Wine Frenzy

5 NAPA VALLEY: CABERNET SAUVIGNON, STAGS' LEAP VINEYARDS, ARTEMIS, 2006

The winemaker tells us "The 2006 Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot. Focused and complex, the wine opens with aromas and flavors of black fruit—blackberry, currant, and plum—that slowly give way to layers of nutmeg, rosemary, grilled game, and warm pie crust. This firmly structured and full-bodied wine gains depth and richness through the finish. Enjoy this wine with filet mignon with green peppercorn cream sauce or braised veal shanks with green olives and capers." Audrey Tepper & Michael Zisk Value: $50.00 6 NAPA VALLEY: CABERNET SAUVIGNON,

CHAPELLET, 2006 Assertive herb, anise, blackberry and wild berry fruit is tight, firm, tannic and well-structured, picking up depth and length on the finish. Janet & Chuck Spencer Value: $50.00 7 FRANCE: BURGUNDY, CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY,

DOMAINE MICHEL MAGNIEN, 2005 Delicate, supple texture in this medium-intense Pinot. Not a big wine, but shows raspberry, wild strawberry and cherry character. Chewy finish. Al Benavides & Martha Moss Value: $55.00 8 NAPA VALLEY: CABERNET SAUVIGNON,

9 FRANCE: BURGUNDY, CLOS DE CELLIER AUX MOINES, GIVRY 1ER CRU, DOMAINE JOBLOT, 2006 Fresh strawberry, and floral notes on the nose, which is lively. High-toned red fruits, lithe and sinewy, tart and refreshing. What it lacks in volume it makes up for in clarity. Marsha Pearcy & Kim Sperduto Value: $65.00 10 SONOMA: CABERNET SAUVIGNON, CHATEAU

ST JEAN, CINQ CEPAGES, 2004 Cinq Cépages ("Five Varieties") is a Bordeaux-style blend consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. Each component is aged separately for two years in small French oak barrels before blending. Once the wine is assembled, it spends six months in the bottle before release. Inviting aromas of boysenberry and violet define the nose of this flagship Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon. The palate offers a graceful balance between fruit extract and fine-grained tannins. This deep, concentrated wine has a classic Cinq Cépages structure with beautiful oak integration and a lushness throughout that leads to a lingering finish. Jean & Bill Catherwood Value: $70.00 11 NAPA VALLEY: CABERNET SAUVIGNON,

CAKEBREAD CELLARS, 2006 Intense fruit flavors with balanced acidity and firm young tannins. This complex wine has a beautifully structured wine with bright blackberry, boysenberry and blueberry aromas and mouth filling black fruit flavors. Twenty months' aging in French oak barrels polished this fine Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Robin Levis & Bill Chin Value: $77.00 12 SONOMA: WILLIAMS SELYEM SONOMA COAST

PINOT NOIR, 2004 According to the winemaker, "Rich and dark in color, the nose of this wine exhibits aromas of wild berries, pomegranates, sandalwood, cardamom and toasted vanilla beans. The mouth is filled with flavors of raspberries, truffles, dried cranberries, roasted nuts, Asian spices and mocha. The Coastal acidity and concentrated tannins accentuate the ripe, wild berry flavors and lingers into the long finish. Ann & Paul Friedman Value: $80.00

13 NAPA VALLEY: CABERNET SAUVIGNON, FLORA SPRINGS, 2002, RUTHERFORD HILLSIDE RESERVE

Displays all the ingredients for excellence, offering impressive meaty, smoky, oaky flavors before the leathery currant and dried cherry fold in. Young, dense and tightly wound, it needs time in the cellar, but the flavors build to a wonderful aftertaste. Brenda Pomerenke & Larry George Value: $85.00 14 SONOMA: WILLIAMS SELYEM CENTRAL

COAST PINOT NOIR, 2004 A broader, more obviously ripened and somewhat fuller-bodied that its slightly more measured and brighter siblings. It does share in the deep and generous fruit that marks every one of the Williams Selyem 2004s, and in this wine, that fruit is a bit riper, a bit more black cherry-like and carries a mild suggestion of milk chocolate. Ann & Paul Friedman Value: $80.00 15 FRANCE: BORDEAUX, PAUILLAC, CHATEAU

