het Jesus gesê dat ons in Hom moet

Hoewel alles deur die vakansie lek-ker lui en rustig verloop het, is Wys-neus Maandag, toe ons dorp se strateweer vol begin raak het soos almal nahul werk terugkeer, weer vinnig nadie werklikheid teruggeruk. Wysneuswou oudergewoonte agter die Herald-kantoor in Kaolinstraat indraai toe ‘ngrys vragmotor met ‘n leerling-be-stuurder-plakker agterop die uitgangblokkeer.

2014 promises environmental impro-vement with regards to recycling,should the community of Merafongjump in and think greener than ever be-fore.

The highly successful Merafong Was-te Recycling Project in Fochville, a pro-ject run by Mr Ellington Gili of Khulisa(an organisation which is aimed atyouth empowerment through variousprojects, job creation being one) is flou-rishing and really doing its bit to simul-taneously clean up and empower Mera-fong’s youth.

The project, of which the main locati-on is the official dumping site just be-hind the traffic department in Fochvil-le, deals with waste, which is sorted,sold and recycled, thus creating severaljobs for young men in the area.

The latest project, one which hasbeen implemented in many townsacross South Africa, ensures even mo-re job creation and teaches people tosort waste responsibly.

Waste bags containing only recycla-ble goods such as paper, plastic, tinsand glass are collected from Fochvillehouseholds every Tuesday and Thurs-day.

“We provide every household withone or two Tuffy bags a week,” tells Gili.“We have grown so much that we wereable to purchase a truck, which will goaround to all the houses on a Tuesdayand Thursday, to collect their Tuffybags containing the recyclable goods.”Furthermore, a building where sortingwill take place and equipment storedhas been erected on site.

They are awaiting approval from theDepartment of Health before they canstart to operate.

Gili tells that they tried, originally, tocollect their waste on the same daysthat council collected, but informal pic-kers were becoming a problem as theywere going around and taking the recy-clable goods.

The days have now changed toThursdays and Fridays.

The recyclable waste from around 2000 Fochville households is taken tothe Fochville dumping site, where it issorted into various piles by a group ofyoung men.

Once sorted, the recyclables are soldand a share of the money is then used

to pay these workers.“We really urge the community to

support us,” Gili says. “The Fochvillecommunity has been great, but we arealso going to move on to Khutsong, We-dela and Carletonville.”

Gili said that Khulisa has alreadyengaged with the youth of Wedela whe-re the same processes will start up verysoon.

“We have also invited schools and bu-sinesses in Khutsong to drive this pro-

ject there.” Recyclable waste is alreadybeing collected from certain busines-ses in Carletonville.

Sibanye Gold has agreed to make useof Khulisa in their new high-densityareas and Harmony Gold has agreed togive Khulisa all their white waste paper.“This is a very good cause and keepspeople who would otherwise be jo-bless, employed and sustained.”

A letter of instruction will soon be de-livered to Fochville households, prin-

ted in both English and Afrikaans, togive guidelines with regards to the bagsand required goods and so on.

“Tuffy sponsored us with thousandsof bags,” Gili told.

“This has really enabled us to get theproject up and running smoothly andwe are very grateful.”

Thanks to the kind heart of a munici-pal contractor, three brothers fromKhutsong again have hope for the futu-re.

According to a resident of KhutsongSouth, Mr Tumelo Kekana, a family

friend of the three young brothers, Lin-da (17), Siphiwe (8) and Andile Mthi-munye (13) the three boys have beenstaying alone in their low-cost houseafter their father passed away in 2008.Their mother had died the year before.Since this time, the only person whotried to support them, is their aunt,

Ms Pinky Mthimunye, who also strug-gles financially and often deprives her-self from things she needs in order tohelp the boys.

Despite this, all three boys constant-ly achieve marks of above 60 % at theirrespective schools. Linda, in particu-lar, did very well in Mathematics andPhysics.

He is such a hard worker that whilemost other school children were stillenjoying their holiday, he already con-tacted learners who were in Gr 11 lastyear to get information on how to dowell when school starts again.

Although the three boys stay alone,their small house was spotless whenthe Herald’s journalist visited themunexpectedly on Monday. Linda explai-ned that he keeps the kitchen tidy whi-le it is Andile’s responsibility to cleanthe bedroom. Little Siphiwe is respon-sible for the bathroom.

“It was when I heard that Siphiwe’steacher at Khutsong South PrimarySchool gave him a special award forperseverance at the end of last yearthat I realised I had to help.

“I also realised that the children aregoing to have nothing for Christmas,”Kekana says.

After trying in vain to get help for theboys from two municipal councillors,Kekana called his former employer, MrDavid Benzane of Rigamani Construc-tion.

This business has last year been gi-

ven the municipal contract to buildnew bridge over the road betweenOberholzer and Welverdiend to linkthe new Khutsong South Extensions.

“I called him and he immediatelycancelled several appointments so thathe could come and meet the boys on24 December. After meeting them, heimmediately gave me money to buythem new clothes and healthy food forChristmas,” Kekana says, adding thatBenzane also committed himself topaying for all the boys’ needs at schoolas well as providing them with foodthroughout year.

