AN–DRO–PO–GON \ N:

A common field grass, is one of nature’s remarkable adaptations to stress and change in the landscape. Wherever the landscape has been disturbed, andropogon is one of the first field grasses to colonize the ground, providing a self-sustaining cover for the gradual return of our native forests.

The economy and elegance with which these grassy meadows heal the wounded landscape aptly describes Andropogon’s goal in ecological planning and design,

“to weave together the landscape of man and nature for the benefit of both.”

Founded more than thirty years ago, Andropogon is committed to the principle of “designing with nature,” creating beautiful and evocative landscapes inspired by the careful observation of natural processes and informed by the best environmental science. The elegance and economy of natural form and process continues to be the benchmark by which we measure the success of our work—from the smallest construction detail to the multi-layered patterns of regional sites.

Andropogon is committed to diversity and inclusiveness in the workplace. Our multi-cultural staff is dedicated to the successful maturing of each project, from initial concept designs to construction review and long-term landscape management. Our body of national and international work includes early examples of innovative green strategies that have withstood the test of time as well as a broad range of landscape, site planning, environmental projects, ecological restoration and innovative stormwater management techniques.

Our clients often tell us that we combine integrated design with a depth of ecological understanding in synergistic ways. With every project we embody our mission... “to weave together the landscapes of man and nature for the benefit of both.”

Andropogon has a long and successful history of collaborating with renowned and distinguished planners, architects, engineers and artists on planning and design projects. In our experience, the most successful collaborations occur when the landscape architect is a full participant in the planning and design process from the very beginning of a project. This allows for a more sustainable and integrated approach to planning and design. Recent collaborators include:

SELECTED PROJECTS |

Page 29: Andropogon Brochure (Chinese Version)
Page 30: Andropogon Brochure (Chinese Version)

Andropogon in collaboration with Maya Lin Studios designed the University New Gateway, Entrance Drive and the Bell Tower Plaza. The University is located in a landscape with strong physiographic components that give the Campus a distinctive character and identity. Steep forested slopes, capped by dramatic granite outcrops, surround the built form that is located at the base of the valley. The new entrance opens on to a continuous open space, or ‘Central Park’, at the heart of the Campus. The landscape provides a setting for the buildings, and defines a hierarchy of spaces for learning, socializing and recreation. In addition, the open space serves as an important extension of the academic experience, providing a living laboratory for students, faculty and staff.

The design focused on site opportunities and constraints and set the sustainable design principles and guidelines for the project. Andropogon identified an existing wetland east of the library as an opportunity to celebrate the natural systems of the site. Runnels constructed from recycled onsite paving materials collect water from the adjacent landscapes into the expanded wetland. Additional design features included vehicular and pedestrian circulation, streetscapes, and the Bell Tower plaza.

Andropogon, in association with Gensler, served as the lead Landscape Designer and Environmental Consultant for the Master Plan and Urban Design Concept for the International Financial District of the Iskander Development Region (IDR). The International Financial District (IFD) is one of nine Node parcels located within the 27,048 acre Iskandar Development Region overlooking the Straits of Johor between Malaysia and Singapore.

The Financial District was designed to showcase South Johor and Malaysia’s economic health and vibrancy. The completed district will be a thriving, high-density mixed use area anchored by the diverse activities that take place within the international finance center.

Andropogon’s plan integrated environmental strategies into the overall landscape design to take advantage of synergies that come from shared resources within the landscape. The framework plan provides a sense of place by creating a physical network of hilltop parks to complement a vibrant urban life.

A full range of land uses and functions were included in the master plan, including office, hotels, retail, residential, recreation and public amenities. Programmatic elements are connected by convenient public transit, roads, parking, open space network, and infrastructure.

Andropogon Associates, in collaboration with KlingStubbins, designed the master plan for this 110-Hectare development in Abu Dhabi. The mixed-use development included a residential component, a 5-star eco-hotel on a mangrove island and an organic farm.

