Nobel K-Series System
Key Benefits
No Stored pressure cylinders
No High pressure gas cartridges.
No Valve assemblies or gauges.
No mechanical pulleys, tensioners,
levers or spring loaded plungers.
Integrates seamlessly and unobtru-
sively with the kitchen environment.
Simple Compact design.
Real time system monitoring for fire
and fault conditions .
Direct integration to house alarm.
Direct integration to fuel knock off
devices.
Stainless steel construction.
Reduced maintenance costs.
ü Enhanced operational safety.
The K-5 Galley Fire suppression system has been designed to meet the require-
ments of ISO 15371. Recent changes to SOLAS regulations mean new demands
have been placed on ship owners and operators to ensure the health and safety
afforded to the ship and crew is upgraded. To meet that requirement, development
has been undertaken to design a complimentary marine version of the highly
successful and well established Nobel K Series Wet Chemical Fire Suppression
system.
Nobel K -Systems are fully independent systems, they are electrically actuated and
use spot heat detectors to detect fire conditions. The detectors are placed directly
over the appliance being protected or in the extract air flow above that appliance.
The cooking appliances can be individually protected or multiple systems can be
configured to suit the demands of any Galley.
Nobel K- Systems can be operated manually using push button switches located
at strategic positions around the kitchen. On receiving the appropriate FIRE signal
the system control panel sounds audible and visual alarms and immediately
initiates shut down of the power supply to the appliance/s being protected. Simulta-
neously the control system deploys the suppressant liquid onto the fire.
The gas required to pressurise the storage cylinder is produced in a controlled
manner from a solid propellant gas generator. The cylinder and gas generator
remain at zero pressure until an electrical signal is received from the system
control panel. On actuation the cylinder is pressurised to 10-12 bar.
The Wet Chemical Suppressant Liquid Nobel-K has been specially formulated
to suppress fires in cooking oils and grease and prevent re-ignition. Rapid fire
knockdown is achieved and the fuel is cooled to below its auto ignition temperature.
A chemical process known as "Saponification" then provides added post fire
security by forming a thick soapy vapour barrier between the surface of the fuel and
the atmosphere.
Low Maintenance and High Reliabil i ty.
Nobel fire suppression systems contain no moving parts and remain at ZERO
pressure until a fire condition has been detected. Consequently there is no scope
for failure due to leaking propellant gas or from faulty gauges, valves or mechanical
linkages. Continuous monitoring of the alarm input and extinguishing output circuits
is undertaken automatically at the control panel and fault modes are indicated
accordingly.
System storage cylinder
The cylinder assembly is manufactured in stainless steel and has a capacity of 5
litres. A bursting disc assembly effectively seals the cylinder and secures the
integrity of the liquid. As the system is actuated the increase in pressure in the tank
ruptures the burst disc and allows the liquid to enter the stainless steel distribution
pipework.

The nozzles have been specifically designed to give rapid knock
down of the flames and fast cooling of the burning oils and fats to
below auto-ignition temperature. Each nozzle is manufactured
from stainless steel and produces a full cone mist. Each nozzle is
protected from the ingress of oils and grease by a protective blow
off cap.
ApprovalsThe K-5 system has undergone independent assessment to ISO 15371:2000: All
designs and testing have been audited, assessed and approved.
Gas Generator technology.
Each system is pressurised using a solid propellant gas generator, producing gas
at a pre-determined pressure to achieve maximum
system performance. The gas generators are mainte-
nance free and are based upon well proven defence
technology. The generator connects to the control
system via an IP67 rated plug and lead assembly to
enable easy secure connection and disconnection,
allowing a replacement cylinder assembly to be quick-
ly refitted into the system after discharge.
F ire Detection Metho d
Point detection is employed in each case. The units are
placed strategically to enable fast detection of a fire and
subsequent actuation of the fire suppression system. Proven
high reliability and quality.Spot Detector
The gas generator allows the system to remain at ZERO pressure until electrically
actuated enhancing operational efficiency and safety,
by removing the need to transport, store, handle and
maintain high pressure gas cylinders or cartridges. The
loss of pressure due to leakage of expellant gas is
effectively ruled out.
Suppression release control panels
There are two control panels available the NFS 3 is the more complex unit, it can
be configured to protect two areas and up to four suppression systems. Each of
these areas having a remote manual release The SOLO control panel is designed
for simplicity operating a single detection zone and having a single actuation
output. The panel incorporates a manual release facility. Each panel constantly
monitors detection and actuation circuits for faults and has 24hr
battery backup in case of mains power failure. Panels provide
signals to the main ships alarm if required and in every instance
should be interfaced to automatically shut down power to the
affected cooking appliance via inbuilt volt free contacts.
Every system requires an electrical control panel. The panelreceives a signal from the detection device and automatically actuates the dis-charge circuitry. A manual actuator call point to override automatic detection anddischarge the system is fitted to each system. The NFS 3 can have the manualrelease positioned remotely, The Solo panel has an integrated release.
