HILL COUNTRY GALLERIA TO HOST ROLLING SCULPTURE CAR SHOW

On Sunday, October 23rd the Hill Country Galleria will host the 4th Annual Hill Country Rolling Sculpture Car Show benefiting the Bee Cave Public Library. The car show will feature collector cars, antiques, modern classics, exotics, muscle cars, street rods, foreign sports cars, and art cars. Awards will be given by the show’s sponsors according to themes they have selected. The show is from 11am-4pm, rain or shine, and is free to attend and open to the public. Attendees will stroll along the Galleria’s Main Street while viewing each vehicle. Last year a record 140 cars participated in the show, more than $5,300 was raised for the Library, and award trophies were given out in categories such as “Car We’d Like to See in Our Driveway”, “Best Maintained Car”, “Best Sports Car”, and “Editor’s Choice”. “Everyone has a lot of fun with this show.  It draws a wide range of cars and car enthusiasts, our trophies are automotive sculptures, and we make a real difference for the Bee Cave Public Library,” said Dean Mericas, coordinator and founder of the Hill Country Show. Colin’s Hope Kids Triathlon How does a lap swim followed by a bike ride and then a long run sound early on a sweltering Sunday morning in Austin in August? “Fantastic!” was the enthusiastic answer from 280 amazing kids ages 5 to 15 who participated in the 3rd Annual Colin’s Hope Kids Triathlon on August 28, 2011. No challenge was too great for this bunch…not even temperatures soaring up to 112 degrees by midday when the last kids were crossing the finish line. One after another, they raced through the Lake Pointe neighborhood in West Austin, cheered on by family, friends, neighbors, volunteers and even the Lake Travis High School cheerleaders. To these kids on this day, nothing meant more than the medal around their necks that rewarded their own hard work, dedication and belief in themselves. The Triathlon benefitted Colin’s Hope, an Austin-based nonprofit foundation established in 2008 to create and support programs that aid in preventing children from drowning. Colin’s Hope is active throughout the community, city and state in promoting water safety awareness and advocating water safety tips that keep children safer in and around the water. Numerous local sponsors joined forces to make the triathlon an even bigger success in its third year, including Nitro Swim, Moreland Properties, Jack & Adams and Hill Country Indoor, who passed out water bottles to the very hot and tired racers at the finish. In addition, YMCA lifeguards manned the pool throughout the swimming portion of the event, keeping a close eye on the swimmers, not to mention cheering, whistling and even dancing to encourage the kids! All of these sponsors support the mission of Colin’s Hope and its desire to make a significant positive impact on the local community. This year, for the first time, triathlon participants were allowed to seek pledges to support their training and their goal of finishing the race. Almost $5,000 was raised on a purely voluntary basis by this amazing group of kids, all of which was donated to Colin’s Hope to help educate and protect other children just like them! In addition, more than half of the racers were participating in the triathlon for the second or third year, many of them improving on their own personal bests within three different age/distance groups. The 280 spots available were filled in less than 3 days of registration this year, making this race one of the favorites around town! There were plenty of festivities to celebrate these young athletes after the event, including a guest appearance by the Star Flight helicopter, which made quite a stir in more ways than one! Hungry stomachs were filled by Clif Z Bars and HoneyMilk while TriTats with names and numbers were inspected to be sure they’d stayed on as “souvenirs”…and more than once the day was declared to be “the best day ever!” For more information about drowning prevention and water safety, please go to www.colinshope.org.

Dear Friends, Greetings! It’s time again to gather your neighbors and team up with your Law Enforcement Agency to give crime a going-away party. National Night Out (NNO) is an annual event held on the first Tuesday of October. NNO is sponsored by the National Night Out Association of Town Watch. This past year’s NNO campaigns involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, business, neighborhood organizations and local public officials from more than 9,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, more than 29.5 million participated in National Night Out last year. NNO is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts, and to strengthen neighborhood spirit and law enforcement – community partnership. But its primary goal is to send a strong message to criminals to let them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Along with the traditional display of porch lights and front-yard vigils, cities, towns and neighborhoods celebrate NNO with a variety of events and activities such as block parties, cookouts, visits from local law enforcement officers, parades flashlight walks contests and youth programs. NNO has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our fight for safer communities. The benefits that your community will derive from NNO will most certainly extend well beyond the one night. The Travis County Sheriff’s Office has promoted NNO for the past 27 years. Our participation has grown from helping with a handful of neighborhood get-togethers to more than 4,000 participants enjoying block parties, carnivals, parades and an assortment of other activities. Our involvement has grown from a couple of crime prevention officers, to dozens of patrol officers, Sergeants, Lieutenants, Captains, Majors, County Commissioners and the Sheriff. NNO is a great way to get together with your neighbors, find out what’s going on in your community and visit with local law enforcement officers about what you can do to help reduce the opportunities for crimes to occur. Participation can be as simple as a small block party, or as big as a parade or carnival. To get involved, or to find out how to register your event for NNO, call the Travis County Sheriff’s Office at 854-8413. LTHS GOLF TEAM ANNOUNCES ITS ANNUAL FUNDRAISER