The 60-hectare development on the manrove island included a wildlife visitors’ center, 21 eco-cabins, and a restaurant. Sustainable design elements included on-site energy and portable water production, all from renewable resources. In addition, extensive programs were developed to protect the existing mangroves as well as establish new mangrove habitats. The 13-acre organic farm was planned to supply the residential community and the on-site restaurants with locally grown fresh produce.

Andropogon designed the Sustainable Landscape and Site Master Plan for Lisi Lake; a 355-hectare, sustainable Mixed-Use development just north Georgia’s capital city Tbilisi. The ambitious plan of the projects developers to create Georgia’s first wholly sustainable mixed use development was compounded by the site’s challenging topography and the depletion of the water table resulting in dramatically lowering lake levels and polluted runoff. In addition, Low rain levels, high winds and overgrazing had also exhausted the site of its native soils and vegetation.

Working with GIS and local scientists, Andropogon created an environmental framework to guide the Master plan and development process, and participated in a 10 day charrette in Tbilisi with planners Dover Kohl and architects Moore Ruble Yudell. Andropogon’s understanding of the site’s cultural and natural resources, including hydrology, geology, and regional context helped accommodate the creation of three new neighborhoods housing 45,000, public plazas, recreational facilities, restaurants, shopping, schools, and civic amenities while restoring the natural function and character to the site.

Central to Andropogon’s master planning efforts was ensuring that Lake Lisi be restored to long-term health and vitality. Andropogon developed a threefold system of treatment wetlands, new protective marshes and water harvesting to manage site water. In addition to improving the hydrology of Lake Lisi, the environmental framework guided the creation of an open space network across the site to protect key habitats and corridors from development while accommodating a system of trails. Andropogon worked with local horticulturalists and ecologists to identify and collect appropriate native species that will contribute to the restoration of soils and habitats across the site’s open spaces. Accompanying the Master Plan were Sustainable Site and Landscape Guidelines that provided phased outlines for the responsible development of Lake Lisi.

Andropogon was selected as a finalist for the design of the 2008 Summer Olympics site in the City of Beijing, China. Andropogon’s partners in the competi-tion included the China Center for Landscape Architec-tural Design and Planning.

The plan for Forest Park and the Central Zone of the Olympics site includes more than eleven square kilometers of programmed open space and natural areas. As one of the largest proposed urban re-creations of natural systems in human history, the transformation of derelict urban land into re-created nature would become the “green heart” of the city.

The plan included strategies for urban renewal, trans-portation, forest restoration, flood control, recreation, and habitat re-creation.

The purpose of the park was to provide both a natural and urban public environment for the residents of Beijing. The plan proposes the creation of a diverse topography on a formerly flat plain using material from the lake excavation and other sources to provide a variety of appropriate potential plant and animal habitats from lake edge to hilltop. Because Beijing receives less than 32 inches of rainfall annually, the 250-acre “Dragon Lake” required recycled water from additional sources.

The plan proposes several methods of recycling water:

• extensive wetlands designed to mimic rice paddies to cleanse water discharge.• proposed sewage treatment plants to service future communities built around this new “Green Heart.”• circulation of lake water through additional treat ment systems to maintain the health of the lake.• treatment of black water by “living machine” technology to provide additional sources of water.

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

In collaboration with Fred Schwartz Architects and Creative Group, Andropogon participated in a competition for the Indian Institute of Technology Rajasthan, Jodhpur (IITJ) Campus Master Plan. The client’s goal was to establish an international brand for the institution and reinforce IITJ’s international reputation as a world technical leader.

The team’s design scheme set out to build a self-sufficient, green “oasis” of knowledge in the middle of Rajasthan’s Thar Desert; one that integrated comprehensive sustainable approaches to urban design and planning, landscape, architecture, infrastructure, transportation, energy, water and engineering. For each discipline three approaches were considered to achieve a net-zero energy plan:

• Passive no-energy systems inspired by time-honored traditional practices of the past;

• Active low-energy and efficient systems of the present;

• Innovative new and emerging systems of the present and future.

Proposed to be constructed on a green field site, ideas for the new IITJ Campus utilized the site’s existing natural resources, vegetation, soils and waterways as the basis for planning. The landscape and ecology proposed was based on an understanding of the program requirements, the site’s natural resources and the desire to restore and manage the site’s natural systems of soils, water, plants and animals.

