C-Cineplex

The Cineplex is only place in Gatl in where everyone can hang out. Ethan and Lena s firstdate take place here, Ethan is treated rudely by most of his classmates for dating Lenaand is given odd stares when he goes to the Cineplex to watch movie with her. Lena doesnot feel like dealing with the gossip so she asks Ethan of they can sit in the back. Ethan

knows that the last three rows of the Cineplex are where everyone goes when they wantto make out. Lena finally figures that out when she sees all the couples in front of hermaking out.

D-Darkness

Lena is a caster, and on her hand is written the number of days she has left until her 16 th birthday. On her 16 th birthday she will be claimed for the darkness and go dark or she will

be claim for the light. For this reason she moved to Gatlin to live with her uncle Macontill she is sixteen. When a caster goes dark they have to be separated from their familysome casters because they no longer have a consciousness. Genevieve Duchannes isLena s great(x6) grandmother. In the civil war flash backs she and Ethan have beenhaving she discovers that her great(x6) grandmother performed a spell to save her love slife. This spell had severe consequences and that turned Genevieve dark and this spellalso caused the next generations after her of women to follow in her footsteps. This madethem unlike other casters, Duchannes women didn t get to decide whether they becomedark or light; the decision was already made for them.

E-Ethan

Ethan Wate is a main character in this novel he is a sixteen year old senior at StonewallJackson High and is best friends with Link. Ethan is mindset on leaving Gatlin as soon ashe graduates from school. In the beginning of the book he starts off saying, There ar eonly two kinds of people in our town. The stupid and the stuck, The ones who are

bound to stay or too dumb to go. Everyone else finds a way out. The first week ofschool he meets Lena, Ethan is absolutely taken by her and almost runs her over. As timegoes on he developes a crush on her and also finds out her secret. After discovering her

secret she and him both start trying to figure out a way to reverse the curse Genevievecreated. Ethan is also Lena s protector.

Every family has their problems a very true clich. Ethan s family and Lena sfamily have their problems one s is a lot bigger than the other s. Ethan s family problemstarted after his mom die, after her Ethan s dad locked himself in his study and only cameout at night. Ethan s dad has not left his house since his mother s funeral, he lives onwheat thin with the exception of important holidays. Lena s family problem is that all thewomen in her family line have no choice as to what they are claimed for. Ridl ey, Lena s

cousin, is one of the casters in Lena s family that turned dark. Ridley and Lena were bestfriends before she was claimed, they did everything together. When she got claimed she

became heartless and cruel she cared for no one but herself, she lost all consciousness.Lena s family problem is dangerous and cannot be solved. Every year before the girl s

birthday they perform the Sanguinis Circle a protection ritual performed by the family.

H-Heart

Ethan feels like he has been in love with Lena since the dreams started. In the firstfew dreams Ethan is falling from somewhere and there is a girl falling beside him calling

his name, and telling him to help her. Ethan reaches out his hand to try and catch her butcan t, when he finally falls there is no ground beneath him just mud, as he is clawing atthe mud he touches her hand and smell lemons and rosemary. One night Ethan s in hisroom reading he hears Lena s voice calling, Ethan remembers that today is a holiday inLena s family, today all of her ancestors gather at her house. Lena keeps calling outEthan s name asking for help, and when he reaches her he breaks the Sanguinis Circle. Inthis circle her family members gather and chant the words Sanguis sanguinis mei, tutelatua est meaning Blood of my blood, protection is thine. Ethan breaks the circle whenhe reaches Lena because he can see that she is in pain. When he breaks the circle andwraps his hand around her she stops feeling pain. Macon comes to the conclusion thatEthan has special powers, but her grandmother realizes that he is her protector and that nomatter how many family members join the circle it won t h elp because Ethan is the onlyone who can protect Lena. She chants these words while he is holding Lena. Cruor

Jackson High

Ethan and Lena both go to Jackson High in Gatlin because it is the only highschool in Gatlin. During the second week of school Lena is harassed by Emily and herfollowers, she gets so angry she makes a window explode. From then on the DAR,Daughters of the American Revolution, tries and gets her expelled from Jackson because

they are afraid of her. On Halloween Emily, her followers, and Savannah all dress uplike witches and draw Lena s birthmark on their faces, trying to irritate her.

I-Ivy

Ivy is a character from the flash backs Lena and Ethan get when they are together withthe locket. Ivy is like Amma except she is not a seer Ivy also protected the secrets of herfriends, casters, like Genevieve and her mother. Ivy is the one who warns Genevieve ofthe consequences of the spell, she tells her that the spell will have serious consequences,especially considering that she was a Natural using dark magic. Ivy was also like amother to Genevieve and her last living loved one before the spell.

Ethan Carter Wate s death turned everything around. If EC had not died then Lena wouldstill have her best friend, Ridely , Lena would not had met Ethan. The EC is Ethan s pastlife. Ordinary guy in ordinary town falls in love with not so ordinary girl, dies proving

himself to girl s parents. Girl goes in denial, girl casts a spell to bring guy back, girl turnsevil and canno t be with boy anyway. She cast the spell for..nothing. Ethan s death is thereason Lena and Ethan met, the reason he can protect her, the reason they are meant to

be.

