April Update 2012 Trustees meeting The TME trustees held one of their 4‐times‐a‐year meetings in April where the main topic for discussion was planning for the future. Stephen Clarke will be moving to France early in 2013 and by agreement will continue his role on a part time basis from there. This will mean the recruitment of a UK based Operations Director who will take responsibility for the day to day running of the charity working in close partnership with Bev Pettle. This is in an ideal world and subject to the other main topic of discussion ‐ income streams and cash flows! Recruiting an Operations Director will only be possible once we have established a reliable monthly income. The Trustees agreed that the strategy should blend developing new individual fundraising (the 100 x 1,000 challenge – look at www.tme.org.uk/100‐1000 to see if you can join in) and grant–awarding Trusts. However we often fail the criteria for grants because we are either too large or too small! If you know any trustees of Trusts that might be able to help – do let us know. New Trustee Appointed At that same Trustees meeting Pastor Forbes Madziya was appointed as a Trustee of the charity and Director of the limited company. Originally from Zimbabwe, pastor Forbes now heads up a church in Coventry where he lives with his wife and four children. Pastor Forbes has previously produced a translation of our HIV lesson into the Shona language and his daughter, Sarel, volunteered in our office last year. We are already planning to increase our resources for Zimbabwe as a result of Pastor Forbes’s connections and input. Pastor Forbes with two of his children Jo‐Jeremy and Shekinah Report on Khmer discs sent to an orphanage in Cambodia “Bev, they were amazing!! I showed the Basic Hygiene and Looking After Your Teeth DVDs to a group of 40 children yesterday between the ages of 4 and 18 and they were engaged the entire time, shouting out the answers to the quiz and cheering when they got it right. We've been fortunate enough to be able to provide the orphanage with computers and a projector so we could project the DVD onto the wall so all the kids could see it. And there were even speakers so they could all hear it! I know that's not so amazing in England or even back in Singapore, but I just wasn't sure exactly how this would work out at an orphanage in the Cambodian countryside. And it did! It was great! Today we'll be showing the same DVDs to all of the caregivers at the orphanage so they, too, can hopefully incorporate the lessons into their daily routines.”

Supporter uses DVDs in Malawi

One of our long term supporters, Birmingham GP Ali Mabley took a supply of our DVDs in English and Chichewa on a professional visit she made to Malawi recently. Ali took two weeks out from her busy job in Birmingham to volunteer with ‘African Steps’ at a hospital on the Malawian island of Likoma. The TME DVDs were an extra bonus to her main work but Ali found the lessons to be useful and helpful in stimulating discussion and learning. The Hospital has no permanent doctors and the remote island community is very much the sort of group that TME was set up to reach. Ali left one of the local staff members in charge of the portable DVD players which she took with her with the expectation that the discs will continue to be used in outreach now that she is back home. Many thanks to Ali for extending the reach of our Chichewa discs!

Isle of Man Links Develop TME Associate Rosemary Clarke has been busy over the last few months making connections for TME in the Isle of Man. Rosemary runs the One World Centre there, which encourages understanding and respect for the lives and cultures of all peoples. Rosemary works closely with schools and we are exploring collaborating with one or two of these schools to develop scripts for new lessons and train the students to make the language versions of the DVDs from English templates.
