Difficulties on kindergarten admission is still a common problem.

Many children have no access to early childhood education, particularly children living in the mountainous area and ethnic minority children who cannot speak mandarin, resulting in poorer academic performance and high dropout rates in primary school. In the long-run, poor achievements in education, due to difficulties faced, in many cases because of lack of kindergarten preparation, failed to allow children to gain the knowledge to get skilled work. Furthermore, due to hardships faced in rural areas, these younger generations have moved to work in cities and urban areas, leaving their children in the villages with grandparents. Their needs are often being neglected and have a high risk of accident.

ECCE is one of the nine themes of AEA. In October 2011, AEA established a kindergarten in the poor rural area of Tiandong County and has subsequently launched teacher training and community advocacy activities to ensure the sustainability of the ECCE project.

Q: How would you describe the importance of ECCE?A: ECCE is very important to the all-round development of our children. During this stage of early childhood, their brains have the fastest rate of development and are in the most malleable stage. Adequate education in this stage not only lays a strong foundation for their growth, but also benefits the long-term development of the society at large.

Q: What are the major challenges of ECCE works?A: First, the turnover rate of kindergarten teachers is high. Under the shortage of skilled kindergarten teachers, kindergarten education is often conducted by primary school teachers with the same curriculum, including reciting, learning vocabularies and calculations. With this approach, kindergarten education becomes more and more like primary school education and at the same time misses the opportunity to develop children’s potential. Second, there is a serious shortage of rural kindergartens, making children have to walk long distances, threatening the safety of 4-5 years old children on the way to school, which also leads to hesitation to send their kids to school. Third, villagers lack knowledge on ECCE, so there is a need to improve their understanding through community activities and home visits, such as the celebration of Children’s Day on June 1, which aims to raise the community’s awareness of early childhood development through kid’s performance, group games and parent-child activities.

Q: What is your feeling about the front-line ECCE work in Tiandong?A: High level of satisfaction gained when we witness our works can successfully help children to access to quality ECCE and the kindergarten operates smoothly.

My deepest impression, which was also the saddest thing to learn from this trip, is that children were given only one type of vegetable and porridge for their meal. The reason behind this is that the parents could hardly afford to send their children attend school, and the schools are only able to offer minimal meals

based on a very limited budget (RMB 4 per day per child).

China is such a big country and it is not easy for the government to tackle with social and education issues and to ensure each and every child receives basic education. However, with the initiatives by AEA and other NGO, I am sure the education problems in China would improve.

Generous support from Asia Capital Reinsurance Group (ACR) allowed for the initiation of the ECCE project in Guangxi Tiandong County. This 3-year project aims to directly assist 311 children to access to ECEE and enhance their teaching quality, which also indirectly benefits 6,684 villagers. In April 2012, two volunteers from ACR headquarter in Singapore went to Guangxi to visit the village, participated in child

activities and helped decorate the new kindergarten, which was an inspirational experience.

The most impressive thing is that I have learned the realistic meaning of building the kindergarten: to save lives. In Tiandong County, where most are Karst topography, land is generally not suitable for planting crops. As a result, the majority of

young people go out to work, leaving behind their children with the

elderly unattended. A variety of dangerous situations often arise while children play around the reservoirs or hill roads. This is the scenario exactly what kindergartens

want to avoid – to save lives!

AEA has been facing different challenges since its establishment in Hong Kong. However, thanks to the support of our generous donors and volunteers, we are not alone on the road to "Changing the world through Education”!

Through organization of the second charity trip to Cambodia this April, we were able to build up a group of caring and enthusiastic volunteers, most of which only learned about AEA through this trip. Also this time we had more children joining with their parents and we were touched by the children’s genuine sharing on the last day. Indeed we are convinced that the charity trip not only can help the needy, but also brings valuable life experiences to the participants themselves. This encouraged us to organize two more charity trips in Dec 2012: to Guangxi of China in October and Cambodia again in December.

Finally our fundraising focus in 2012 is the production of a TV program to inform the public about AEA’s work in Cambodia and the region, hosted by a special ambassador. We also hope to promote donors to join our monthly donation program as it takes years to achieve the vision of “Education for all”. The program is scheduled to broadcast on ATV Home channel in mid November. Hope you will not miss it!

As a sequel to our first public recruitment of Cambodia Experience Trip last year, in April 2012, a group of volunteers joined AEA to visit Cambodia again. Each volunteer was engaged in raising funds for street children in Prey Veng Province who make their living by collecting garbage or peddling on the street due to family violence or poverty. These funds raised by volunteers are used for providing food, education, medicine and shelter to give new lives to the street children!

● Visit AEA South East Asia Office

● Community visit (Prey Veng) & visit DTN street children centre

Day 3● 探訪 Svay Rolum 學校,

● Visit Svay Rolum School & Cambodia museum

● Visit Rabbit School (School for diabled children)

The volunteer team visited some AEA projects in Cambodia and stepped into the front-line to understand the real needs of the children and how AEA is helping and empowering them. On the second day, the team went to the rural community to visit the villages and the Street Children Centre (where the raised funds are used). They played games with the street children and worked together to make Chinese & Cambodia desserts. Moreover, the team brought to the Centre some second-hand clothes, books and teaching materials, as well as some toys donated by the volunteers.

They also visited Svay Rolum School and the volunteers participated in a cook-ing contest, played group games and had a lot of fun when learning traditional Khmer dance. In Rabbit School, a school for moderate-severe disabled children, the team observed how teachers patiently teach and take care of the children with special needs. Afterwards, the volunteers organized activities to teach the students with mild disability to draw and to make bead accessories.

In the sharing session, each volunteer shared their feelings and learning during the trip, which was very enlightening and encouraging!

