My mother’s brother had a piece of propertyin upstate New York. Bought it when it was justa piece of land. He also had a small store but nowife.
The store was Jerry’s Emporiumand he sold everything. Never gotmarried even though he had a longtime girlfriend, Lorraine, who was 30years younger than him and wassomewhat married. Lorraine figuredthat Jerry was the only one aroundthat could get her out of this hamlet. Her husband left after 20 years ofhell. All of a sudden the state neededhis property for a road and offeredhim some big money. Jerry, however, decidednot to sell yet. Along came some developers andthey offered him more money but Jerry decidednot to sell yet. Sweet Lorraine had her mind setto get Jerry to sell and maybe move with him toFlorida or Arizona and enjoy all the moneycoming in.
However, Jerry decided he’d think about it.Lorraine tried getting him out of the town for
weekends to persuade him and making him feelvery wanted. Jerry did feel wanted but wasn’tquite ready to make a decision. A few yearswent by with sweet Lorraine trying every
chance she had to make him see how great theirlife would be. No decision by Jerry.
The state decided to make a super highwaygoing through his propery andoffered even more money. Jerry wentinto negotiations but when it came tothe final offers Jerry somehow cameup with something that would louseup the deal. This made Lorraine evenmore loving and pleasing and howlucky he would be with youngishLorraine and him oldish Jerry withmuch money and great things to do.
Then, just like that, Jerry said thatmaybe he’d sell the property and
take Lorraine down south. A slight problemhowever occurred. At the age of 83, Jerry forgotto wake up one day and was gone. Everyone intown sympathized with Lorraine. The only onewho smiled through this was my mother. In lateryears she told me “Jerry never was going to sellthe property,” she continued, “He knew he hadproperty and a younger woman always aroundhim down South, he would be one old man withnothing to do but sit around waiting to die.”
Jerry came out Ok.Wonder what happened tosweet Lorraine?
Probably turned a little sour.

When enough pressure is applied tosomething it will break apart and crash intolittle pieces. When something breaks itbecomes inoperable and unable to function.
When enough pressure is applied to ahuman being they will collapse and burstinto and then dissolve into tears when theyhave reached their breaking point. Theirlife comes to a stop. They are unable tofunction, move or move forward literallyand figuratively. They psyche feelsextremely weary and completely exhaust-ed. A breakdown is considered a temporaryloss of mental health sometimes describedas a nervous breakdown. When it happensto you it feels like you are disintegrating.
In addition to everything else, youcould have a subtle concern or subcon-scious dread about what will happen to youif you do reach your breaking point espe-cially if it happens in front of others. On
top of the issues involved you might havefeelings of shame and embarrassment.Relax; you may never reach your breakingpoint. Everyone has one but not everyonereaches it.
How can you prevent a break down? This is difficult, because, sometimes, youdo not see it coming. You have been on theedge before and always manage to keepgoing. It is not uncommon to reach whatyou think is your breaking point and stillgo on. Sometimes you think that you areactually doing better when your breakingpoint occurs.
How can you recover from it if it hap-pens? Don’t try to stop it. Go with it.Release all of the emotions that are washingover you. Listen to your thoughts and listento what you are saying out loud. Shut downall of your other systems. Locate the pres-sure and the cause. Review your options forrecovery. You must change something evenif it is only how you will think and feel andact going forward. Make a resolution thatyou will never, ever be in this positionagain. Talk to someone if you can.

In the most recent Travel Trends sur-vey conducted by Travel Leaders, experttravel agents cited Panama as the top up-and-coming vacation destination in Centraland South America, and with good reason. Many people are familiar with the PanamaCanal, the impressive 98 year old manmadewaterway that links two oceans and, initself, is a reason to visit the CentralAmerican country. However, there is muchmore to Panama than the canal. The incred-ibly diverse landscape ranges from quietbeaches ringed with coral reefs to pristinerainforests and mountain peaks that losetheir tops in the clouds.
