Introducing Your Students to Jazz Improvisation as Part of Your Jazz BandExperience

This workshop is intended to give Band Directors some ideas about how to makeimprovisation part of the band experience. Improvisation is a great tool tointroduce many musical concepts to your students while encouraging theircreativity and enthusiasm for music.

We will use some basic Music Theory to explain and investigate soundscommonly heard in all music, and as a basis for student getting started

improvising. Remember “Music Theory” is not EVIL (!), it is just how we canexplain why music sounds GOOD.

The Basics of Music are Rhythm, Harmony and Melody. We can introduce all ofthese concepts through improvisation exercises. We will use Major, Minor andDominant 7 chords and related scales/groups of notes as the basis for theimprovisation exercises. We will use rhythm to create a groove and as animportant creative element for student improvisation.