The community visit was most impressive. I met children with body figures mismatching their real age due to insuffi-cient food and malnutrition. I felt heart-broken and almost burst into tears. Therefore I support education to help children since early childhood, in the hope that their future life can be enriched gradually.

Apart from raising funds for AEA projects, the trip is a good platform to foster volunteers’ personal growth, while at the same time, to enhance public awareness about AEA’s work and broaden the volunteer base. We plan to organize similar trips to Guangxi in China and Cambodia in this October and December respectively. You can learn more about the trip on AEA website: www.aeahk.org.hk.

Augus(七歲參加者 7-year old participant)

Living in Hong Kong, I am well taken care of and not aware of the difficulties others are facing in the outside world. After this trip, I first learned that there are many countries in the world that suffer from extreme poverty, yet the people there still feel happy. Cambodian kids are enthusiastic and willingly accepted me to join their games; they moved around quickly and climbed up high; they help each other and live along happily - and this is what I should learn from them.

On 28th April, Think Big Theatre organized a charity performance for AEA. All ticket revenue, after deducting necessary expenses, was donated to AEA. We were happy to invite Ms. Jacquelin Chong, a local artist, to be our MC for the opening ceremony. In addition, we invited a dance crew from Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) to perform an opening dance.

To raise public awareness on the reality of poor living conditions in Cambodia and raise funds for AEA’s projects, AEA organized two shopping mall exhibitions in March (March 3rd-4th and March 15th-18th). It was held in Olympian City and Citywalk, with an exhibition of the situation on the ground in Cambodia. There was also a booth set up where books, umbrellas and other items were sold to raise fund.

More than 30 volunteers helped to make the 6-day Charity Sale a success. The team successfully raised a total dona-tion of around HKD20,000 and distributed more than 1,000 leaflets to the public.

This event successfully raised the community’s awareness towards the living and educational problems in Cambodia and also expanded AEA’s public exposure.

There were two short dramas, including one written by a famous drama-tist, Mr. To Kwok Wai, which is official teaching material of the Chinese drama curriculum in Hong Kong’s secondary schools. Therefore, AEA invited individual and corporate sponsors to support secondary students from low-income families to watch this drama for educational purpose. More than 100 students from six secondary schools benefited.

In Hong Kong, we would see people with disability occasionally. However, in Cambodia, 8.1% of the population has a certain level of disability, mostly caused by war, landmines, malnutrition and sickness, over 90% of the children with disabilities have never attended school.

Since 2003, AEA have been working in the field of inclusive education for children with disabilities and a new project has started this year.

Period: 3 YearsOperating cost: Around HKD500,000 per annum

● Access to mainstreaming education for children with disabilities● Improve the rehabilitation and cognitive function ● Income generation activities for families of disabled children, eg. animal raising, vegetable growing and other small business● Improve social inclusion through advocacy activities

Project details

Inclusive Education reduces discriminationKids with disabilities are often looked down upon and treated with great prejudice, therefore parents choose not to enroll them in school. However through AEA’s work, communities are learning that these children, with special attention, can in fact study in normal schools and can get equally high educational marks as non-disabled children. At the same time, with this initiative, we observe that the level of discrimination against them has been softened.

Due to political instability, disasters and other factors, there is a high rate of unemployment in South Asia. At the same time, the young generation usually seeks livelihood opportunities rather than pursuing further studies, which further reduces their employability.

Alleviating poverty through training in alternative livelihoods assists vulnerable populations in attaining improved financial wellbeing, improving these popula-tions ability to send their children to school, enabling children to gain skilled work and therefore sustainably enhancing future local development and livelihoods. Therefore, AEA launched iLEAD (Institute for Liveli-hood Education and Development), a program which promotes market-oriented vocational training and entrepreneurship training to encourage employment. This program targets youth from aged 18-25 who live below the poverty line. Today, iLEAD centres are set up in Sri Lanka, Nepal, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi and Jaipur, succesfully providing valuable market oriented vocational training for more than 66,000 students.

To enhance the sustainability of livelihood education, iLEAD provides training to encourage students to start their own businesses. Through this initiative, it helps to create job opportunities for the community and also to alleviate structural unemployment. As one successful example in this area, the organization iLEAD Creations is an alumni-run social enterprise in India, with all earnings channeled back to the project.

Now, you can support iLEAD by purchasing rainbow bags for HKD80 (Size: 12” x 12”). To make purchases or enquiries, you can contact AEA by calling 2815 3834 or sending email to [email protected].

Dhruba Shrestha, aged 27, from Baglung, Nepal, always nurtured the dream of working in other countries and to be free from poverty. But destiny saw it otherwise; he was not able to complete his schooling because of abject poverty. His father could not afford even a passport, let alone visa fees and expenses on travel tickets. He kept curs-ing his poverty and thought his only option was to do heavy work for the rest of his life.

Until one day he heard about the iLEAD training program, he applied for house wiring training. Upon completion of his 3-month training, he was beaming with energy and confidence to start work in this new industry. He made savings in just a few years time and he started his own business. He now even employs two colleagues who graduated from iLEAD. Currently, he earns about HKD3,000 a month (he earned less than HKD300 a month previously). Instead of chasing after his dream to travel and work elsewhere, he persuaded his friends who were working abroad to return home and make the most of opportunities available in Nepal, to develop the local job opportunities, rather than working as exploited laborers in foreign countries.

There are around 215 million child laborers worldwide (ILO, 2010), and more than half of them work in hazardous environments. More than 8 million are involved in the "worst forms of child labor", ie. child soldiers, prostitution, pornography, trafficking and illegal activities. This problem of child labor severely hinders the expan-sion of “Education to All”, and therefore AEA launched two projects, described below, to help alleviating this problem:
