As a senior, Murray was the recipient of theAtlantic10SportingAward,SaintJoseph’sfirstever.Hewastabbedfirst‐teamAll‐Atlantic10forthesec‐

ond time in his career after helping the Hawks take the A‐10 CrossCountrytitlein2009andlaterearnedIC4AAll‐Easthonorsthatseason.

In2008,heearnedNCAAAll‐RegionhonorsandqualifiedfortheNCAACross Country Championships. The Jamison, Pa. native earned abachelor’s degree in management at Saint Joseph’s and is currentlyenrolledinthemanagmentmasters’program.

MikeGlavin,a1978graduateofSJU,entershis23rdyearasheadmen'scrosscountryandtrackcoachin2010‐11.After leading theHawks to their fourthAtlantic10Championship title forcrosscountry in2009,hewasnamedAtlantic10Men'sCrossCountryCoachoftheYearforthefourthtimeinhiscareer(1992,1998,2000,2009).Underhiswatchfuleye,theHawkshaveproduced32All‐Conferenceharriers

andfourNCAAqualifiers.Glavinreturnedtohisalmamaterafterahighlysuccessful10‐yearstintastrackandcross

countrycoachatPaulVIHighSchoolinHaddonfield,N.J.Duringhistenurethere,heledthecross country team to a phenomenal 110‐0 record, including three state championships in1984,1985and1988.Histrackrecordwasanequallyimpressive60‐18,whichincludedfourSouthJerseychampionshipsandthe1989statecrown.GlavinwasinductedintothePaulVIAlumniHallofFameinOctober2009.

AstellarperformerfortheHawksasanundergrad,Glavinestablishednumerousrecords,includingtheoutdoortrackrecordforthethree‐mile,the5,000‐meterruns,andtheindoorrecordforthemileandtwo‐mile.HealsoheldtheBelmontPlateaucrosscountryrecordwith

a time of 25:36. Glavin qualified for the NCAA CrossCountry Championships in both his junior and senioryears.

Glavin holds a master's degree in mathematicsfromVillanovaUniversity and is currently teaching atHaddonfieldHighSchoolinNewJersey.The55‐year‐oldresides in Ardmore, Pa., with his wife Julie, and twochildren,GraemeandMichael.

Meyerswasatwo‐timeAtlantic10indoor5,000‐meterchampion,two‐timeAll‐Atlantic10crosscountryhonoree,andA‐10outdoor5,000‐meterchampion.Ontopofthat,Meyerspostedout‐standinggradesatSJU,earningAcademicAll‐Atlantic10honorsforcrosscountry, indoor and outdoor track for the 2005‐06 and 2006‐07 cam‐paigns.TheacademichonorsarethemostreceivedbyanytrackathleteatSaintJoseph’s.

In addition to his bachelor’s degree in economics from SaintJoseph’s, the BethelPark, Pa., native received hismasters’ in businessadministrationfromSJU’sHaubSchoolofBusinessin2010.

FinneseyFieldhasbeenhometo10differentvarsitysquadsatSaintJoseph’sUniversity as it enters its 83rd year.Opened in 1929 as home to the SJUfootballsquad,thefieldhasundergonenumerous changes over the years andhasbeenhometooverathousandSJUvarsitygames,matchesandtrackmeets.

Themostrecentupgradehappenedinthesummerof2008astheAstroTurf,laid down in 2001, was replaced withstate‐of‐the‐artTigerTurf. Additionally,thetrackreceivedanewcoatofrubbermaterial in2009tobettersuit theath‐leteswhouseitforallseasons.

Home to the men’s and women’strackandfieldsquads,thefieldhasseenothermodificationsdone to it since itsinception in 1929. The prospect of a70,000‐seatbowledstadiumforfootballwasdashedwhenthesportwasdiscon‐tinuedfollowingthe1939season.

Baseball re‐occupied the space in1947,callingFinneseyhomeuntil1959.In1960,theoriginalgrandstandaswellasthehillsideseatingnearOverbrookAvenuewereeliminatedasVilliger(nowPost)HallandtheBluettTheatrewerebuilt.Intheprocessofthe1960con‐struction,thefield’selevationwasraisedfivefeettoitscurrentlocation.