By celebrating the infrastructure of the campus rather than hiding it in pipes and conduits, the design itself becomes a teacher, showcasing both what has worked for thousands of years to sustain the people who inhabit this area, as well as what is only today being dreamed of and manufactured for the first time. India Institute of Technology Rajasthan, as imagined by Andropogon Associates, would serve as an icon of regional sustainability.

NIKKO KIRIFURI RESORT 日光市雾降服务区MINISTRY OF POSTS & TELECOMMUNICATIONS / NIKKO CITY, TOCHIGI PREFECTURE, JAPAN 邮电部 / 日本,枥木县,日光市

Andropogon was the landscape architect and site designer for a new resort hotel and spa complex located in a mountainous area of Japan adjacent to Nikko National Park. Although spectacular in its beauty, the site posed environmental challenges—complex land forms, steep slopes, highly erodible soils, and sensitive woodlands.

Developing the ecological site plan in coordination with architects Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates, Andropogon sited buildings, developed a stormwater management system that utilized a series of ornamental ponds, designed pedestrian and vehicular circulation, and directed the restoration of woodlands and a stream disturbed during construction.

The design vision of Kirifuri Resort is intended to evoke the character of a rural Japanese village within a forested setting. The site plan reinforced this theme by siting the new facilities, such as buildings, access roads, bridges, and parking in a context of natural woodlands with minimal intrusion in the landscape.

Andropogon designed a series of paths and trails to provide access for guests into the surrounding natural landscape. The hotel and spa are linked by a covered walkway that crosses a ravine and provides spectacular views to the mountains and down into the stream valley below. A Loop Path for hiking and nature exploration takes the more adventurous guest through the forest and along the stream valley. Traditional Japanese craft techniques are reflected in the design and construction of several pedestrian bridges along the path.

Andropogon’s objective was to protect the ecological integrity and natural beauty of the site. The primary concern was to minimize damage to natural systems during construction, and to restore disturbed areas of the site’s stream and forest. To facilitate site recovery, extensive protection measures were installed to limit soil disturbance, erosion, and compaction. Restoration plans were made for the short section of stream that was buried by the temporary construction road. Boulders and vegetation were documented with photographs and sketches to reestablish the proper stream channel. After the construction road was demolished, the stream’s steep ravine slopes were reconstructed and reinforced with chain-link mats and erosion control blankets to secure the unstable, erodible soils. Tree seedlings were planted through the mats and a herbaceous forest ground layer was seeded onto the slopes to enrich the stream habitat. A new woodland path for spa guests follows the alignment of the former road.

At Nikko, the stormwater management system is based on a series of three retention basins connected by waterfalls. Stormwater runoff from roads, parking lots, and roofs first flows to a small upper pondto reduce the water velocity and settle out silt. Runoff then flows to a second, lower pond that serves several functions: providing flood retention for a twenty-five-year storm, serving as a reservoir, and mitigating peak storm flow.

Water is continuously recycled between the second and third pond, cascading down a spectacular waterfall. This last pond, which is closest to the hotel, is designed as a Japanese water garden which can be seen from most guest rooms. Although the third pond is strictly ornamental, it uses the stormwater from the second pool to maintain its water level.

As a member of the master planning & site development team led by architects Perkins + Will, Andropogon served as the landscape architect and ecological planner for the new U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters on the West Campus of the former St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, D.C.

The St. Elizabeths Campus, a National Historic Landmark located 2.5 miles from the U.S. Capital, is a 182-acre site with 61 buildings, abundant open space, a Civil War cemetery, and stunning views of the surrounding area. The aim of the landscape design for the Headquarters was to reflect the richness of the place while also functioning programmatically, ecologically and aesthetically.

The sustainable directives for the project included development to achieve a “Gold” Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) rating.

Overall the landscape structure appears to those outside of the site as if the surrounding woodland is sweeping through the courtyards, but also respects the historical landscape of the St. Elizabeths Campus. The site is designed with multiple courtyards for users to immerse themselves in nature and also provides venues for gathering and celebration.

