India World’s Most Polluted Place

1.2 Billion People in India

WHO said, “New Delhi’s air contain several times more fine particulate pollution than Beijing’s.”

400 Million in country without Electricity Access

700 Million People burn Biomass trash fuels in their homes

Biomass/Trash BurningBiomass burning is the combustion of organic

matter.

Mixture of many chemicals including carbon dioxide, water vapour, carbon monoxide, particles, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and thousands of other compounds

Biomass burning also produces carbon monoxide.

Many Indians also burn trash which release especially harmful carcinogens such as dioxins from plastics containing PVC.

“660 million people in India now live in areas where PM2.5 levels exceed the country's national air-quality standards.” - WHO

PM2.5: Airborne particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers (especially Hazardous)

The bars show the number of cities in each country with average annual PM2.5 concentrations in a given range.

Bars in red show cities that exceed national air-quality standards (NAAQS).

The World Health Organization considers an annual average of 10 micrograms per cubic meter to be safe.

India's air-quality standards set the limit at 40 micrograms per cubic meter.

(Greenstone et al, 2015)

How Did This Happen?

Page 11: Capstone Presentation

The problemForeign Occupation

British involvement and rule of India lasted nearly 200 years

Upon their exit, India’s economy and development was left in great disarray

Poverty & Population

Exportation of India’s highly agricultural economy led to very poor conditions

Despite these conditions their population continued to climb

Infrastructure

The new poor standing Government for decades were unable to rebuild much of their cities infrastructure

Economic liberalization created exploitation

● In 2015, India Announced the International Solar Alliance of 120 participating countries that pledge to use sustainable energies

● Solar technology as a main source of power to their countries.

● Pledged 40% of energy from renewable resources by 2030

● Looking for a $100 BillionInvestment for Solar specific energies

Key Non Profit PlayersS E L F

Solar Electric Light Fund build solar grid systems for developing communities and teach them to diversify their energy in cooking, agricultures, water extraction, or lighting

Lighting A Billion LivesAn organization that brings aid to the high rates of acute respiratory infection by providing small community solar generators that charge LED lamps to provide light during the night. They also empower women by creating the lamps as an entrepreneurial opportunity

ImpactImproving The Health of

IndiansPulmonary Helath

Swayam Shikshan Prayog

Effectiveness will be determined in three different arenas:

1. numbers of households connected to solar energy with our stoves

2. Health improvement results shown by bi-monthly pulmonary health inspections of selected households

3. The decline of greenhouse gases produced from data provided to and by the World Health Organization.
