What on earth is CME, and why should you care?

Page 11: 2008cmehomeandabroad.ppt

Definition (USA perspective)

What is CME? educational activities that

serve to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills, and professional performance and relationships a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public, or the profession. (AMA/ACCME )

Page 12: 2008cmehomeandabroad.ppt

What this means in Plain English:

CME consists of Educational activities that help practicing doctors to learn new information and skills to help them take better care of their patients.

Page 13: 2008cmehomeandabroad.ppt

Around the world CME, is becoming increasingly regulated.

CME

Page 14: 2008cmehomeandabroad.ppt

Most states require physicians to obtain CME credits to maintain their medical license.

Page 15: 2008cmehomeandabroad.ppt

Most Specialty Boards require CME for continued certification.

Page 16: 2008cmehomeandabroad.ppt

Most hospitals requires that physicians obtain CME credits for hospital appointments and re-appointments (credentialing).

Page 17: 2008cmehomeandabroad.ppt

Quality CME activities play a vital role in the life-time learning of physicians and other healthcare providers.

CME

Page 18: 2008cmehomeandabroad.ppt

The ACCME (Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education) was formed to monitor providers of CME in the USA.

Page 19: 2008cmehomeandabroad.ppt

CME is part of the system of accountability in healthcare

CME must be:

Based on valid content

Effective in improving practice

Linked to quality and safety

Independent of commercial interests

Page 20: 2008cmehomeandabroad.ppt

The ACCME’s job is to help ensure CME activities are of scientific merit and appropriate for the people who participate.

Page 21: 2008cmehomeandabroad.ppt

UVA School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide CME for physicians.

New Report Released: ATA’s Global Forum on Telemedicine: Connecting the World through Partnerships

The American Telemedicine Association (ATA) in sponsorship with the USAMRMC TATRC held the Global Forum on Telemedicine: Connecting the World through Partnerships in Las Vegas in September 2007. The goal of the forum was to bring together key stakeholders in global healthcare outreach. This report was generated as a result of this meeting and an International Roadmap for Action was developed that establishes a set of priorities and recommendations for action to improve healthcare using telemedicine and information technology (IT).

Nigeria's telemedicine project is a nine-site program, funded by the country's National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) for the Ministry of Health. NASRDA has installed telemedicine equipment in two Nigerian hospitals, Ibadan Teaching Hospital and Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, as well as some additional, federal clinics throughout the country. Additionally, NASRDA provided a working telemedicine clinic in a bus that will travel to the most remote parts of Nigeria to provide primary healthcare services. Furnishing connectivity for the program, Nigcomsat-1, Nigeria's advanced communication satellite, links the medical data sent from the bus to the in-country hospitals, giving patients and doctors in remote areas access to expert care.
