    Course Description

This course is designed to review and practice mathematical concepts foundon the ACT Test. This course may not be taken or used to show mastery ofstate standards in either math or science. It is a Carnegie elective credit only.Computer software combined with teacher instruction will be used toidentify mathematical weaknesses and make the necessary remediation.Only college bound students who have completed math through geometrymay sign up for this class.

    Domain Standards

Pre-Algebra (23%) Questions in this content area are based on basicoperations using whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and integers;place value; square roots and approximations; the concept ofexponents; scientific notation; factors; ratio; proportions, and percent;linear equations in one variable; absolute value and ordering numbersby value; elementary counting techniques and simple probability; datacollection, representation, and interpretation; and understandingsimple descriptive statistics.

Elementary Algebra (17%). Questions in this content area are basedon properties of exponents and square roots, evaluation of algebraicexpressions through substitution, using variables to express functionalrelationships, understanding algebraic operations, and the solution ofquadratic equations by factoring.

Intermediate Algebra (15%) Questions in this content area are basedon an understanding of the quadratic formula, rational and radicalexpressions, absolute value equations and inequalities, sequence andpatterns, systems of equations, quadratic inequalities, functions,

modeling, matrices, roots of polynomials, and complex numbers. Coordinate Geometry (15%). Questions in this content area arebased on graphing and the relations between equations and graphs, including points, lines, polynomials, circle, and other curves; graphinginequalities; slope; parallel and perpendicular lines; distance;midpoints; and conics.

Plane Geometry (23%). Questions in this content area are based onthe properties and relations of plane figures, including angles andrelations among perpendicular and parallel lines; properties of circles, triangles, rectangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids; transformations;the concept of proof and proof techniques; volume; and applicationsof geometry to three dimensions.

Trigonometry (7%). Questions in this content area are based onunderstanding trigonometric relations in right triangles; values andproperties of trigonometric functions; graphing trigonometricfunctions; modeling using trigonometric functions; use oftrigonometric identities; and solving trigonometric equations.

    Grading Policy.

All work may be re-done to improve scores with the exception of the fourtrial ACT tests. The ACT Test will be taken as the final. There is a$30.00 registration fee that the student will have to pay.

    ACT MATH SCORE LETTER GRADE

    26 A

    25 A-

    24 B+

    23 B

    22 B-

    21 C+20 C

    19 C-

    18 D+

    17 D-

    16 F

Improvement points will be factored into each test, so a student thatscores a final grade of 24 would still be able to receive an A grade if thatstudents initial test score was 21 or lower.

    Course Materials and Resources

A mechanical pencil, a three ring binder and a calculator. A TI-83 orhigher would be best but not required.