The exterior spaces of the project site were designed to be high performance landscapes that integrate with the building systems. These systems provide ecological, aesthetic, programmatic and educational services. The ecological function of these landscapes harvest, treat, and reuse stormwater that is generated from both the site and buildings These landscapes also help to reduce energy consumption of the buildings by shading south facing windows, reducing the heat island effect on the roofs and paved surfaces, and provide wind attenuation during the winter months.

The upper courtyard features a small amphitheater that functions as a gathering space and overlooks a meadow water feature below. A water feature treats stormwater from the roofs and also provides semi-private spaces for individual contemplation and small group gatherings. Water continuously circulates and, along with native plantings, creates a pleasant microclimate and retreat, especially in the warmer months. A green roof to the west of the courtyard is accessible to users.

The design for the lower courtyard space draws on the misty and foggy atmosphere that Washington D.C. and its rivers commonly craft throughout the low lying area. The courtyard has a permanent pool of water at a shallow depth to maintain a moist and cool environment, but is also capable of detaining larger storm events. With elevated boardwalks, this area serves as a space for individuals and small groups.

The new Dorrance H. Hamilton Building, the first major structure to be built at the Center City Philadelphia medical school campus in 15 years, opened in early 2008.

The state-of-the-art building, by architects Stantec (formerly Burt Hill), was part of a $60 million expansion-and-renovation project that also included a 215-space underground parking garage and a 60,000-sf plaza for use by students, faculty and the community. Andropogon’s expansive green plaza transformed the 14-acre urban campus by providing a new “heart of campus” where formerly two parking garages consumed half a city block and overshadowed the functions and identity of the University.

The plaza is designed to accommodate academic events and ceremonies as well as be inviting to the surrounding urban community with its cafe, public art, and diverse, shady seating areas. The plaza landscape is irrigated by rainwater and air conditioner condensate collected in underground cisterns. The elliptical forms radiating from the center make this space, confined by tall buildings, feel expansive. Trees embrace both the oval at the center and the large event lawn, but the openness of the site helps make the plaza feel welcoming and secure.

A permanent, structural stormwater BMP, incorporated into the new building, reduces stormwater discharge to the City sewer by diverting water to irrigation systems. Stormwater runoff from roofs, and condensate from air conditioners, is collected in an underground cistern beneath the plaza. This water is used to irrigate the plaza’s plants (one inch of rainfall provides one week’s worth of irrigation).

Project Benefits:1. This system removes ½ of a city block from the city’s

stormwater system during a one-inch rainfall event. 2. System diverts and recycles the toxic “first flush” –– the

first inch of stormwater runoff. 3. Runoff volume is reduced by both soil infiltration and

by plant transpiration (organic materials augment the engineered soil to increase water-holding capacity).

4. System illustrates the use of air conditioner condensate for irrigation.

5. The rainwater-fed irrigation system saves $1,600 per year in water costs.

Shoemaker Green is a 3.75 acre site located immediately east of 33rd Street between Walnut and Spruce Streets, and is a major component of the east-west connection between the central campus and Penn Park, serving as a new continuation of the Locust Walk / Smith Walk corridor. The site is surrounded by two of the University’s most iconic athletic facilities – the Palestra and Franklin Field, and serves as the “front doors” to these historic structures. Shoemaker Green’s program is mainly passive recreation, but the site has the ability to adapt for multiple events and activities with a wide range of scales, from secluded areas to eat lunch all the way up to staging areas for the Penn Relays and graduation. By way of carrying over the essence of College Green, while still retaining a character all its own, the site is the heart of Penn’s eastward expansion.

Andropogon redesigned King’s College Road to visually and spatially connect a main commercial street with the ceremonial green in the heart of University of Toronto’s historic precinct. The roadway, sidewalks and adjacent building lawns were recreated as prime pedestrian spaces on campus. Parking was relocated, excess paving removed, and building greens increased, enriching the overall character of the street.

