Summary of CAPA Immediate Past President (2019-2020)

d earest CAPA members, supporters and friends:

The year 2019 has gone by fast,

here I am so grateful for your

coming along with me for the

past year: thank you for your

guide, thank you for your

understanding, support and help,

thank you for your patience. Together we had a remarkable

year, together we have achieved a lot. As my term as

President ended, I would like to thank all members of

Board of Directors 2019-2020 (Drs. Bill Li, Feng Li, Xiuli

Liu, Zenggang Pan, Peter Wang, Haodong Xu, Huihong

Xu and Jiehao Zhou) and members of Executive

Committee (Drs. Fan Chen, Lizhen Gui, Zenggang Pan,

Lanjing Zhang, Huihong Xu and Zhongren Zhou). I would

like to express my deep appreciation to all committee

chairs, co-chairs and committee members. Of course, I am

indebted to you, the incredible members of this great

organization-CAPA.

Year 2019 for CAPA has been a remarkable year from

many aspects: year 2019 was a transitional year for we

have adopted a new Bylaws; we have truly enjoyed our

non-for-profit status in the history of CAPA; year 2019 has

witnessed a peaceful election under the new Bylaws.

I started year 2019 with a strong foundation thanks to all

previous presidents especially the immediate past President

Yun Gong and her team of Executive Committee. In April

29, 2019, we were notified by IRS that we were officially

granted a 501c(3) status. This is a truly milestone for our

organization, the significances and the benefits of which

cannot be overstated. The approval of 501c(3) by IRS will

not be possible without the hard-works and visons of

President Yun Gong, and all members of Executive

committee 2018-2019.

We have held a record number of professional meetings in

2019 in the US or abroad either alone or in association

with other societies and/or institutions. We held our 5th

Annual Diagnostic Pathology Course from August 31 to

September 1, 2019 in Hilton Los Angeles, San Gabriel,

California. There are 126 participants including 36

outstanding speakers. We added a session of Pediatric

Pathology for the first time. As a tradition, we held our

CAPA Companion Meeting at CAP19, there were 5

wonderful speakers (Drs. Yun Gong, Bill Li, Xiuli Liu,

Xuchen Zhang and Wenxin Zheng) and there were ~70

participants. We had two meetings within a span of 7 days

in China in October 2019. There were total of 17 CAPA

members who were invited as speakers at the 11th Asian-

Pacific (AP)-International Academy of Pathology (IAP),

which was held in Hefei, China from October 11-14, 2019.

CAPA members were vital forces and played an important

role during this meeting, our members were keynote

speakers (Drs. Chen Liu and Jinsong Liu), general sessions

moderators (Drs. Huan-You Wang and Jim Zhai) , section

chairs (Drs. Hui Pei, Hanlin Wang and Jimmy Yang) and

section speakers (Drs. Cheng Liang, Huamin Wang, and

Haodong Xu). Among three special sessions during AP-

IAP, CAPA hosted one with 9 CAPA speakers (Drs.

Dengfeng Cao, Yun Gong, Pifu Luo, Peng Yan, Kun Ru,

Dongfeng Tan, Huan-You Wang, Jun Wang, and Yun Wu).

We thank Drs. Xiuwu Bian and Jing Zhang, President and

General Secretory of AP-IAP, respectively, for their kind

invitation and incredible hospitability. The 5th CAPA-

Cancer Hospital of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences

(CH-CAMS) Pathology Summit was held in CH-CAMS,

Beijing, on October 19-20, 2019. Nine outstanding CAPA

members were invited to deliver incredible talks on various

topics within the gastrointestinal pathology, these 9

members were Drs. Guoping Cai, Chen Liu, Yun Gong,

Grace Kim, Huamin Wang, Huan-You Wang, Yihong

Wang, Wei Xin, Ximing Yang, and Jiehao Zhou. We thank

Drs. Ximing Yang and Ning Lyn for their efforts and hard-

works in making this joint meeting a memorable scientific

exchange. The last meeting for CAPA in 2019 was CAPA

Companion Meeting at 2019 American Society of

Cytology (ASC) Annual Meeting from November 14-17,

2019 in Salk Lake City, Utah. The outstanding CAPA

speakers for CAPA-ASC were Drs. Fang Fan, Zaibo Li,

Xiaoqi Lin, Peter Wang and David Zhongren Zhou. For

detailed CAPA educational activities, please refer the

educational committee report

Our Online Lecture Series were even more popular and it has become a hallmark of CAPA. CAPA has hosted 30

online lectures in the year 2019. The average attendees are 270 per session. We thank Dr. Rong Fan and his team for

their time and devotion week after week.

