And from the Incarnate Word angle, the program needed a jump
start, quickly, and Burmeister with all his acquaintances and
friends in the business was a natural fit. In fact, the fit was so
snug, the coach and his family didn’t even have to move cities
considering he had been toiling away in the corporate world for
the past seven years, right here in San Antonio.
And at the announcement of his hiring, UIW Athletic Director
Mark Papich was effusive in his words about Coach Burmeister.
“When Ken’s name came into the mix,” Papich said, “we knew
that over the course of his career he had a proven record of
success in tough situations. And that was a key factor in our
selection process.”
Another factor cited by Papich was Burmeister’s way of doing
business. “He possesses an infectious, positive, energy level
which will be instrumental in his being successful with the UIW
basketball program. Ken’s connections and his contacts, his
network, is just outstanding which will allow him to go to work
immediately, without delay.”
And go to work he did, immediately. In collegiate basketball,
landing a job in May is way late in the crucial area of recruiting.
But not to worry, Cardinals fans. Coach Burmeister and his staff
hit the road and produced a group of seven new players, which,
after the fall training programs, caused the coach to go from ‘we’ll
have to wait and see’ to ‘I think we have a chance’.
And all the while, Coach Burmeister and his staff were running
summer camps, helping to coordinate a coach’s clinic on cam-
pus, arranging a playing schedule for the year and talking to busi-
ness community about financial support of the Cardinals.
Over the course of 30 years in collegiate basketball, Burmeister
has been a head coach at three schools. His first head job was
at the University of Texas / San Antonio where his four-year mark
was 72-44 and included one trip to the NCAA Division I National
Championships. That 1988 team finished 22-9 before losing to
Illinois in the first round.
Burmeister’s second head job was at Loyola of Chicago and gave
him the opportunity to relocate to his home territory of the upper
Midwest. Starting almost from scratch at Loyola, he moved his
teams from a measly five wins the first year to a break even
record in the fourth season.
After that, he coached one year as the interim at Trinity University
in San Antonio where his team went 16-9 and won two tourna-
ments during the season.
In addition to his head jobs, Burmeister has worked 14 years as a
collegiate assistant coach including stops at the University of
Texas / Arlington, University of Iowa, University of Arizona and
DePaul University. His efforts at those institutions were to be
benefit of a who’s who among basketball coaches including the
legendary Lute Olsen at both Iowa and Arizona and with the
fabled Myers family at DePaul.
While keeping his hand in basketball, Burmeister for the past six
years has worked in San Antonio as an account executive princi-
pally in the field of media and internet advertising.
The Twin Lakes, Wisc., native is a graduate of St. Mary’s
University and holds a master’s degree from Northern Arizona
University.
CCOOAACCHH KKEENN BBUURRMMEEIISSTTEERRThe winner of more than 100 basketball games at the colle-
giate level, Ken Burmeister has returned to the profession he
loves as the men’s head coach at the University of the
Incarnate Word.
Burmeister’s appoint-
ment was announced
the first week of May,
2006, and there were
smiles all around, on
both sides of the issue.
Burmeister revels in
coaching basketball
and that is something
he was not able to do
for the last few years. However he never quit talking the
game, he never lost his myriad of hoops contacts, and he not
once ceased attending games, seminars and clinics. This is
his passion.

GGRRAADDUUAATTEE AASSSSIISSTTAANNTTAfter a year’s hiatus, Prince Johnson has
returned to work with
the Cardinals men’s
basketball program
while he finishes up
his master’s degree at
UIW.
Previously, he had put
in four seasons as a
member of the staff at
Incarnate Word. Prior
to that he had com-
pleted his bachelor’s degree in education
in the summer of 2001.
A native of Lexington, Ky., Johnson played
two years with Incarnate Word finishing his
eligibility in the spring of 2000. Over those
two campaigns, he started 47 of his 53
games. In 1999, his junior year, UIW
advanced to the Elite Eight of the NAIA
National Tournament. He shot an
astounding .667 from the field setting a
school record. That team was voted num-
ber one in the national.
He graduated from Lexington’s Tates
Creek High School and then played two
years at Texas’ Jacksonville Baptist JC. In
high school, he was named one of the top
five players in Kentucky and he was all-
state while playing for a championship
football team.
JJAAVVAASSSSEE KKEEAARRNNEEYY
GGRRAADDUUAATTEE AASSSSIISSTTAANNTTNow into his second year as a staff person
for Cardinals basketball, he continues to
gather knowledge and information from
the coaching side of Incarnate Word bas-
ketball after playing
her as an undergradu-
ate.
Javasse Kearney
came to UIW as an
unheralded freshman
and by his senior year
he was a starter in 25
of his 27 games
played averaging
nearly 30 minutes a night. Over his four
years with UIW, his teams posted a cumu-
lative mark of 77-33 including that 2002
trip to the NCAA D-II Midwest Regional
semi-finals.
A native of San Antonio and a product of
Cole High School, he earned his Incarnate
Word degree in physical education.
JJOONNAATTHHAANN CCOOOOKK
AASSSSIISSTTAANNTT CCOOAACCHH Jonathan Cook played three years at
Incarnate Word.
He learned the ins and
outs of how things
work at Incarnate
Word and in Division II
basketball and now he
is passing along that
information as a
Cardinals assistant
coach.
In his three years of playing, he was in 79
Incarnate Word games, and was a vital
part of the 2001-2002 team which
advanced to the Midwest Regional semi-
finals. Two of his three UIW teams won
20 or more games.
A product of Round Rock and a graduate
of Round Rock High School, his father
Chet Cook was his high school coach.
He spent his freshman year at Texas A&M
/ Corpus Christi before matriculating at
Incarnate Word. He holds a degree in
business management from Incarnate
Word and in and around his coaching
duties is working for a master's degree in
sports management.
SSAALL CCEERRVVAANNTTEESS
AATTHHLLEETTIICC TTRRAAIINNEERRSal Cervantes
received his bachelor’s
degree in athletic train-
ing from Incarnate
Word in the spring of
2006 and immediately
accepted a position as
a graduate assistant in
the UIW athletic train-
ing department while
working for his mas-
ter’s degree.
A native of San Antonio and a product of
Highlands High School, he is a member of
the National Athletic Training Association
(NATA). Twice at Incarnate Word, he
received the PACE Award (Peer
Assistance Clinical Excellence).
During his first tour as a graduate assis-
tant, he will work with the women’s soccer
team, men’s basketball and in the spring
with the track and field Cardinals.
During his time off, he is into music and
working out, and he says he can get excit-
ed about trips out of the city, and like all
athletic trainers, a weekend off to relax.