Pedestrian corridors, adjacent to King’s College Road, once desolate sideyards and leftover parking areas, were redesigned as beautiful and logical passageways to buildings and other landscapes.

The redesigned road, pedestrian walks, and entry plazas to the buildings unify the diverse architectural styles and provide a consistent landscape design vocabulary for future open space projects.

Andropogon is developing plans for the new 14-acre Al Jamea tus Saifiyah campus in Nairobi, Kenya, with the design team of FXFOWLE Architects, Frederic Schwartz Architects, Burhani Design Build, Arup, and Triad Architects. The school will be one of three worldwide campuses of the Daudi Bohra sect that will provide advanced, contemporary Islamic education. The campus is organized around a central core of formal gardens inspired by the Quran, buffered by edges with native landscaping that gives way to informal gardens in residential and recreational areas. The buildings and landscape will be fully integrated throughout the campus, with buildings connected by covered walkways running alongside gardens and courtyards which will allow every room to be connected to the landscape.

Andropogon’s design for the courtyards and gardens is inspired by the major character zones of the Nile Basin, utilizing formal and informal water features, significant Quranic plants and fruits, as well as native Nairobi trees and flowers. The landscape will be integrated into all aspects of learning, designed to heighten awareness of environmental stewardship and the connectedness of all things. Fatemi design principals are incorporated into the site design to create a restorative and productive landscape that is integral to the educational mission, while promoting biodiversity, improved microclimate, and water conservation.

Andropogon collaborated with architects Kieran Timberlake Associates to develop a Master Plan for articulating the campus landscape within the larger urban grid, while creating intimate environments for individualized learning. Andropogon’s Landscape Master Plan & Site Design included new play areas, native plantings to provide screening for neighbors, a green roof on the new building addition, and a central courtyard with a constructed wetland designed to utilize storm and wastewater for both ecological and educational purposes. Andropogon’s plan integrated water management solutions into the landscape, inextricably linking the building to its site. The wetland becomes a “working landscape”; using biological processes to clean water while providing students with a vivid example of how such systems work in nature.

THE CROSBY ARBORETUM 克劳斯比植物园THE CROSBY ARBORETUM / PICAYUNE, MISSISSIPPI 克劳斯比植物园 / 密西西比州,皮卡尤恩

Andropogon developed the master plan for the country’s first ecological arboretum—a living museum where plants are studied, protected, and displayed outdoors in their native habitats. Originally an abandoned strawberry field, the site was initially uniform and undistinguished. Andro-pogon designed the arboretum’s new Piney Woods Lake to bring the site to life for the arboretum’s habitat exhibits. The design goal was to synthesize art (drama, beauty, and expression) and science (correct relationships between plant and plant, and plant and place). All master planning for the arboretum—the site plan, interpretive paths, plant displays, architecture, and site management techniques—revealed the natural processes of the Piney Woods and expressed their evocative qualities.

1991 HONOR AWARD IN MASTER PLANNING & LANDSCAPE DESIGN from the American Society of Landscape Architecture. “It is ecological design at its best, a model for other practitioners to emulate.”

2000 Centennial Medallion “recognizing significant works of landscape architecture,” from the American Society of Landscape Architects

The Piney Woods Lake, although not originally on-site, was created to make a uniform lowland more dramatic and interesting to the public. The new lake evokes a southern, rain-fed swamp under a canopy of trees with a foreground of rushes, sedges, and aquatic wildflowers. A rich array of native plant communities of the region is presented to visitors. The long-term monitoring and management of the recreated plant communities will provide invaluable information for future restoration.

The design for the new Constitution Gardens is a place of respite, regeneration and romance. Great parks form a compact between arcadia and city, leveraging and integrating two fundamental components: nature and people. This biophilic design harnesses nature to transform Constitution Gardens into a picture of healthy water, soil, foliage, habitat and people to create an engaging urban interface.

A healthy and vibrant lake is at the heart of the new Gardens’ design. Variegated shorelines, paths, and boardwalks offer multiple ways to experience this water centric park. The lake and surrounding landscape become an adaptable, regenerative, living system requiring zero potable water.