Despite increased expenses due to record numbers of

meetings for the year 2019, despite negative impact of COVID19 on the (Cont’d on Page 3)

(Cont’d from Page 2) sponsorships, I think we will end up strong financially due

to our tireless efforts for fundraising activities and

increased member donations. As you all knew, we have

received one-time $10,000.0 donation from Dr. Lizhen Gui

to establish “Lizhen Gui Award for Excellence in

Pathology Training”, we salute to Lizhen, we applaud her

gracious, bold and visionary great deed. We hope more

members will follow suit of Dr. Lizhen Gui so that more

types of awards or endowments can be established. I thank

Finance Committee chair and co-chair Drs. Huihong Xu

and Zaibo Li, respectively.

While total numbers of memberships fluctuates from time

to time, we do see an increase in our memberships. As of

Feb 29, 2020, there are total of 685 members, which

include 303 lifetime members, 159 regular members, and

159 associate members. It is my sincere hope that more

Chinese American pathologists can join in us in the future.

I thank Membership Committee chair and co-chairs Drs.

Zenggang Pan, Xin Han, Di Ai and Xiangdong Xu and all

committee members.

We have expanded and increased our collaborations with

other professional societies in the past year. Besides our

traditional partners such as CAP, CH-CAMS, IAP, and

USCASP, we had a successful joint meeting with ASC

thanks to Dr. Peter Wang. CAPA and Digital Pathology

Association (DPA) have signed a two-year agreement in

December 2019 to form an allied society to our mutual

benefits. I would like to thank Dr. Marilyn Bui, the

immediate past President of DPA, for her outstanding

leadership. It is my hope that we explore potential future

collaboration with Wu Jieping Medical Foundation.

It is my firm belief that CAPA under the leadership of Dr.

Lanjing Zhang and future presidents will flourish. Long

lives the CAPA.

Thank you!

CAPA COVID-19 Committee, Action Plan, and Updates

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome

coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The disease was first identified in December of 2019. As of Mid of April 2020, nearly 2.3 million cases have been reported across 210 countries and territories, resulting in over 150,000 deaths. In US, since the first confirmed case reported in January 2020, COVID-19 has infected more than 700,000 individuals and caused more than 38,000 deaths. As a professional medical organization, CAPA has taken actions to help our members and institutions fighting the viral infection on the frontline. An urgent CAPA BOD meeting was held and approved the establishment of COVID-19 committee and its action plan responding to the pandemics on behalf of CAPA on March 1st followed by a call for donation. The committee is chaired by Dr. Lanjing Zhang. The co-chairs are Drs. Huan-you Wang and Zaibo Li. The committee members includes Drs. Fan Chen, Miao Cui, Yun Gong, Lizhen Gui, Xin Han, Jian Jing, Yuanxin Liang, Peng Lee, Bill Li, Faqian Li, Feng Li, Bing Ren, Daisy Sun, He Wang, Xiaoying Wan, Ling Wang, Haodong Xu, Ruliang Xu, Ximing Yang, Huihui Ye, Liying Zhang, Yaxia Zhang, and Jiehao Zhou. COVID-19 Committee Action Plan 1. Establish a multitask fund to support fighting COVID-19 infection. It may include but not limit to the urgent funds/resources for CAPA members related to COVID-19 infection, and aids to the area(s) with viral outbreak requiring urgent help. The fund will come from CAPA allocation and member donations, and will be subject to the BOD’s approval. The usage of the fund should be transparent and published at CAPA website or other media regularly. 2. Solicit the ideas from CAPA members on how to contribute fighting COVID-19.

