Join the 11th annual Kawahigashi Minazuru Matsuri. The festival is a tribute to the folk tale, Minazuru Hime (Princess Minazuru). Because Princess Minazuru longed for her lover, the military general Minamoto-no-Yoshitsune, She sought his whereabouts all the way from Kyoto to Oshu (Currently Iwate Prefecture; in the northeast of Honshu.) The festival starts with a memorial service for princess Minazurus soul, and a performance by local junior high school students dressed up as princess Minazuru and Minamoto-no-Yoshitsune. Here are some of the other fun events: A flea market, a traditional folk dance Aizu Bandaisan (Mt.Bandai), paper-craft work shop, fireworks at night, and more!

We recommend you use the community bus, Minazuru-go for transportation to and from the event. To learn more about the bus, refer to the chart below.

*-----------------------------------------------------* Whats the folktale Minazuru Hime about? In the late Heian Period (around the 11th century), a beautiful princess, Minazuru met Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a general from the late Heian Period to early Kamakura period, and fell in love with him. After Yoshitsune had left Kyoto for Oshu (currently Northeast Japan, Iwate prefecture), she looked for him from Kyoto all the way up to Kawahigashi-machi, but was unable to find him. Overwhelmed with grief, she threw herself into the Nanba Pond in Fujikura-Shuraku, Kawahigashi town. Her gravestone now stands near Nanba Pond. It is said that once you pray at her gravestone, you will be able to find your soul mate.

Measure Your Weight During the summer, people tend to gain weight because of many opportunities to eat out. In order to control your weight efficiently, first, make a habit of measuring your weight. Points of Weight Control Do not eat to the point of feeling full at each meal. Eat a well-balanced diet (staple foods, vegetables, and protein). Eat vegetables first. Vegetables usually need to be chewed more, and will make you feel

full more quickly. Make sure to get enough fiber, as it controls blood sugar levels. Vegetables, seaweed, and

mushrooms contain large amounts of dietary fiber. Check the amount of sugar contained in drinks. Inquiries: Kenko Zoshin-ka (Public Health Division 0242-39-1245)

With the coming of the 150th anniversary of the Boshin War next year, lets learn about locations related to the war. Jurokkyo Bridge (Minato-machi Akai)

On August 22nd, 1868, the Meiji government army was marching to the Tsurugajo castle town by crossing the Bonari Toge Ridge. The Aizu clan army attempted to destroy the Jurokkyo Bridge in order to halt their progress. However, before they were able to destroy it, the government army had crossed and the battle began. At the time, only volunteer soldiers were left to defend the Aizu clan, as the primary military units had taken up a position at the Aizu border. They had only old fashion artillery at their disposal, and were unable to destroy the bridge before the enemy had crossed it. The battlefield moved to Tonokuchihara, which eventually led to the tragedy of the 2nd unit of the Byakkotai Brigade.

After that, the Jurokkyo Bridge was rebuilt as a bridge which also served as a water gate in 1880. The current bridge was reconstructed in 1914, and has been designated as part of the Industrial Modernization Heritage by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Note: Application is required to tour the inside of the water gate. Tours of the outside of the bridge and the water gate are free. Please inquire for the details.
