On Mission Day, being held this Friday, we will primarily be raising funds for Mary Ward InternaƟonal who support, encourage and empower women and girls living in poverty around the world. The following extract is taken from the global poverty project: Women and Poverty Women make up half of the world’s populaƟon and yet represent a staggering 70% of the world’s poor. For the millions of women living in poverty, their lives are a litany of injusƟce, discriminaƟon and obstacles that get in the way of achieving their basic needs of good health, safe childbirth, educaƟon and employment. Overcoming these inequaliƟes and ensuring that women benet from development requires that the needs and desires of women are not only taken into account, but be put front and centre. Women work twothirds of the world’s working hours, produce half of the world’s food, but earn only 10% of the world’s income and own less than one percent of the world’s property. On average, women earn half of what men earn. Currently, 50 million of the 72 million children currently not enrolled in primary school are girls, and two thirds of the nearly 800 million adults who lack basic literacy skills are women. The impact of educaƟng girls is much greater than the individual. It enables women to have a greater impact on reducing poverty in their communiƟes, as within most communiƟes, women are responsible for providing food, health care and educaƟon of their families. As a community we thus pledge our commitment to the Millennium Development Goals and in parƟcular goals 1, 3 and 5: MDG 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. Target: Achieve full and producƟve employment and decent work for all, including women. MDG 3: Promote gender equality + empower women. Target: Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary educaƟon, by 2015. DG 5: Improve maternal health. Target: Reduce by three quarters, between 1990 and 2015, the maternal mortality raƟo. Target: Achieve, by 2015, universal access to reproducƟve health. Let us Pray: Our most Gracious God, We pray for women everywhere: girls, mothers and grandmothers. We pray for their equality: equal opportunity, access to resources and services, and voices that are heard. We pray for greater awareness and acƟon: from a world watching and a world responding. May we have eyes to see, ears to listen and hearts that care. May we work always for the greater Glory of God, empowering women in all we do. Amen.

Dear Parents and Students

As we enter  the month of May,  the  tradi onal  me  in which we give  thanks  for our own Mothers,  it seems fi ng  that we  turn our a en on to Mission Day raising awareness for the plight of women and mothers globally.  On Mission Day, being held this Friday, we will primarily be raising funds for Mary Ward Interna onal who support, encourage and empower women and girls  living  in poverty around the world.

The following extract is taken from the global poverty project:

Women and Poverty

Women make up half of the world’s popula on and yet represent a staggering 70% of the world’s poor.   For the millions of women living  in poverty, their  lives are a  litany of  injus ce, discrimina on and obstacles that get  in the way of achieving their basic needs of good  health,  safe  childbirth,  educa on  and  employment.    Overcoming  these  inequali es  and  ensuring  that women  benefit  from development requires that the needs and desires of women are not only taken into account, but be put front and centre.

As a community we thus pledge our commitment to the Millennium Development Goals and in par cular goals 1, 3 and 5:

MDG 1:  Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.

Target:  Achieve full and produc ve employment and                 decent work for all, including women.

MDG 3:  Promote gender equality + empower women.

DG 5:  Improve maternal health.

Target:  Reduce by three quarters, between 1990 and 2015, the maternal mortality ra o.

Target:  Achieve, by 2015, universal access  to reproduc ve health.

A Hoax –  A Show Not to be Missed!

On Saturday 5th May, Sam Bull, Flynn Hall, Rebecca Newman and myself, along with our fellow La Boite Theatre student ambassadors, previewed La Boite Theatre’s world premiere production A Hoax. This brand new show features four actors and tells the story of a literary hoax which was inspired by the recent spate of fabricated “misery memoirs.” It is a vicious satire on the politics of identity, modern celebrity and the pedalling of abuse culture. The show is both gripping and humorous. By the second half we were all literally sitting on the edge of our seats! We highly recommend this show

as it is one of the most riveting performances we have ever seen. However, due to the serious nature of the play’s context and the frequent use of strong language it is suitable for a mature age audience only. We therefore recommend this show to any Year 11 -12 Drama students, staff and/or interested parents and friends within our school community. We strongly encourage you all to see this show! If you are interested in attending a performance of A Hoax or any of La Boite Theatre’s main stage productions throughout the year, please contact either myself or one of the other La Boite Theatre student ambassadors (Rebecca Newman, Flynn Hall or Samantha Bull) who will be able to give you significantly discounted tickets. This offer extends to parents and friends of our Loreto College community. We are endeavouring to make the most of this opportunity to represent Loreto College and La Boite Theatre and we want to ensure that we can extend the benefits of the Ambassador Program to the Loreto school community. Year 8 Laptop Program

Our Year 8 students have had their laptops for three weeks now and all the girls are enjoying the extra educational scope that having this laptop and associated software both at school and at home gives them. The feedback from the students and staff has been overwhelmingly positive and I have included a few quotes from some of the Year 8 students below.