In1990,artificialturfreplacedthegrass,makingFinneseyatrulymulti‐purposefacility.In1994theinstallationoflightsfurtheredtheuseofthegrounds,whilenewbleachersin2003onthehillnexttoMandevilleHallwereanoth‐ertouchofrenovationtoahistoricstadium.

SaintJoseph’smen’ssoccerstartedin1958andplayedeveryseasonbutone(1960)atFinnesey.Additionally,men’sandwomen’slacrossebeganin1993andhavecalledFinneseyhomesincetheirinception,whilethewomen’ssoccerteambeganplayingtherein1996.ThefieldhockeyteamwrappedupitslastseasononFinneseyin2007.

Overall,thesitehasseen1,151gamesenteringthe2011‐12academicyear,andSJUteamshaveputtogetheratotalrecordof523‐581‐47in82years.

TheSaintJoseph’sHawkmascothasbeenflappingitswingsfor56years,havingcelebrateditsgoldenanniversaryin2005‐06.

Oneof themost famousmascots in college sports, theHawk isbest known forstaying in constantmotionby flapping itswings throughouteverybasketball gameandrepresentingtheSaintJoseph’smotto,“TheHawkWillNeverDie.”

Saint Joseph’sathletic teamshavebeenrecognizedwiththenickname“Hawks”since1929.Atthattime,theschool’syearbookeditorinitiatedacontestamongthestudent body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with“Hawks”winningoutover“Grenadiers”byaslimmargin.Thenamewasappropriatebecauseittypified“thefightingspiritofourcrimsonandgrayathletesanditissug‐gestiveoftheaerialattackwhichhasmadeourfootballteamfamous.”Football,iron‐ically,wasdiscontinuedatSJUfollowingthe1939season.

TheHawkhaswonnumerousaccoladesandwasanomineeforinductiontotheMascotHallofFamein2008.

The2010men’s cross country teamwas successful in itsrebuildingyearaftergraduatingseveralofthetoprunnerswhohelpedcapturethe2009Atlantic10titleforthefirsttimesince2000.ThisseasontheyoungHawkstopfiverunnerswerecom‐prisedofasenior,ajunior,asophomoreandtwofreshmen.Travelingwithallbuttworunners,theHawkswent5‐2intheDuquesneDuals at SchenleyPark inPittsburgh. JuniorKevinMcDonnell,a2009Atlantic10All‐Conferencehonoree,ledtheHawkswithasecond‐placefinish.Hefinishedthe8Kin25:24whilesophomoreJonMazziofollowedcloselytofinishin10thplace(25:50).

TheHawksthentooksixthplaceof16teamscompetinginthePennStateSpikedShoeInvitational.Inafieldof193run‐nersinthe8Krace,McDonnell ledthewayagainwitha10thplace finish (25:38.6) andMazzio trailed again in 23rd,whilefreshmanAaronLeskow(58th),seniorBrianGuterl(61st),andfreshmanMikeRankin(87th)roundedoutthescoring.

After three weeks of rest the top eight harriers on thesquadcompeted in thecompetitivePaulShort InvitationalatLehigh.TheHawksfinished31stofthe42teamscompetinginthe8Krace.McDonnellledthechargesagainfinishing36thofthe387runnerswhileMazzio(113th)andLeskow(184th)fin‐ishedinthetop200.

TwoweekslatertheHawksplacedseventhof13teamsinthePrinceton InvitationalatWestWindsorFields.McDonnellpostedaseason‐besttimeof24:38.2totakefourthplaceinthe

packof142runnerswhileGuterl,Mazzio,Leskow,andRankinroundedoutthescoring.

TheHawkstraveledbacktoSchenleyParkfortheAtlantic10Championships twoweeks laterandplaced seventhof14teams.McDonnellearnedA‐10All‐Conferencehonorswithhis14th place finish (25:01) in the 8K race. Mazzio, Rankin,Leskow,andCollinsallfinishedinthe26thminutetowrapuptheHawksscoring.

ThesquadheadedbacktoPennStatefortheNCAAMid‐AtlanticRegionalswhereMcDonnellplaced14th(30:35)forthesecondforthesecondconsecutivemeettoearnMid‐AtlanticRegionalhonors.TheHawksfinished12thof28teamscompet‐inginthe10Kcoursewith194runners.Mazziowasthesecondfinisherontheteamforthefifthtimeoftheseasontaking56thplace (31:49)whileRankin,Leskow,andCollinsall finished inthe33rdminute.

