IMPORTANT INFORMATION – PLEASE READ!!!  

Application‐based scholarships require the completion of Coastal Carolina University’s electronic scholarship application.  This application is available through WebAdvisor (https://webadvisor.coastal.edu), by clicking on the 

‘Apply for application‐based scholarships’ link, located under the Financial Aid section.   

Students will be prompted to VERIFY their academic profile when accessing the scholarship application through WebAdvisor.  It is extremely important that the information shown be correct before proceeding with the application.  Incorrect information in the academic profile may limit a student’s opportunity to apply for certain scholarships.  

The deadline to apply, as well as submit any additionally required documents, is 11:59 p.m. March 1, 2013.  

Incomplete applications will NOT be considered.  

Applicants will be notified by May 1, 2013 through Coastal e‐mail or postal mail of their application results.

  In the criteria listed below: • A “new student” refers to an entering freshmen or entering transfer student depending on established criteria.  • A “continuing student” refers to a student who has completed credit hours at Coastal Carolina University.  • “Financial need” is determined by the results of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students 

must have submitted a FAFSA (www.FAFSA.ed.gov) to Coastal Carolina University (Federal school code: 003451) by March 1, 2013 in order for ‘financial need’ to be evaluated and considered for application‐based scholarships with this requirement. 

 

Directions for submitting additional requirements:   • Include your CCU ID#, full name, and current contact information (i.e. cell phone number) on each additionally 

required document; • Save each attachment under the name of the scholarship for which you are applying (i.e. Axelrod.doc;

Dorothy K. Anderson Resort Tourism Management Endowed Scholarship (New freshmen or continuing students)

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 1. Must be admitted as an undergraduate student at Coastal Carolina University; 2. Must be majoring in Resort Tourism Management; 3. New freshman instate students must have a minimum SAT score of 1,200 or ACT score of 24; 4. New freshman out-of-state students must have a minimum SAT score of 1,300 or ACT of 27; 5. Continuing students must have a minimum 2.75 cumulative CCU GPA; 6. Maintain full-time status and demonstrate satisfactory degree progress; and 7. Submit additional requirements. (*see page 21)

*Preference will be given to students with previous hospitality experience.

This scholarship award amount varies and may be up to $1,000. This award is for one year and may be renewable; however, renewal is neither automatic nor guaranteed and a student must reapply for consideration. Applications will be reviewed and recipients selected by the University Scholarship Committee.

Samuel Axelrod Annual Scholarship (Continuing students)

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 1. Must be admitted and enrolled full-time as an undergraduate student at Coastal Carolina University; 2. Must be a Political Science major in his/her junior year; 3. Applicants are to submit an essay of between 1,000 and 1,250 words after reading the book “On Violence” by

Hannah Arendt. The essay may be written on any subject or topic that is inspired from reading the book; 4. Demonstrate satisfactory degree progress; and 5. Submit additional requirements. (*see page 21)

The scholarship award amount varies and may be up to $1,000. The scholarship is for one year. The recipient will be selected on the basis of the quality of the applicant’s essay by a committee of political science faculty with input from the donor, and the successful recipient will be recommended to the University Scholarship Committee for final approval.

Chad Beaty Memorial Scholarship (New or continuing students)

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 1. Must be admitted and enrolled fulltime as an undergraduate student at CCU; 2. Must have demonstrated satisfactory degree progress; and 3. Submit additional requirements. (*see page 21)

*Preference will be given to students employed with Dick’s Last Resort.

This scholarship award amount varies annually. This award is for one year and may be renewed as long as the recipient maintains a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and completes 30 credit hours annually. David L. Brittain Memorial Scholarship (Continuing students) To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:

1. Must be admitted and enrolled full time as an undergraduate student at Coastal Carolina University; 2. Must be a junior of senior; 3. Must be majoring in the Resort Tourism Management Program; 4. Must be a resident of Horry or Georgetown counties in SC, or a resident of Brunswick county, NC; 5. Must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative collegiate GPA; 6. Must include documentation from a community organization (school, charity, church, etc…) detailing the

applicant’s community service; 7. Demonstrate satisfactory degree progress; and 8. Submit additional requirements. (*see page 21)

Two scholarships of $750 will be awarded. Renewal is neither automatic nor guaranteed; a recipient must reapply for consideration. Applications will be reviewed and recipients selected by the University Scholarship Committee.