The locket was found outside of Ravenwood, in Greenbrier. The frist time Lena andEthan saw the flash backs was the day she made the window explode and ran fromschool. They saw Genevieve runs from her house and Ethan could smell lemons androsemary, like in his dreams. When Ethan went to see Marian the local librarian they hadanother flashback, and this time they saw Genevieve performing the spell, the spell thatwould, curse her descendants. When they saw this Lena came to the conclusion that sheand Ethan are not destined to be but it proved they were.

M-Marian

Marian the librarian was Ethan s mother s best friend, Ethan had always wondered whyshe had stayed in Gatlin, even after his mother s death. Marian had the brains to leave,

her and his mom had been research partners and Ethan knew she was smart. Halfwaythrough the book he finds out that the reason she stayed was because she was a librarian,a special librarian need to keep the balance between humans and casters. Marian is thecaster library librarian and the Gatlin librarian, she keeps all caster records.

N-New Girl

Lena is the new girl and in Gatlin if you become the new girl you stay the new girl,unless you re lucky enough to have another new kid come after you. Which you might aswell not hope for because this is Gatlin. Lena is harassed by the cheerleaders and s he isconstantly called the new girl or Ravenwood s niece which isn t that much better.

O-Outsider

Lena is constantly treated as an outsider; ever since she was little she was left out becauseshe didn t wear the right clothes or say the right thing . The only friends she has ever hadwere her cousin, Ethan, and Link, and she doesn t even have her cousin anymore because

she was claimed for the dark. All her life she has been an outsider and the people who befriend her become outsiders.

Savannah Snow is the Queen B of Gatlin, she is also the head cheerleader. That isa clich I dislike strongly. Savannah is a base and Link use her as measure of whether thegirl is hot or not, if they are really hot he says they are Savannah Snow hot. Savannah hasher own followers, and has a mother who is part of the DAR.

Sixteen is a repeated number in my book, especially in Ethan s dreams. Sixteen moons, sixteen years, Sound of thunder in your ears, Sixteen miles before she nears, Sixteen seeks what sixteen fears... Sixteen moons, sixteen years, Sixteen times you dreamed my fears, Sixteen will try to Bind the spheres, Sixteen screams but just one hears... Sixteen

moons, sixteen years, The Claiming Moon, the hour nears, In the pages Darkness clears, Powers Bind what fire sears.. This song is mentioned in verse by verse through the book,and each verse starts with the word sixteen. Ethan hears Lena playing this song the dayhe first meets her, and he realizes she s the one in his dreams.

T-Trust

Trust is important but how can you trust someone who doesn t trust you? And if they dotrust you how do you the person does? Trust comes easily at first, then as time goes onyou stop trusting so easily, why this happen I don t know. In Beautiful Creatures Lena

and Ethan cannot trust anyone because they are lied to for their own protection. Sometimes that s a good reason to keep something from someone and sometimes it justmakes thing worse. In this case it made things worse if Lena and Ethan had been told thetruth some of the things that happened could have been prevented. If the adults in Lena slife had trusted Ethan he could have protected her and kept her safe.

U-Uncle Macon

Uncle Macon is Lena s uncle otherwise known as Old Man Ravenwood. Macon is notlike the usual caster his powers are superior to those of all in his family. Macon does notlike to leave his house during the day, in fact no one has ever seen him leave his house,

because of this they think he s an old creepy hermi t, hence the name Old ManRavenwood. Macon and Amma are acquaintances I put it that way because they arelike friends who don t like each other, but don t necessarily hate each other either.

V-Vain

In vain, hopeless, and useless, were the actions Ethan took, the love he gave, and the timehe spent. At least that was what Lena thought, she believed she was destined to go dark,so she tried to push him away. She did not want to feel the loss her great(x6) grandmotherfelt when she lost her love.

Why is a question that was commonly asked in my book. Lena and Ethan are alwaystrying to find answers to why. Why does she want to kill me? Why aren t we meant to

be? Why do you love me? Why did he die? Why? Everything happens for a reason butwhat is that reason? What is the point of something happening for a reason if you don tknow that reason? What lesson will you learn?

X-X.E.N.O.G.E.N.O.S.

Xenogenous means due to an outside cause, Amma is obseesed with crosswords and sheuses most of the word she sees in the book somehow. Xenogenous is one of these words,Amma has an advanced vocabulary but uses words like; y all, itchin , ect.

Y-Yearn

All her life Lena yearns for acceptance and she also yearns for love. When she wasyounger her father died in a car crash and he mother was claimed for the darkness andshe became the most powerful dark caster. Lena has never had the parental loveexperience. Lena has always been left out because of what she did and what she wore.She has only had two mortal friends in her life, and sometimes she wishes she wasdifferent.

Z-Zones

Lena and Ethan skip into past time zones when they have those flash backs. Though theyare just observers they are teleported to a different time to see what happened and howthe can stop it from happening again. The reason they found the locket was so they wouldgo through what their ancestors did.

Reading the first chapters of the book I was excited, because I had already seen

the movie and everyone says the book is always better than the book.