Panama City, which lies at the Pacificentrance to the Panama Canal, offers avibrant atmosphere, stunning skyscrapers, great dining, and a convenient base fromwhich to see the rest of the country. Thereare really three Panama Cities, all worthexploring: the modern city, Panama Viejoand Casco Viejo.
In the 1500s, development of the orig-inal Panama City was set back severaltimes by fires and earthquakes. The citywas completely destroyed by fire inJanuary 1671 after being attacked bypirates. The ruins, located in the suburbs ofthe modern city, have are now a popularattraction called Panama Viejo.
After the destruction of the originalcity, residents conceived of a walled citythat would protect against future pirateattacks. This is now the historic districtcalled Casco Viejo, which is full of won-derful buildings and monuments.
Panama City is within easy driving dis-tance of the beautiful Soberania NationalPark. The park, which stretches along muchof the length of the Panama Canal, is greatfor hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, bird-and monkey-watching, or simply taking inthe beauty of the rainforest.
You’ll need to venture a bit fartherfrom the city to tour Panama’s spectacularhighlands. From the heights of Volcàn BarùNational Park, it’s possible to see both theAtlantic and Pacific Oceans, as well as thecoffee plantations around the charmingtown of Boquete.
Then, of course, there’s the famouscanal, a true marvel of engineering. TheMiraflores Visitor Center is a 20-minuteride from Panama City. It has a museum ofinteractive exhibits and an outdoor terracewhere you can get a close-up view of tran-siting ships. Another way to experience thecanal is to hop on a day cruise that will takeyou through one or more of the threeimpressive sets of locks. You can also takea cruise from Miami or Los Angeles thatwill sail through the canal as part of alonger itinerary.

I could hardly believe what I sawwhen I compared the FaceLiftDentures to the traditional den-tures. I have a personal experi-ence with traditional dentures.Ten years ago, my mother suf-fered so much with dentures andsearched for the best dentist shecould find to bring back heryouthful look and strong teeth foreating her favorite foods. Shewas never successful and spenta lot of money, going from onedentist to another. Does thissound familiar?
People Who Wear DenturesLook OldOften when a person loses a lotof teeth and gets fitted for den-tures, several things happen: theface typically looks sunken in,teeth hardly show, lips being todisappear, and creases form onthe sides of the mouth as the chingets closer to your nose. Not apretty picture. It doesn’t have tobe this way.Do your dentures Cause YouPain and Embarrassment? So many people have spent a lotof money on dentures and don’twear them. They complain thatthey don’t fit, hurt, are ugly andthat food gets trapped under them.
Some dentures cause the wearerto have a lisp or a click during eat-ing. It is very sad and now there isa way to change all this.Compare Traditional andFacelift DenturesIf you compare the one denturewearer with a before and afterimage in the ad, it is obvious thatthe FaceLift Dentures make andincredible difference visually. Ifyou were to interview this lovelywoman, she would also tell youthat eating now is much easierand does not embarrass her
anymore. So What are FaceLift Den-tures?Now you can look yearsyounger with no facial sur-gery. Your beautiful smilesparkles and you can walkout od Dr. Hoffman’s dentaloffice with your custom-fit-ted dentures within a fewvisits of relaxing appoint-
ment time. With Dr. Hoffman’s FaceLiftDentures technique you areable to quickly determine whereyour teeth would have ideallybeen located when you were inyour twenties or thirties. After Dr.Hoffman listens to your desires,he will create a new refreshedsmile that looks natural andfeels comfortable. This stat-of-the-art technique requires spe-cial advanced training and thesuccess rate is extremely high.

Is your fitness or nutritionplan missing the mark when itcomes to getting the results youwant? If so, it may be time to re-evaluate what you’re doing tomake sure you’re not “miss-fit-ting” out on opportunities tomake the most efficient use ofyour time and sweat equityefforts!