Nancy Burgen Exercise and Sport Science Annual Scholarship (Continuing students)

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 1. Must be admitted and enrolled full time as an undergraduate student at Coastal Carolina University; 2. Student must be majoring in Exercise and Sport Science; 3. Demonstrate satisfactory degree progress; and 4. Submit additional requirements. (*see page 21)

*Preference will be given to students entering their junior or senior year who are not already receiving significant financial support from other sources; however, students entering their sophomore year may be eligible for this scholarship if there are no junior or senior applicants who meet the criteria.

The scholarship award amount varies and may be up to $1,500 annually. The award is for one year and may be renewed as long as the recipient maintains a cumulative CCU GPA of 3.0 and completes 30 credit hours annually. However, renewal is neither automatic nor guaranteed; a recipient must reapply for consideration. Copies of each personal statement will be provided to the donor for review. Applications will be reviewed and recipients selected by the University Scholarship Committee.

Wayland H. Cato, Jr. – Theresa Roberts Gebhardt Endowed Scholarship (New or continuing students)

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 1. Must be admitted as an undergraduate student at Coastal Carolina University; 2. Must be majoring within the Wall College of Business; 3. Must have financial need; defined as students whose income exceeds government assistance criteria, but who

can demonstrate a quantifiable need for assistance. Financial need shall be determined by the school by evaluating family factors (e.g. family household income, number of family members, number of family members in institutions of higher learning , and the ability of the family to contribute) and other types of eligible assistance (including federal and state funds as well as other institutionally controlled scholarship funds received by the students) in relationship to the student’s and the student’s family’s total cost for the student to attend school;

4. Maintain at least part-time status and demonstrate satisfactory degree progress; and 5. Submit additional requirements. (*see page 21)

Preference will be given to students who show evidence, either in the past or at the present time, of having demonstrated 1) a commitment to a strong work ethic through meaningful work experience in the public or private sector, and 2) a commitment to volunteerism through meaningful community service without compensation.

CCU Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) Scholarship (Continuing students)

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 1. Be a rising CCU junior or senior at Coastal Carolina University at the time of award; 2. Be either a fulltime or part-time student; 3. Maintain a minimum cumulative 3.5 CCU GPA; 4. Demonstrate satisfactory degree progress; and 5. Submit additional requirements. (*see page 21)

The scholarship award varies annually. This award is for one year. Renewal is neither automatic nor guaranteed; a recipient must reapply for consideration. Applications will be reviewed and recipients selected by the University Scholarship Committee.

Coastal Alumni Endowed Scholarship (Continuing students)

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 6. Be a rising CCU senior at Coastal Carolina University at the time of award; 7. Have demonstrated a sincere interest in and support of Coastal Carolina University; 8. Have exhibited involvement with and loyalty to the University; 9. Maintain a minimum cumulative 3.0 CCU GPA; 10. Maintain full-time status and demonstrate satisfactory degree progress; and 11. Submit additional requirements. (*see page 21)

The scholarship award amount varies annually. Out-of-state recipients will receive a monetary award and a tuition waiver to pay in-state tuition rates. Out-of-state tuition waiver(s) may not exceed the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition. This award is not automatically renewable. Consideration is given to, but not restricted to, Student Alumni Ambassadors. The Board of Directors of the Alumni Association will review applications and recommend the successful recipient to Financial Aid & Scholarships.

Coastal Network Cooperative (CNC) Scholarship Endowment in memory of Matt Harper (Continuing students)

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:

1. Must be admitted and enrolled full-time as an undergraduate, degree-seeking student at Coastal Carolina University;

2. Must major in the Resort Tourism Management Program in the Wall College of Business; 3. Must have completed at least 60 credits hours with a 3.0 cumulative collegiate GPA; 4. Must demonstrate satisfactory degree progress. 5. Submit additional requirements. (see page 21)

This scholarship award amount varies and may be up to $500. Renewal is neither automatic nor guaranteed; a recipient must reapply for consideration. Applications will be reviewed by a committee comprised of the faculty affiliated with the Clay Brittain, Jr. Center for Resort Tourism. This committee will provide a ranking of applicants to the University Scholarship Committee.

Conway National Bank Annual Scholarship (Continuing students)

To be eligible for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 1. Must be admitted and enrolled fulltime as an undergraduate student at CCU; 2. Major in Business or Computer Science; 3. Must be a Conway National Bank customer;

4. Must maintain at least a 2.5 CCU GPA; 5. Must be an Horry County high school graduate; 6. Applicant must be a junior at the time of the award, but previous recipients may apply for renewal; 7. Demonstrate satisfactory degree progress; and 8. Submit additional requirements. (*see page 21)

The scholarship award amount varies and may be up to $2,000 each. The award is for one year and may be renewed for second year. However, renewal of this scholarship is neither automatic nor guaranteed; a recipient must reapply for consideration. Applications will be reviewed and recipients selected by the University Scholarship Committee.

Dean’s Excellence Scholarship (Continuing students)

The Dean of each academic college will review applications for Excellence Scholarships from continuing students in each respective college. Most Deans may select up to ten applicants per year and will recommend applicants to the University Scholarship Committee. The Dean of University College may select up to two applicants per year and will recommend applicants to the University Scholarship Committee. Successful applicants will receive a $1,000 per year academic scholarship.

Minimum criteria for the Dean’s Excellence Scholarship include: 1. An applicant must have completed at least 15 credit hours with a minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA from Coastal

Carolina University to be eligible to apply; 2. The recipient must have completed at least 30 credit hours with a minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA from Coastal

Carolina University at the time the scholarship is awarded; 3. The recipient must have demonstrated active involvement in the degree program; and 4. Submit additional requirements. (*see page 21)

The maximum term of scholarship funding will be determined at the time of the award. Continuation of the scholarship is contingent upon the candidate earning at least 30 credit hours annually at Coastal Carolina University with a minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA and the availability of continued funding.

The DeCenzo Family Second President’s Endowed Scholarship (Continuing students)

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 1. Must be admitted and enrolled full-time as an undergraduate student at Coastal Carolina University; 2. Must be in either their Junior or Senior Year; 3. Must be from a neighboring county, including Horry, Georgetown, Williamsburg, Marion, or Dillon; 4. Must demonstrate by service, their commitment to improving the community in which they live, both on and off

campus; 5. Demonstrate satisfactory degree progress; and 6. Submit additional requirements. (*see page 21)

The scholarship award varies annually. This award is for one year. Renewal is neither automatic nor guaranteed; a recipient must reapply for consideration. Applications will be reviewed and recipients selected by the University Scholarship Committee.

J. Kenyon and Leona Strickland East Endowed Scholarship (New or continuing students)

Must be an Horry County resident; 3. New Freshmen must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative high school GPA; 4. Continuing students must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative collegiate GPA; 5. of Humanities and Fine Arts at Coastal Carolina University; 2. Currently enrolled Coastal Carolina University students must have earned at least 15 credit hours with a

minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 at the time of selection; 3. Entering freshmen must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.5 at the time of selection; 4. Entering transfer students must have earned at least 15 credit hours with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 at

the time of selection; 5. Must demonstrate financial need as defined by the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships; 6. Maintain full-time status and demonstrate satisfactory degree progress; and 7. Submit additional requirements. (*see page 21)

Theatre in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at Coastal Carolina University. (Pre-majors are included);

2. Currently enrolled Coastal Carolina University students must have earned at least 15 credit hours with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at the time of selection;

3. Entering freshmen must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 at the time of selection; 4. Entering transfer students must have earned at least 15 credit hours with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at

the time of selection; 5. Must demonstrate financial need as defined by the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships; 6. Maintain full-time status and demonstrate satisfactory degree progress; and 7. Submit additional requirements. (*see page 21)

Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts Board of Visitors Endowed Scholarship for Exemplary Community Service (New transfer or continuing students)

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 1. Must demonstrate a genuine and enduring interest in the well being of others; 2. Must be admitted and enrolled full-time in a degree program in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College

of Humanities and Fine Arts at Coastal Carolina University; 3. Currently enrolled Coastal Carolina University students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at the

time of selection; 4. Entering transfer students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at the time of selection; 5. Applicants must have earned 60 credit hours at the time the scholarship is awarded; 6. Must demonstrate financial need as defined by the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships; 7. Maintain full-time status and demonstrate satisfactory degree progress; and 8. Submit additional requirements. (*see page 21)

The initial award is for one year and the value of the award varies depending on available funding. Recipients may apply for renewal as long as they maintain a cumulative CCU GPA of 3.0, maintain full-time status and demonstrate continuing financial need. Renewal is neither automatic nor guaranteed; a recipient must reapply for consideration by March 1 of each subsequent year. Applications for renewal must include an updated personal statement. The Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts Board of Visitors will make the final recommendation to the University Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Robert C. Elvington Alumni Board Endowed Scholarship (New or continuing students)

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 1. Must be admitted as an undergraduate student at Coastal Carolina University; 2. Must be majoring in a business field through the Wall College of Business or teacher education field through the

Spadoni College of Education; 3. Incoming freshman must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative high school GPA; 4. Current CCU and new transfer students, must have a minimum 2.75 cumulative collegiate GPA; 5. Financial need, as defined by the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships will be reviewed; and 6. Maintain full-time status and demonstrate satisfactory degree progress.

*Preference will be given to graduates of Aynor high school; however if no qualified applicant exists, a qualified applicant from any of the regular Horry County public schools may be considered for this award.

The primary determinant of the scholarship shall be “Merit” with “Need” playing a secondary role. These awards vary annually. Awards are for one year. Renewal is neither automatic nor guaranteed; a recipient must reapply for consideration. The Board of Directors of the Alumni Association will review applications and recommend the successful recipient to Financial Aid & Scholarships.

First Federal Annual Scholarships (Continuing students)

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 1. Must be admitted and enrolled full-time as an undergraduate student at Coastal Carolina University; 2. Must be in their junior or senior academic year; 3. Must be enrolled in the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration; 4. Must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA; 5. Must reside in any of the following counties: Horry, Georgetown, Florence, Beaufort, Charleston, Berkeley or

Dorchester, South Carolina, OR Brunswick County, North Carolina; and 6. Demonstrate satisfactory degree progress.

The scholarship award amount varies and may be up to $1,500 to each recipient. This is a one-time award and is not renewable. Applications will be reviewed and recipients selected by the University Scholarship Committee.

Dalton and Linda Floyd Family Mentoring Program Scholarship (New or continuing students)

The Dalton and Linda Floyd Family Mentoring Program Scholarship is a beneficiary of the annual President’s Golf Tournament at Coastal Carolina University.

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 1. Must be admitted as an undergraduate student at Coastal Carolina University; 2. Must demonstrate financial need as defined by the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships; 3. Must have minimum of one year experience mentoring with the Floyd Family Mentoring Program (the current

term may be used to meet one year minimum) either as a mentor while a student at CCU or as a mentee while attending either Horry or Georgetown Public Schools;

4. Must commit to mentoring with the Floyd Family Mentoring Program throughout the 2013-2014 academic year (December Graduates are not eligible);

5. Maintain full-time status and demonstrate satisfactory degree progress; and 6. Submit additional requirements. (*see page 21)

The scholarship award amount varies and may be up to $1,500 per academic year. The initial scholarship is for one year. Renewal is neither automatic nor guaranteed; a recipient must reapply for consideration. Successful applicants will be selected by the Floyd Family Mentoring Program Scholarship Committee and reviewed by the University Scholarship Committee for final approval.

Ruby M. Forsythe Memorial Scholarship (New or continuing students)

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 1. Must be admitted as an undergraduate student at Coastal Carolina University; 2. New and continuing students must have a minimum high school or collegiate cumulative GPA of 2.75; 3. Must demonstrate financial need as defined by the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships; and 4. Maintain full-time status and demonstrate satisfactory degree progress.

*Preference will be given to applicants from the Waccamaw Neck area of Georgetown County, South Carolina.

The scholarship award amount varies. The scholarship is for one year and may be renewed as long as the recipient maintains a minimum cumulative CCU GPA of 2.75 and earns at least 30 credit hours annually. Renewal is neither automatic nor guaranteed; a recipient must reapply for consideration. Applications will be reviewed and recipients selected by the University Scholarship Committee.

Will and Audrey Garland Alumni Board Endowed Scholarship (New or Continuing students)

The Will and Audrey Garland Alumni Board Endowed Scholarship fund supports two scholarships. Available funding for award each year shall be divided equally between a scholarship for a non-traditional student and a scholarship for a traditional student.

Non-traditional Student Scholarship To be eligible to apply for the non-traditional student scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:

1. Must be admitted as an undergraduate student at Coastal Carolina University; 2. Applicant must be a non-traditional student (age 22 years or above) with a minimum cumulative 3.0 CCU

GPA; 3. Have demonstrated a sincere interest in and support of Coastal Carolina University; 4. Have exhibited involvement and loyalty to the University; 5. The Will and Audrey Garland Alumni Board Endowed Scholarship fund supports two scholarships. Available funding for award each year shall be divided equally between a scholarship for a non-traditional student and a scholarship for a traditional student.

Traditional Student Scholarship To be eligible to apply for the traditional student scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:

1. Must be admitted as an undergraduate student at Coastal Carolina University; 2. Applicant must be a traditional student under the age of 22 years; 3. If an incoming freshman, must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative high school GPA; 4. If a current CCU or new transfer student, must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA; 5. The scholarship is intended for a graduate of Aynor High School. However if there is no qualified applicant

from Aynor High School, then the scholarship committee may, at its sole discretion, give the award to another qualified applicant who is a graduate of another regular Horry County public school (excluding any charter school);

Jamboree location; 2. Must have graduated from a licensed high school/secondary school in India or the UAE; 3. Must be an incoming freshman with a minimum combined SAT verbal and math score of 1,250 and a minimum

of 79 on the TOEFL internet-based test; 4. Show strong academic performance at the secondary school level as evidenced by a grade conversion of all high

school work to the U.S. equivalent of a 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale); 5. Submit a typed essay (no longer than 1,200 words) addressing each of the following:

a. The applicant’s reason for coming to Coastal Carolina University to study; b. His or her plans to contribute to campus life at Coastal Carolina University; and c. How an international study experience will enrich the applicant’s academic and personal/professional

The scholarship award amount will be $3,000 per year per recipient (up to 2 recipients). In addition, the recipient may receive a student assistantship of $1,500 per semester to work in the Office of International Programs or another designated office on CCU’s campus during the fall and spring semesters. Provided funds are available, the scholarship may be renewable to previous recipients meeting the following criteria:

a. Maintain a 3.0 cumulative CCU GPA; b. Be enrolled full-time as an undergraduate student at CCU; c. Remain active in the International Club as well as other on-campus and/or off campus community activities; d. Christina L. Vaccaro Memorial Scholarship (New or continuing students)

The Christina L. Vaccaro Memorial Scholarship is an award given by the friends and family of Christina Vaccaro, a student at the Spadoni College of Education at Coastal Carolina University. Christina’s dream was to become a middle school math and science teacher, a dream she was unable to fulfill, as she passed away unexpectedly in October of 2008. Education was Christina’s passion, and she was as committed to teaching as she was learning. An extremely dedicated student, Christina worked hard to ensure she would be able to offer her students the best education possible. In addition to being a great student, Christina was also a great person; her kindness and good nature were infinite. Though a native New Yorker, Christina fell in love with South Carolina. Over the course of the five years she lived in the area, Christina grew attached. She planned to earn her degree in education and teach locally, giving back to the place that had become her new home. This award was created to celebrate Christina’s life and her aspirations, as well as to honor a Coastal Carolina University student who possesses the same qualities and spirit that Christina embodied and who will carry out her dream of teaching.

To be eligible for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 1. Must be a full-time, degree-seeking student at Coastal Carolina University majoring in Teacher Education; 2. New freshman students must present a minimum 3.5 cumulative high school GPA; 3. New transfer students must present a minimum 3.5 cumulative collegiate GPA; 4.
