About Bharathidasan University

Bharathidasan University was established in February 1982, named after the great revolutionary Tamil poet,

Bharathidasan (1891-1964). The motto of the University, "We will create a brave new world," has been framed from

Bharathidasan's poetic words: “புதியததோர் உலகம் செய்த ோம்.” The University strives hard to fulfill the vision by creating

an academic atmosphere in the region to see a brave new world of innovation that brings about social change. The

University has been accredited with ‘A+’ Grade by NAAC in the third cycle in April 2019.

Bharathidasan University has advanced to 60th rank among the Indian Universities in National Institutional

Ranking Framework (NIRF), Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, for the Year 2019.

In South Asia, among the universities and institutions of science and technology that figured in the list of university

ranking, Bharathidasan University has secured 49th Rank as per the ranking of Webometrics, the Ranking Web of Higher

Education universities and science and technology institutions.

Bharathidasan University has the largest number of arts and science colleges (151) among all Universities of

Tamil Nadu.

The University has two campuses: one main campus at Palkalaiperur and another city campus at Khajamalai.

The main campus, located at Palkalaiperur on the Tiruchirappalli-Pudukkottai National Highways, has housed

Administrative and Departmental buildings, Central Library, Sports Complex, Bank, Post Office, Canteen, Health Centre,

Staff Quarters, Guest House and Hostels.

The University has 4 Faculty, 16 Schools, 37 Departments and 29 Specialized Centres.

All the Departments and a few Research Centres are offering teaching programmes at different levels – PG,

Integrated PG, M.Phil., PG Diploma, Diploma, Certificate and Ph.D. The University Departments offer five-year and six-

year integrated PG programmes in 11 different disciplines, two-year PG programmes in 37 disciplines, 10 PG Diploma

programmes, 10 Diploma programmes and 14 certificate courses. The teaching programmes are offered under the

Choice Based Credit System (semester pattern) with adequate flexibility and freedom to the students. The extension

services rendered to community, especially to the under-privileged by the Institute of Entrepreneurship and Career

Development (IECD) and the Department of Women Studies are commendable. The University under its Distance

Education mode is offering various UG and PG programmes.

Some of the Departments are supported by DST (Department of Science and Technology) under its FIST (Fund for

Improvement of Science and Technology Infrastructure in Universities and Higher Educational Institutions) programme

and UGC under its SAP (Special Assistance Programme). Bharathidasan University is also selected by the DST for its

support under its PURSE programme in recognition of the high quality publications by some of the Science

Departments.

All the Departments and Research Centres have good infrastructure facilities. In addition to the computers

available in the Departments and Research Centres, the University Informatics Centre has housed a large number of

computers with networking and internet connectivity for the benefit of students, research scholars and faculty

members. Totally, more than 1000 computers are available for students and faculty. All the Departments in the

University have been provided with Wi-Fi facility.

The Central Library of the University has a good collection of books and

e-books in addition to a good number of journals and audio-video cassettes. The library has INFLIBNET and DELNET

facilities. The UGC infonet facility helps the users to access more than 10,000 e-resources including thousands of e-

journals. Through the University's digital library, the students and faculty members can have access to more than 5,000

back volumes and 7,000 electronic books. The library provides open access system for all the users such as students,

research scholars and teaching faculty. In addition to the central library, all the departments have their own libraries.

There are nine hostels on the two campuses of the University. Among them, two are Research Scholars’ (men)

hostels, two are boys’ hostels and five are girls’ hostels. Two hostels are located on the Khajamalai Campus and all the

other hostels are on the Palkalaiperur main campus. Each hostel is provided with a television set and cable connectivity.

Similarly, all the hostels have Wi-Fi facility so that students can access internet from their respective rooms using their

lap-tops. The hostels are equipped with modern kitchen and dining facilities, adequate water facility, recreation centre,

play grounds, and reading rooms with newspapers and magazines. As per the UGC norms, necessary steps are taken by

the Anti-ragging Cell to prevent ragging on the campuses.

The sports facilities include a good gymnasium with multi-gym facilities and a yoga centre, an indoor stadium

and a standard 400 metre athletic track with the facility to conduct all the field events.

During the academic year 2018-19, Job Fairs were conducted regularly by the Placement and Training Cell,

through which 1514 students have been placed in several leading companies with an average salary of Rs.2 lakhs per

year.

General Eligibility :

PG admissions are based on those who have completed 12-year of Schooling and 3-year of under graduation. However, UG students can also apply with their five semester

marks, and their Provisional admission will be confirmed only if they successfully complete their UG Degree Programme.

Application form and Prospectus can be had from the Registrar on payment of Rs.355/- Rs.175/- for SC/ST Candidates belonging to Tamil Nadu on production of attested

Copy of the Community Certificate and for Physically challenged candidates by production of the disability certificate (including GST) by online or sending a Demand

Draft obtained from any Nationalized Bank payable at Tiruchirappalli (drawn in favour of “Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli” on or after the date of

advertisement).

Name and Address of the applicant and the Programme applied for should be mentioned on the reverse side of the Demand Draft.

Application form can also be downloaded from the University website in which case, the downloaded application along with the cost of application as mentioned above

should be paid online or sent by way of DD while submitting the filled-in application form.

Candidates applying for more than one programme will have to use separate application form.