‘‘RRuunnnniinngg OOnn EEmmppttyy’’Misinformation about how much car-
dio you should be doing and restrictivediets could lead to a lot of frustration ratherthan elation about your fitness results. Ifyou feel like you’ve been exercising untilyou’re exhausted and aren’t fueling yourworkouts with the right kinds of foods, oddsare the only gains you’ll see are on thescale.
You can actually start storing body fatif you’re not consuming enough calories –and if you’re doing too much cardio and notany resistance training, there’s no wayyou’ll ever be able to firm up. The formulafor “can’t miss’ fitness success is simple:Incorporate a balance of cardio and weighttraining into your routine; and eat five or sixquality meals and snacks a day to keep yourmetabolism revving and avoid becoming sohungry you eat everything in sight - late atnight!
‘‘FFooooddss TThhaatt FFooooll ‘‘YYaa’’Don’t make the common “miss-fit”
mistake of falling victim to notorious dietsabotagers! Just some examples of foodsoften misinterpreted as being good for youinclude fruit yogurts, granola, certain pro-tein/energy bars, flavored oatmeal, smooth-ies and “skinny” lattes that all have so muchsugar – you might as well just eat candy andice cream!
Beware! Just because you may beshopping at Whole Foods Market – don’t bemisled into thinking all those temptingdishes in the display cases are diet friend-ly…Most have sauces, oils, cheeses andother high-fat and high-caloric ingredientsthat could potentially ruin your “whole”goal to lose weight.
‘‘CCuutt OOuutt CCooookkiiee--CCuutttteerr TTrraaiinneerrss’’If you have a personal trainer or are
thinking about hiring one, be sure you’renot being misled by a stock workout routinegiven to every client. Each individual hasunique physique and nutrition needs thathave to be addressed with a highly person-alized approach. What works for one –won’t necessarily work for another…espe-cially when it comes to designing workoutplans that are appropriate for men vs.women.
‘‘LLeessss CCaann BBee MMoorree’’ Wouldn’t it be great if you could actu-
ally spend less time in the gym and startgetting more compliments about how greatyou look?! Overtraining can often lead tomaking you feel depleted and defeated witheven less muscle tone than you started with.
If you’re starting to see too much mus-cularity -adopt the fitness philosophy “lessis more!” For example, if your obliques arestarting too look too blocky, cut out exercis-es with twisting motions or side bends withweights and your waist will appear narrow-er instead of wider.
MMaakkee NNoo MMiissss--FFiitt MMiissttaakkeess Why miss the chance to fit into your
skinny jeans or be beach body ready? Dosome homework to make sure your work-outs are as efficient as they should be; reli-giously read nutrition labels to avoid sugarshock; and use your mirror reflection forthe ultimate fitness “detection” test. Basedon what you see, it’s no “misconception”that you can implement new strategies toshape and sculpt your ideal body!

A case study from Mount Sinai MedicalCenter in Miami Beach, Florida examinesthe potential relationship between heartattacks and energy drink intake. The studywas recently published in the AmericanHeart Association’s publication, Circulation.(Circulation 2012, 125:1447-1448)
A 24-year old, previously healthy malepresented himself to the Mount SinaiEmergency Room with a 10-hour history ofnausea, palpitations and severe chest paindescribed as constant pressure. His symp-toms begin approximately one to two hoursafter having consumed three vodka andenergy drink cocktails. The subject had noprior history or family history of heart dis-ease and, tests concluded that he had noother forms of recreational or prescriptiondrugs in his system.
Upon admission, his initial electrocar-diogram (ECG) showed normal sinusrhythm. However, upon repeating the test, the subject showed a rapid ST elevation, which signifies a blockage of a coronaryartery most commonly caused by a throm-bus or an embolus. He was taken into thecardiac catheterization laboratory where thediagnosis was made. A large clot was seenin the main coronary of the heart. Thepatient developed congestive heart failureand was taken into surgery where a coro-nary bypass graft surgery was ultimatelyperformed.