“Words are not enough to expresshow I feel for what he did in helpingthis family. I so wish that our local bu-sinessmen and councillors will learnthe true meaning of humanity from MrBenzane.

“Our country needs more selfless pe-ople like him to become a better placeto live in. He reminded me of the lateMr Nelson Mandela who said “Povertyis not an accident. Like slavery andApartheid it is man-made and can beremoved by the actions of human be-ings,” says Kekana.

“When I heard that he would be hel-ping us, it felt like someone was offe-ring us a new beginning. We are veryexcited, Linda added.

“We thank Mr Benzane for doingsuch a great thing for us, and I wishGod can also give others more strengthto help other people like us.”

Although learners were still on holiday,the Merafong City Local Municipality al-ready launched its annual ‘Back toSchool’ programme this week.

According to the municipality’s politi-cal spokesman, Mr Slums Magodielo,the programme is always implementedimmediately after the release of the pre-vious year’s matric results to ensurethat local school are ready for the newyear.

The municipality wants to make surethat that the culture of teaching and le-arning begins on the first day to contri-bute to the education of our society atlarge and give support to differentschools in the Merafong area.

As in the past, the programme is beingled by volunteers from different organi-sations in the area, including civil socie-ty institutions such as mines in the area.

The programme kicked off on Wed-nesday when the Executive Mayor, MsMaphefo Mogale-Letsie, visited various

secondary schools in the area to congra-tulate teachers and former matrics forthe hard work that they put in during2013.

She also motivated those who did notdo so well during the past matric exami-nations.

Later the afternoon a mini gala dinnerwas held to congratulate the top achie-vers.

During the next few days, representa-tives of the municipality and other orga-nisations will be hard at work to cleanthe school yards and buildings of vari-ous schools in the Merafong City muni-cipal area.

Buildings and other structures inneed of paint would also be attended to.The group will also ensure that the grassat the schools are cut before the arrivalof learners for the new school year nextweek.

Phase 2AThe Phase 2A Tender Enquiry Document is for the conversion of 100 existing rooms at Emoyeni Residence into112 upgraded units. A unit consists of two bedrooms, a bathroom with a shower, a toilet and wash hand basin,and a communal area with a sink unit. There are also 4 additional storerooms to be upgraded.Phase 2BThe Phase 2B Tender Enquiry Document is for the conversion of 104 existing rooms at Emoyeni Residence into111 upgraded units. A unit consists of two bedrooms, a bathroom with a shower, a toilet and wash hand basin,and a communal area with a sink unit. There are also 19 additional storerooms to be upgraded.Details of Work ExecutionWork needs to commence and be completed in sections, as the existing premises are currently occupied anddecanting of rooms is challenging. It is therefore a specific requirement that each section should be completedin its entirety before commencing on another section in order to make that particular section available foroccupation. The tenderer must have the resources to work on a number of blocks at the same time and completeeach block within the calendar days allowed. The completion of the projects is expected to be by the end ofAugust 2014.Evaluation of ProposalsThe minimum selection criteria to be used in the evaluation of proposals include, but are not limited to,the following:1. Price clarity and management information provisions2. A prerequisite of participating in the tender process is that the successful contactor partake in a joint venture

(JV) arrangement with a local partner. The JV arrangement will form part of the contractual obligation of theproject

3. The contractor must be registered with the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC)4. The contractor must be registered with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), with a grading

of 7GB or higher5. The contractor must be compliant with Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) in line with the Mining Charter

requirements for Procurement and Enterprise Development. “BEE entity” means an entity with a minimum of25% + 1 vote of share capital being directly owned by Historically Disadvantaged South Africans (HDSA), asmeasured in accordance with the flow through principle

however bought and overhauled theCiao Bella, which is now known as theInvestec Ciao Bella. Several of the fami-ly members have also excelled at vari-ous national and international sailingevents.This year the team is not being ac-

companied by their cousin, BradleyRobinson, who sailed with them in2011 but is this year taking part in therace on another boat, the Amtec WitsAladdin.Preparation for the Cape to Rio,

which is officially known as the SouthAtlantic Yacht Race, already started se-veral months ago and the long drive toget the Ciao Bella to Durban by truckstarted on 12 November. After an un-pleasant experience near Estcourt inKwaZulu-Natal with what the Robin-sons described as the “Simon Cowellof traffic officers” the boat eventuallyreached Durban for some final prepa-rations.The team left Durban harbour on the

night of 21 November from where theysailed to Mossel Bay and from there toCape Town.On Saturday, 4 January, the Ciao

Bella was one of 36 yachts from eightcountries which took off from CapeTown harbour at 14:00. This is the14th time that this prestigious yacht ra-ce is held, with the very first Cape toRioheld in1971.Teams fromSouthAf-rica, Italy, Germany, Australia, France,Croatia, Gibraltar, Angola and the UKare taking part in this year’s event.“The start was slightly different com-