THE CAV SCRAMBLE The LTHS Golf Team is a team of champions! The Boys Team won its 2nd State Championship in 2011. The Boys have won 11 straight District Championships and have gone to the State Championship 8 of the past 11 years! The Girls also boast an impressive record with a 2nd place finish at the State Championship in 2011 and they have won 9 straight District and 9 straight Regional Championships! Both teams need your support at their only fundraiser of the year, the Cav Scramble. Your participation in the Cav Scramble is an excellent opportunity to support our dedicated student athlete golfers in their pursuit of another state championship. Funds raised at the Cav Scramble are the only source of revenue to fund the tournament fees, equipment fees, lodging and meals for our student golfers. Continued and consistent participation by our golfers in various golf tournaments competing with other schools and districts prepares them for the competitive level of play at the state championship and at future college events. To make the Cav Scramble a success, we need your participation!

District Begins November Bond Election Community Presentations

Lake Travis Independent School District (LTISD) officials have kicked off a series of community presentations to provide voters with information about the November bond election. In May, a 27-member citizens’ advisory committee comprised of men and women representing each elementary and secondary school attendance zone recommended to the LTISD Board of Trustees that a $158.5 million bond package be brought before District voters. Two weeks later, in a unanimous 7-0 vote, the Board approved an order calling a bond election to be held November 8, 2011. The 2011 bond program components, as recommended by the advisory committee, include the following:

New Elementary School #6 ................$25,000,538New Lake Travis Middle School .........$53,729,520Expansion of Lake Travis HS into Current Lake Travis MS Campus .......$20,624,740Expansion of Hudson Bend MS .........$22,246,711Upgrades for Existing Facilities .........$20,727,262District-wide Improvements ..............$16,126,229

TOTAL BOND PACKAGE ..............$158,455,000

If approved by voters, the estimated tax increase related to the bond would be $0.0924 for a total tax rate of $1.4083 per $100 of assessed property valuation. The 2011-2012 anticipated average market value of a residence in Lake Travis ISD is approximately $380,000. After the District’s 20% Optional Homestead Exemption and the State’s $15,000 Mandated Exemption, passage of the bond election would represent an increase of approximately $281.88 annually—or $23.49 monthly—for the average homeowner. Residents who have received an Over-65 Exemption or ‘freeze’ from the Travis County Appraisal District will incur no tax impact as a result of the approved bond election. District officials have scheduled approximately 40 bond presentations to date, including a community meeting scheduled for 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 5 at the Lake Travis High School Performing Arts Center. To schedule a meeting for your group, or to obtain additional information on the bond program, please visit the LTISD website at www.ltisdschools.org or contact the LTISD Office of Communications at [email protected].

PROTECTING YOURSELF AT HOME,IN YOUR DORM ROOM OR

APARTMENT

• Lock your door, even when you intend to return home shortly or even if you are just going down the hall. It takes a thief ten seconds or less to enter an open room and steal your property.

• Lock or secure doors and windows when you are alone or asleep. • Keep emergency numbers by your phone.• Do not leave messages on your door indicating that you are away and when you

will return. • Do not let strangers enter dormitory or premises. • Do not prop open outer doors. • If someone asks to use your phone for an emergency call, offer to telephone for them

instead of allowing them access. • Do not put your address on your key ring. • Know your neighbors and neighborhood watch groups• Do not leave keys in hiding places. Thieves will find them. Carry your keys or make

sure that anyone who truly needs them has their own copy. • Call 911 to report suspicious persons or activity in or around your neighborhood. • Open a savings or checking account instead of keeping money in your room. • Keep automatic teller machine cards in a safe place; keep your PIN number secret.

When possible, only use ATMs during the day. • Instead of carrying large sums of cash use a charge card. Some charge cards insure

property purchased with those cards against loss, theft or damage. • If you find yourself in immediate danger, call 911; try to stay calm and get away at

the first opportunity.