The patient recovered well and all fur-ther laboratory tests, including a lipid pro-file and coagulation panel, were within nor-mal limits. The patient was dischargedhome on warfarin, an anticoagulant used toprevent blood clots.
Though the case study cannot concludethat the mixture of alcohol and energydrinks was, indeed, the cause of thispatient’s heart failure, it also cannot be
ruled out as it was the only variable presentthat was outside of his norm.
“Though this case study does not con-clude that consumption of energy drinkscause heart attacks, we cannot ignore thatthis was the only variable that was differentin this young patient’s routine,” said Dr.Esteban Escolar, cardiology at Mount Sinaiand one of the study’s authors. “In fact, there are several other published studiesthat have recorded a possible correlationbetween energy drinks and cardiac issues.Once our study is compiled with the others, they begin to show a trend that cannot beignored and must be investigated further.”
Previous case reports have linked ener-gy drinks with sudden cardiac death, coro-nary vasospasm, reversible postural tachy-cardia syndrome, and serious arrhythmias, including ventricular fibrillation. A recent-ly published article in the American Journalof Medicine demonstrated that 250 mL ofenergy drink can acutely cause endothelialdysfunction and significantly increaseplatelet aggression. Almost all such com-mercially available drinks have the samebasic stimulants – caffeine, glucoronolac-tone, taurine, and vitamins – and it is diffi-cult to know which component besides caf-feine, which has been ruled out, is respon-sible for the effect in platelet aggregationand endothelial function. Although its func-tion is not clear, taurine has been found inhigh concentrations in platelets.
Consuming energy drinks and mixingthem into cocktails has become increasing-ly popular. In 2007, 51% of college stu-dents had consumed at least one energydrink in the prior month and, 54% of thosehad mixed it with alcohol.
This Mount Sinai case study shows thatthe effects of energy drink needs to be scru-tinized because of their increasing con-sumption by the public and their potential-ly lethal effects.

Next week, Stuart Geller will step down asPresident of Citizens Interested in Arts (CIA), hav-ing successfully served two years in the position.
Geller, whose interior design firm, Geller DesignGroup, has won dozens of accolades over the yearsfor Turning Houses into Homes, says, “Because I aman artist, I love what CIA stands for. I’ve also hadmuch experience in the philanthropic world,” headds, “so I knew when I took on the presidency I hadto commit to leaving CIA significantly better than Ifound it, just as I do with my design clients. And Ihave.”
Geller and his CIA team, led by strategist PattySoffer, set big goals and big things happened. Firstwas the wildly successful maiden Sail Away WithCIA Caribbean cruise. Next, CIA Founder GloriaMuroff’s Grantees on Parade filled the house at theAventura Arts and Cultural Center. Then, the 2012Champion of the Arts Luncheon honored the literaryarts for the first time, attracted its largest and mostdiverse audience ever and gave Geller and keynotespeakers Alberto Carvalho and Enid Weismann fromMiami-Dade Public Schools (M-DCPS) the platform
to announce CIA’s biggest step of all, theImagination Initiative.
“This Initiative, the brainchild of Patty Soffer andan alliance between CIA and M-DCPS, is the high-light of my presidency, “he says. “It promotes com-munity partnership and expands our impact on chil-dren. Historically,” he adds, “approximately 75% ofCIA grant dollars go to applicant programs thatdirectly affect school children. Now, the schoolsthemselves can apply for grants. That’s big.”
Geller is a former schoolteacher who used imagi-nation to teach inner city students that anything waspossible. “I feel I’ve come full circle,” he says. “Mypresidency is ending but my position as chieffundraiser is just beginning.” Geller will raise sig-nificant funds for the Imagination Initiative, provid-ing not just money but access to the arts for schoolchildren. “That,” he says, “is how you can change alife. What’s better than that?”
