(NAPS)—Investing a little time and effort to make sure your tires are road worthy can pay dividends when it comes to safety. Experts say the first step is to make sure your tires are properly inflated.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, underinflated tires contribute to more than 600 fatalities and 33,000 injuries each year. Simply checking your tire pressure can help you stay safe during your next trip.

To get the most from your tires this summer, here are some maintenance tips from the world’s largest tire and wheel retailer—Discount Tire: • Get Pressure Right—Low tire pressure can decrease

fuel economy. Tires may lose up to one pound per square inch per month. The specific inflation pressure number can be found on the vehicle placard located on the driver’s side doorpost, glove box door, fuel door or in the owner’s manual. Custom tires and wheels may change standard air pressure requirements, so if you customize, have a pro check them out before you go.

• Don’t Overload Vehicle— Overloading decreases fuel economy due to increased wind drag and cargo weight. Handling, control and braking are also negatively impacted.

• Rotate Before You Go—Regular rotation helps achieve uniform tire wear and improves road performance. Tires rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles have longer life and help to maximize your tire investment.

• Straighten Up—Proper wheel alignment provides safe, predictable vehicle control and helps tires wear evenly and last longer.

• Bald Isn’t Beautiful—Lack of tread affects the tire’s ability to grip the road. Make sure tires don’t have uneven wear, high or low spots or unusually smooth areas that can decrease traction and increase the risk of road accidents.

A Five-Minute Fix Checking tire pressure and tread is easy and can pay

dividends when it comes to fuel economy and handling. Don’t go by appearances. Use a tire gauge to check since a tire can be 50 percent underinflated but still not appear flat.

Make it a habit to check tire pressure every month and always before a long trip. Use the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure.

Additionally, check tire tread depth by using the “penny test.” Insert Abe Lincoln’s head upside down into the tread. If you see his entire head, it’s time to replace the tire.

their vision for granted, but

what if you started to lose

your peripheral vision,

developed a black spot in

the center of your visual

field, or even went blind

lion American seniors living

with serious vision loss or

blindness, these and other

ple pleasures such as read-

ing, playing cards or watch-

ing grandchildren grow.

Vision loss can also make it

difficult to live independent-

ly, work or drive.

Not all eye diseases can be

prevented, but certain

lifestyle choices can help you

keep your vision healthy. To

protect healthy vision, oph-

five tips to safeguard vision:

1. Get an eye exam. To pro-

tect healthy vision, seniors

age 65 and older should

have a dilated eye exam

every one to two years or as

recommended by their oph-

2. Know your family history.

Eye diseases such as age-

related macular degenera-

tion (AMD) and glaucoma

can run in families, so it's

important to know your

family's history of eye dis-

ease and talk to your oph-

thalmologist about any pos-

sible genetic risk factors.

3. Don't smoke. Tobacco

smoking is directly linked to

many adverse health effects,

including cataracts and

AMD. Studies show that

current smokers and ex-

smokers are more likely to

develop AMD than people

who have never smoked.

4. Eat right. A variety of

vegetables, especially leafy

green ones, are an impor-

tant part of an eye-healthy

diet. Researchers have found

that people on diets with

higher levels of vitamins C

and E, zinc, lutein, zeaxan-

thin, and omega-3 fatty

acids DHA and EPA are less

likely to develop early and

advanced AMD. For deli-

5. Protect your eyes from

your skin a bit of TLC.

least 15 and apply 20 to 30

healthy aging, according

Aging. Move vigorously:

den at least 20 minutes a

day, at least five days a

week. Just remember to

stretch your muscles first.

Joining a gym can not

only be a great way to get

fit, it can be a good place

to find new friends. Studies

show socialization is vital,

especially as you grow older.

The National Institute on

Aging adds that engaging in

social and productive activi-

ties you enjoy, such as taking

an art class or volunteering

in the community or with

your place of worship, may

help maintain your well-

being. Studies have also

found that people involved

in hobbies and other social

and leisure pursuits may be

less likely to develop some

health problems, includ-

ing dementia. They

might even live longer.

3. If you drink alcohol,

do so in moderation-

especially on hot days.

According to the

National Institutes of

Health, people over 65

should have no more

than seven drinks a week

and no more than three

drinks on any one day.

While there are ingredi-

ents in red wine that may

be good for your health,

you can get many of the

same benefits from a glass of

grape juice.

4. If you are a denture

wearer, the idea of dentures

dislodging during dinner

with friends or a meeting

with colleagues can be mor-

tifying. A recent study by

Wakefield Research for

Dig Into Reading is the theme for this year’s Children’s Summer Reading Program continuing throughout the summer. Summer Preschool Storytime Storytime is for children 3,4,5, or 6 who have not been to Kindergarten. Storytimes will be held at 10:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Wednesday & Thursday. Tuesday Morning Adventures feature a variety of storytellers, magicians, and educational programs that families and children of all ages will enjoy.

Beneath the Surface is the theme of the Teen Summer Reading Program 2013. Open to students who have completed the 6th through 12th grades. Program runs June through early August. For anyone who thinks they can talk on their phone, text, apply make-up, or do any other distracting activity while driving, it’s time for a crash course in reality from the National Highwa y Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

• In 2010, 3,092 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver and an estimated additional 416,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver. (NHTSA)

• Drivers who use hand-held devices are four times as likely to be involved in a serious crash. (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety)

• Nine percent of fatal crashes in 2010 were reported as distraction-affected crashes. (NHTSA) • Eleven percent of all drivers under the age of 20 involved in fatal crashes were reported as

distracted at the time of the crash. This age group has the largest proportion of drivers who were distracted. (NHTSA)

For those who think they can do two things at once, think about this: According to a study by Carnegie Mellon, driving while using a cell phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent. Can you really afford to lose that much brainpower? Driving is an activity that requires your full attention and focus in order to keep yourself and others safe.