3. Invite experts in infectious disease and diagnostics to educate CAPA members of the updates of the viral infection via online lecture platform. 4. Promote collaboration of CAPA pathologists with the pathologists in China or other physicians with experience to study the pathogenesis of COVID-19. 5.Use part of the donations to COVID-19 to fund the research focused on COVID-19. The research committee

will be in charge of the solicitation, review and selection of submitted projects. Subsequently, a CAPA member online town hall meeting was held to discuss how to appropriate utilize the donation to help CAPA community to combat COVID-19 disease. Summary of the CAPA Online Town Hall Meeting on COVID-19 Start time: 2:09PM (EDT) 3/23/2020. End time: 3:55PM (EDT) 3/23/2020 Host: Lanjing Zhang Attendance: 28 CAPA members Discussions: 1. Dr. Zhang presented the preliminary report of the COVID-19 committee

2. The committee surveyed more than 10 vendors and several options to use the received donations

3. The committee recommended to purchase medical N95 masks with assistance from Association of the Chinese American Physicians (ACAP, contact Dr. Ruliang Xu), among other approaches.

4. Many attendees shared their concerns on mask shortages and difficulty in purchasing trustable masks.

5. Dr. Ruliang Xu explained and answered the questions regarding the purchase process and their prior experiences.

6. The majority of the attendees commented on the proposed action plans, and agreed to purchase 5,000 medical N95 masks with ACAP’s assistance.

7. The majority also agreed to purchase additional FDA-cleared level-2 or -3 surgical masks upon available.

8. Attendees entertained how to best dispense/donate the masks. One is to dispense in small batch (100 each) to 50 spots, but the majority agreed to dispense 500 (may be up to 1,000) N95 to each of the selected big-name or mask-deprived hospitals. A survey will be sent to seek nominations of the hospitals or regions with most needs.

9. Some attendees would like to purchase level-2 surgical masks for their local hospitals or regions. Dr. Xu will be contacted by those members.

10. One member wanted to purchase some medical N95 masks for her hospital. This will be discussed off line. Submitted by Lanjing Zhang, Chair, CAPA COVID-19 committee Reviewed by Zaibo Li, Co-Chair, CAPA COVID-19

CAPA COVID-19 Committee, Action Plan, and Updates (Cont’d)

(Cont’d from Page 8) RE: President’s message, April 2020

Dear fellow CAPA members,

COVID-19 has posed unprecedented impacts on our personal and professional lives. Now numerous confirmed

cases have been reported in the U.S. Many of our patients are infected by the virus, and some died of it. CAPA answered

the call and has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Xiangdong Xu and other IT team members promptly launched the “CAPA responds to COVID-19” website

https://www.capa-ht.org/capa-responds-to-covid-19/ With strong support of the BOD, we also established a dedicated, ad

hoc COVID-19 committee, which has tirelessly and collegially worked on the project. It has members with diverse

background, regarding gender, geographic location, years of practice and practice setting. We have curated and identified

reliable 4 suppliers out of the 15 candidates. Those pieces of information and action options were present and discussed at

the online town hall meeting on March 23, 2020. See meeting ppt and summary (click to open).

As reported by CAPA finance committee, we now have raised $54,051 as of 4/14/2020, which were donated

from more than 300 individuals. Please see the details on page 10-11 or at Update on donations (on box, click to open).

We also received a total of about $33,500 in-kind or cash donations from 5 organizations, including Shenzhen Horb

Tech Ltd, Sias University, Champions of Medical Advancement Associates, Chinese Community of Madison CT

and UNMC Alumni Association of Chinese Visiting Scholars and Students.

With the help of Drs Ruliang Xu at Association of Chinese American Physicians, Yuanxin Liang and Miao Cui,

we have purchased and sent 500 to 3000 masks to each of the 19 hospitals in various sizes and locations as of Apr 18,

2020, whose needs of masks are urgent and significant. They included (alphabetically order) Advocate Good Samaritan

Hospital, IL; Chilton Medical Center, NJ; Cooper University Hospital, NJ; Geisinger Medical Center, PA; Hackensack

University Medical Center, NJ; Mass General Hospital, MA; Miami Valley Hospital, OH; Montefiore Medical Center,

NJ; Princeton Medical Center, NJ; Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, NJ; Saint Peter’s University Hospital, NJ;

St. Mary's Hospital Milwaukee, WI; Tufts University Medical Center, MA; UC San Diego Health, CA; UC Irvine, CA;

University of Chicago, IL; University of Nebraska Medical Center (Joint Donation), NE; Washington Regional Medical

Center, AR; Yale University, CT. Masks will be mailed to additional hospitals as soon as a waive-of-liability agreement is

signed. I am very grateful to the team and our members for your trust, understanding and support. Working together we

each can achieve more. Please let me know what CAPA can do for you. Thank you, and stay safe!