DUHART-MILON (ROTHSCHILD), 2005 "Heaven in a glass", and "undeniable elegance, full-bodied and very silky and big, chocolatey and rich" according to various renowned wine critics, this Fourth Growth Grand Cru Classe from a Rothschild Estate in Pauillac comes from possibly the best Bordeaux vintage of our times, the famous 2005 growing season. Michael Buckley & Joellen Brassfield Value: $90.00 16 SONOMA: WILLIAMS SELYEM RUSSIAN RIVER

VALLEY PINOT NOIR, 2004 Smooth gradient from the outer rim to a beautiful garnet center. Mostly clear but with a gentle 'Pinot' haze. Raspberries on the nose and just a whiff of woodiness. Rich raspberry flavor up front with a subtle acidity that provides a well balanced finish. Ann & Paul Friedman Value: $80.00 17 FRANCE: BORDEAUX SUPERIEUR, CHATEAU

LESCOURS RESERVE, 1989 The nose offers attractively earthy aromas. There's some rock/mineral as well as beef and leather and a hint of cherry as well. Well-rounded and inviting nose. This is a medium bodied wine that is very well balanced. Pam & Bruce Skinner Value: $100.00

18 FRANCE: BORDEAUX, ST EMILION PREMIER GRANDE CRU CLASSE, CHATEAU BEAU-SEJOUR BECOT, 2005

The bottled 2005 Beau Sejour Becot confirms that this is the finest effort from this estate in the past thirty years. A classic blend of 70% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, it is an intense, full-bodied St.-Emilion revealing notes of espresso roast, chocolate, blackberries, licorice, and truffles. With sweet but noticeable tannins, good acidity, and a powerful, long finish, this textbook St.-Emilion cuts a swath between the modern school of winemaking and the traditionalists. Wendy & Bob Kenney Value: $103.00 19 FRANCE: RHONE, CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE,

CHATEAU DE BEAUCASTEL COURTHEZON, 2006

Powerful, with a round, almost creamy core of blackberry and raspberry fruit all layered with cocoa, sweet toast, mesquite and fig paste. Long and rich through the finish. Still quite primal, with lots in reserve. Michael Wu & Ellen Stanley Value: $105.00 20 NAPA VALLEY: CABERNET SAUVIGNON,

STAGLIN FAMILY VINEYARD, RUTHERFORD, 2005

A brilliant showcase of ripe, pure Rutherford Cabernet flavors, brimming with currant, blackberry, black cherry and plum. Shows pretty floral and cedar, mocha-scented notes, with a long, rich, focused aftertaste that picks up hints of herb and sage. Brenda Pomerenke & Larry George Value: $141.00 21 NAPA VALLEY: CABERNET SAUVIGNON, RUDD,

2001, BLENDED It's a rare day that you come across a wine that is rated 95 by Robert Parker. He praises its "massive flavors that ooze across the palate with great richness, purity and equilibrium." This very high-end Cabernet Sauvignon deserves your favorite recipe, such as red meat with mushrooms and a wine reduction sauce. Or allow it to caress your tongue in an unaccompanied solo performance that, as one reviewer writes, is "quintessential in its poise, depth of character, and flavor." Jim Lintott & May Liang Value: $150.00

22 NAPA VALLEY: CABERNET SAUVIGNON, SCHRADER-CCS, 2005, KALON VINEYARD, ANGWIN

Dark and intense, with firm, structured currant, black cherry, blackberry and spicy, cedar flavors that provide backbone and depth. Young and tight, this needs time, revealing an elegance and refinement on the finish. Marie-Therese & Jean-Jacques Retourné Value: $200.00 23 NAPA VALLEY: CABERNET SAUVIGNON, OPUS

ONE, 1998, ROBERT MONDAVI/BARON PHILLIPE DE ROTHSCHILD

Elegant, polished, supple and complex, with pretty currant, cedar, anise, sage and tar notes. Turns firmly tannic. Eileen & Arthur Mason Value: $150.00