BeforetheHawksheadedtoNewYorkfortheIC4Acham‐pionshipstheNCAAannouncedMcDonnellasoneofits38indi‐vidualqualifiers,whichwasoneoffourindividualberthsfromtheMiddleAtlanticRegion.

The Hawks had to compete in the IC4A championshipswithoutMcDonnellandaninjuredGuterlandplaced18thof19teamsracinginthe8KcourseatVanCortlandtPark.LeskowledtheHawksin68thplacewhileRankinandKyleGorczynskifol‐lowedin104thand109thplacerespectively.

McDonnell,thefourthHawkfromthemen'scrosscountryteamtoqualifysince2000(KyleMurray'08,AndreLaboy'03,KarlSavage'00),finishedtheNCAAchampionshipsin173rdoutof246competing inthe10KinTerreHaute, Indiana. It isthe12thtimeinprogramhistorythataHawkharrierhasparticipat‐edintheNationalChampionship.

ThesquadkickedofftheseasoninDecemberattheJackPyrahInvitationalhostedbyVillanovawhereGarrettBarbalinardoearnedawininthe800meterwithatimeof2:00.14whileJesseBrooksfollowedinsecondplace.The4x400meterrelayteamalsotooksecondwhilelookFischerhadathird‐placefinishinthe1,000meterrun.

FischerfollowedthatupwithawinatthePrincetonNewYear’smeetwhilethe4x400mrelayteamofDavidSmith,DerrickHenry,Barbalinardo,andJaredSabreplacedsecondwithatimeof3:21.28.

Returningfromwinterbreak,FischerledtheHawksagainwith a third‐place finish in the 1,000 meter race while Smithearnedaqualifyingtimeof1:05.18inthe500meter.

At thePrincetonRelays,Smith led the teamwithasec‐ond‐placeshowinginthe400meterwhilealsorunningthefirstlegin the 4x400 meter relay to help the squad also place second.Sabreranthe800meterintheteam’sfastesttimeoftheseason(1:56.27)andacareerbest,placingthird.

The following weekend the Hawks competed at theDelaware Thomson Invitational and the Penn State Nationalswhere Sabre earned his first qualifying time of the season(1:03.68)inthe500metertoplacesecond.Thedistancemedleyrelayteamalsoplacedsecondwithaqualifyingtimeof10:08.92.

AtDelawareTomDiNataleearnedawininthe200meter,RyanFenimorewonthe800meter,andthesquadearnedawininthe4x800meterrelay.

As the Hawks opened February at the Yale Giegengackwherethe4x400meterrelaysquadledtheteamwithasecond‐placefinish.Fischerranthe1,000meterinapersonal‐besttimeandtheteamsfastesttimeoftheseason(2:26.97)toqualify forIC4Aandfinishinfourthplace.Fischeralsoranthefirstleginthedistance medley relay that recorded a season‐best time of10:01.00toalsoplacefourth.

In the lastmeet before the conference championships,Fischer led the Hawks in the Lafayette/Rider Winter Games

Invitationalwithasecond‐placefinishinthemile.The Hawks finished the Atlantic 10 Championships in

eightplaceoutof10teamswhileSabreledthewaywithasecond‐place showing in the 500meter, earning All‐Conference SecondTeamaccolades. Smithplaced third in thepreliminary roundofthe400metertoqualifyandimprovedhistimeinthefinalstofin‐ishfourthoverallwhileFischerplacedfourth inthemileandthe4x800mrelaysquadtookfourth.

Sabreearnedawininthe500meteratArmoryCollegiateChallengebeforeheadingtotheIC4Achampionshipsthefollowingweekendwhereheplacedsecondinthe500meterpreliminariesand improved his time to a personal‐best 1:02.47 to place thirdoverall. Smith finished the 500m in sixth place while the 4x800meter relay squad of David Manion, Brooks, Logan Hohs, andFischerfinishedwithaseason‐besttimeof7:36.54toplaceeighthoverall.

The Hawks opened the outdoor season at the end ofMarchintheBig5Meetwherethe4x100meterrelayteam,Sabre(400m),andManion(800m)earnedwins.