“Now I can do my school work and assignments anywhere! It is like taking a piece of Loreto home with me!”. Austen Whitewood

Not only have these computers helped with our school work but also widened our schooling opportunities. It also has saved a lot of paper because now you can just e-mail anyone. Georgia Stannard

The laptops that we have been issued, have given us a fresh new start with a great potential. The thing I like about having the laptop is being able to have all your notes on your computer so you don’t need to have as many books. It has made learning so much easier, especially with teachers being able to e-mail you things in class and work on it at the same time. It really does make life a whole lot easier. Nikita Daley

I like the laptops because it is so easy to type and to access all different sorts of things, we also don’t have to go to the library in class if we need to use a computer. I also like them because the laptops reduce how heavy my bag it when I go home. Nicole Hodge

The laptops have worked extremely well in classes and at home. The teachers have incorporated them into our lessons which make it easier to get up to date if you are away or miss a class. Being able to download textbooks has been a big bonus because carrying multiple textbook home every day can get really annoying and heavy. And the IT help desk is brilliant in that you can always access IT help at school. Mikaela Keyser

My experience with the Year 8 laptop program has been extremely successful. They are very useful for everyday school life including homework; I really like the accessibility to my email and all my work whenever I want, without having to constantly switch work from my USB to my home laptop! I look forward to learning more about my laptop and continuing to work on it daily! Halle Wade

Year 10 Laptop Program The next year group that will join the Loreto College student laptop program is Year 10. The laptop distribution and information day for the Year 10 students and their parents is the first day back in Term 3, which is Tuesday 17th July. All Year 10 parents should have received a letter giving some information about the program and the format of the distribution day at least week’s Parent / Teacher interview. More information is available online from the Student Laptop Portal, which can be accessed from the Loreto College website www.loreto.qld.edu.au by clicking on the Student Laptop Portal link from the quick links menu on the left side of the home page. The information found in this portal is being up-dated presently to include specific information about the Year 10 program. Mr Gavin Swanson - Deputy Principal – ICT

fv|xÇvx WxÑtÜàÅxÇà axãá As always, things are moving at a cracking pace in the Loreto Science Department. Our Year 8s and 10s are currently undertaking their chemistry units so the labs are very active places to be at the moment - full of bangs, flashes and fizzing. The Year 11 Biology students are focussing on ecology in preparation for their upcoming field work on Straddie while our Year 11 Chemistry classes are conducting an extended experimental investigation into water quality. The girls in Year 12 Biology are covering cellular structure and biochemistry and will be moving into genetics and biotechnology in the near future. In our Physics classes, the intriguing topics of quantum mechanics and relativity are being delved into by the Year 12s and the Year 11s are beginning to apply the theory they have covered in kinematics and dynamics in Term 1 to more complex laboratory simulations. The techniques they are practising in the lab at the moment will be applied on a greater scale at Dreamworld early Term 3.

The Science Experience is a three day hands on science activities program being conducted by UQ, Griffith and QUT in late 2012/early 2013. It is open to students who are currently in Year 9 and 10. The program is designed to help students to make decisions about senior secondary and tertiary studies if they have an interest in the sciences. It is also a great opportunity to gain an insight into uni life and meet like-minded students from all over Australia. If your daughter is interested, she can visit www.scienceexperience.com.au or see me at the College. Matt Lourigan - Science Coordinator

fà i|ÇvxÇà wx ctâÄ axãá Our thanks to the 35 members who assisted at the Nursery Road Special School recently. I was very pleased to hear wonderful praise from teachers regarding their eagerness and ability to work with the students at the Special School. The girls’ last activity involved the collection, wrapping and delivery of Easter eggs to the local Meals on Wheels. They also collected enough to go to the local Nursery Home as well as the St Vinnies Family Support Centre at Inala. Well done to everyone involved! Mission Day is coming up and we will ask members to go on roster to sell ice-creams and drinks at our stall. Thanks to our leaders for their fine organisation of events.

In last week’s newsletter, I informed the school community about the ten passionate and intrepid students and two staff who will be undertaking the first ever Loreto/ACCF “real life challenge” to the Northern Territory in the first week of the June/July holidays. Held in conjunction with the Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation (ACCF)and World Expeditions, these students will be undertaking a three day trek on the Lara Pinta trail followed by an immersion into local indigenous culture and an opportunity for community service at the Santa Teresa Ltyentye Apurte Community near Alice Springs. In the process, we will be raising much needed funds for the ACCF, who are committed to helping “close the gap” and improve awareness about cervical cancer in indigenous communities. One such way you could help out is through an on-line monetary donation to our “Everyday heroes” page, which accepts contributions from the community. It is with great pleasure that I can announce that this page is now up and running. To visit the site please go to: http://www.everydayhero.com.au/loreto_college. It is very simple to make a donation and be rest assured that every lit bit of help will be greatly appreciated and know that it is going to a very worthy cause. Diane Hanson - Challenge Facilitator

UâÄÄxà|ÇBaÉà|vxá Triple P: Positive Parenting Program Brisbane Family Psychology is a not-for-profit organisation which works with healthcare providers and the community to provide innovative health support solutions. We're running a Triple P: Positive Parenting Program group at our Salisbury clinic, over two Saturdays in May and June. Triple P is a system of easy-to-implement, well-tested solutions that helps to solve current parenting problems and prevent future problems before they arise. It has been designed to prevent behavioural, emotional and developmental problems in children aged 0-12 by enhancing the knowledge, skills and confidence of parents. It helps parents understand the way their family works and uses the things they already say, think, feel and do in new ways, to support them to create a stable, supportive and harmonious family environment, deal positively, consistently and decisively with problem behaviour and build positive relationships with their children. We are facilitating this group at a reduced cost, in order to ensure as many parents as possible have access. Our next group is being held on Saturday 19 May and Saturday 2 June, from 9:15am to 3:00pm each day. See website for further details: http://www.brisbanefamilypsychology.com.au

Engaging Adolescents Parent Workshop On 27th May 9.00am - 4.00pm at Morningside State School. The workshop will be run by James Brown, Clinical Psychologist.
