SECTION SEVEN: PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFEHANDLING AND USE
Respiratory Protection (specify type): Determine the needfor (and wear if necessary) respiratory protection whereairborne exposures may exceed regulatory limits (for example, during amine filter changes, maintenance and other operationswhere significant airborne exposure to the amine/hydro-
carbons can occur).Local Exhaust Ventilation: Provide where possible tocapture vapours at source, minimize worker exposure andavoid accumulation of explosive vapours. Otherwise, provideeffective general ventilation. Use explosion-proof motor andnon-sparking fan in areas where explosive vapours may form.Special: No smoking, open lights or other ignition sources.Use non-sparking tools in areas where explosive vapours mayform
Protective Gloves: Use chemical resistant gloves to avoidskin contact (e.g. viton or butyl rubber preferable - neoprenesuitable for light duty work).Eye Protection: Goggles and face shield if splashing ispossible (unless full face piece respirator worn).
Other Protective Clothing/Equipment: Use chemical-resistant apron or fire-retardant clothing as required by clothingpolicy.Work/Hygienic Practices: Keep containers closed when notin use. Wash before eating or drinking. Soiled clothing shouldbe removed and laundered.Steps to be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled:Wear suitable respiratory and personal protection. Test areafor H2S and combustible gas/vapour. Remove all ignitionsources. Keep people away. Recover free liquid. Addabsorbent (sand, earth, sawdust, etc.) to spill area. Minimizebreathing vapours. Ventilate confined spaces. Open windowsand doors. Keep out of sewers and watercourses by dyking or
impounding. Advise authorities if product has entered or mayenter sewers, watercourses, or extensive land areas. Federaland provincial regulations must be followed.
Waste Disposal Method: Recycle as much of the recoverableproduct as possible. Dispose of absorbed materials at anapproved disposal site or facility. Assure conformity withapplicable disposal regulations.
Precautions to be Taken in Handling and Storing: Do not
inhale vapour and avoid contact with skin. Observeprecautions for volatile, flammable vapours from absorbedmaterials. Toxic quantities of gases and vapours may bepresent in storage tanks and vessels which contain or havecontained the material. Persons opening or entering thesecompartments should first determine if H2S is present. Do notattempt to rescue without wearing SCBA.Other Precautions: Wash thoroughly after contact. Avoidignition sources.
SECTION EIGHT: EMERGENCY AND FIRST AIDPROCEDURES
Inhalation: In emergency situations, assess situation.
Ensuring own safety use approved respiratory protection toremove the affected victim immediately from exposure.Administer artificial respiration or CPR as required. Keep atrest. Call for medical attention immediately.
Skin Contact and Absorption: Wash with large amounts ofwater. Remove contaminated clothing. Get medical attention.Eyes: Flush with water for at least 20 minutes, lifting upperand lower eyelids at intervals. Get immediate medicalattention.
Ingestion: DO NOT induce vomiting. If conscious, give 1-2glasses of milk or water to drink. (Note: Never give anythingby mouth to a person who is unconscious or convulsing.)Notes to Physician: High aspiration risk. For large amounts, use careful gastric lavage. Eructation and gastroenteritis maybe a complication. Aspiration may cause chemical pneumonitis
or lipoid pneumonia.