Thenextweekendtheteamplaced16thof36teamscom‐petingintheColonialRelays.SabreandKevinMcDonnellledtheHawks with third‐place finishes in the 10,000 meter and 400meter,respectively.

Placing third in the 400meter twoweekends in a row,SabreledtheHawksagainastheycompetedintheBisonOutdoorClassicatBucknellandtheLarryEllisMemorialinPrinceton.

Before heading to the conference championships theHawks relay teamscompeted in thePennRelayswith the4x400metersquadleadingthewaywithafourth‐placefinish.

At theAtlantic 10 ChampionshipsMcDonnell and Sabreplaced third in the 10,000 meter and 400 meter, respectively.Sabre also ran the last leg in the 4x400meter relay to help thesquadplacefourthwhileDanRoarkalsoplacedfourthinthe3,000metersteeplechase.

OnMarch 2, 1975, the idea ofwhat isnowtheAtlantic10Conferencewasconceived.Whatstartedasaneight‐school,men’sbasket‐ball‐onlyaffiliationhasgrownintoa14‐univer‐sity, 21‐sport league that is universally hailedasoneofthebestconferencesinthecountry.

That growth and prominence is a directresult of the ideals and commitments of themember institutions of the Atlantic 10—theUniversity of Dayton, Duquesne University,Fordham University, The GeorgeWashingtonUniversity, La Salle University, University ofMassachusetts,UniversityofNorthCarolinaatCharlotte, University of Rhode Island,University of Richmond, St. BonaventureUniversity, Saint Joseph's University, SaintLouisUniversity,TempleUniversity,andXavierUniversity.

On June2, 2008,BernadetteV.McGladewasnamedthefifthfull‐timecommissionerinConference history, replacing Linda Bruno,whoheldthepositionfor13years.McGlade’sexperienceincollegiateathleticsasastudent‐athlete, coach and administrator spansmorethanthirtyyears.

“Bernadette’s deep experience witharguably the class‐act athletic conference[Atlantic Coast Conference] in the countrymakesusincrediblyexcitedtobebringingheron board as commissioner of the Atlantic 10Conference,” said Father Michael Graham,Xavier University president and president oftheAtlantic10Presidents'Council.

ThepresidentsandchancellorsofAtlantic10 institutions have made a strong commit‐ment to making the academic and athleticsequation work. Over the years, the leaguemembership has strived to better recognizetheacademicaccomplishmentsofitsstudent‐athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll,

which cites every Atlantic 10 student‐athletewitha3.5gradepointaverageorbetter,rec‐ognized1,247student‐athletesintheFall2007while 1,106 were named to the Spring 2008HonorRoll.

The league sponsors Academic All‐Conference teams in each of its sports andhonorsonestudent‐athletepersportastheA‐10Student‐AthleteoftheYear.In2007‐08,192student‐athletes earned Academic All‐Conference recognition. Moreover, theAtlantic10providesfourpostgraduatescholar‐shipgrantstoqualifiedstudent‐athletes.

TheAtlantic10Conferencehad34teamsamongthe712DivisionIsportsteamshonoredby the NCAA with public recognition awardsfor their latest multi‐year Academic ProgressRate scores. These teams postedmulti‐yearAPRscoresinthetop10percentofallsquadsin their respective sports. Saint Louis andXavier led the Atlantic 10 in the number ofhigh‐performingsquadsreceivingawardswithsix teamseach. In twentyof the twenty‐onesports sponsored by the Atlantic 10, theleague'sAcademicProgressRates (APR)wereatorabovetheconferenceaveragenationallyaccordingtothemostrecentdatareleasedbytheNCAA.

TheAtlantic10Conference,witha totalpopulationofnearly74millionpeoplewithinitsgeographicfootprintofeightstatesandtheDistrictofColumbia,will crownchampions in21 sports this season: baseball, men's andwomen'sbasketball,men'sandwomen'scrosscountry, field hockey, men's golf, women’slacrosse,men'sandwomen's indoorandout‐doortrack&field,women'srowing,men'sandwomen'ssoccer,softball,men'sandwomen'sswimming& diving,men's andwomen's ten‐nis,andwomen'svolleyball.