NNCCAAAA DDIIVVIISSIIOONN IIII HHEEAARRTTLLAANNDD CCOONNFFEERREENNCCEE 2288
It all began right here in San Antonio in
January of 1999.
The Heart of Texas Conference was in its
final year when, at the annual NCAA
national convention in the Alamo City, a
group of university presidents and athletic
administrators began discussions about
forming a new conference at the Division II
level. Incarnate Word was represented at
those talks which resulted in life being
given to what is now the Heartland
Conference.
In June of 1999, the announcement was
made and seven schools were committed
to the Heartland: Incarnate Word, St.
Edward's, Texas Wesleyan and St. Mary's
of the old Heart of Texas plus three
schools in Missouri--Drury, Rockhurst and
Lincoln.
In the summer of 2001, the makeup of the
league changed with the withdrawal of
Texas Wesleyan and the addition of Dallas
Baptist University and Oklahoma
Panhandle. After one year of competition,
Dallas Baptist withdrew taking the confer-
ence to seven members. However, in the
summer of 2004, Dallas Baptist rejoined
the league taking it back to eight mem-
bers.
Then, significant changes. With the arrival
of June, 2005, original members Drury
and Rockhurst departed. With a flourish,
the Heartland replaced those two with
Montana State / Billings and Western New
Mexico keeping the league at eight mem-
bers.
In the last year, the league has undergone
perhaps its most dramatic lineup change
since perhaps its inception back in 1999.
To begin, Western New Mexico departed
for other pastures to be replaced in the
summer of 2006 by the Texas twostep of
Texas / Permian Basin and Texas A&M
International. Both moved from the NAIA.
Then, in the summer of 2007, Montana
State / Billings will leave and incoming will
be Newman of Kansas. That will put the
Heartland at nine member schools.
The Heartland Conference is the newest
of the NCAA Division II conferences.
Currently, there are 24 conferences in
NCAA Division II, totaling more than 300
institutions in full or provisional status
across the nation.
In that first year, 1999-2000, championship
play was conducted in men's golf and
women's tennis only with the UIW
Cardinals capturing the tennis crown.
However, during that first year, the teams
were eligible for at-large berths in NCAA
D-II post-season competition and the
Cardinals were the first to earn a slot
when the women's soccer team hosted a
first-round game in San Antonio in
November of 1999.
Incarnate Word competes in 17 different
sports while the Heartland crowns champi-
ons in 10 of those 17.
In just six short years, Heartland schools
have produced eight national titles and
numerous appearances in championship
tournaments. The first NCAA Division II
championship to come the Heartland's
way was in baseball (St. Mary's, 2001).
The others are softball (St. Mary's, 2002),
men's swimming (Drury, 2003), women's
track and field (Lincoln, 2003, 2004,
2006), women's indoor track and field
(Lincoln 2004), and men’s track and field
(Lincoln 2006).
The league's constitution, in part, states
the goals to "encourage policies that make
intercollegiate athletics an integral part of
the total educational offerings at member
institutions"..."encourage sound academic
practices for and contribute to the total
physical, emotional, intellectual and spiri-
tual development of student-athletes"...and
"promote mutual trust in intercollegiate
relations between member institutions."
The Heartland Conference is headquar-
tered in Waco, Texas and Tony Stigliano
serves as its commissioner.

Since its founding more than 125 years ago, the University of the
Incarnate Word has become one of the leading Catholic, co-edu-
cational liberal arts universities in the Southwest. The University
is an out-
growth of the
original mis-
sion that
brought the
Sisters of
Charity of the
Incarnate
Word to San
Antonio in
1869.
Despite limit-
ed resources, the Sisters began their ministry of caring for the
sick and the establishment of Santa Rosa Hospital. Their work
grew naturally to encompass the care of homeless children and
education on all levels. When the final enrollment figures were
completed for 2003-2004, UIW had become the largest Catholic
four-year insititution in the State of Texas.
The University was chartered in 1881 by the State of Texas and
empowered to confer academic honors and degrees. Operated
first as a college for women, it became affiliated with the Texas
State Department of Education in 1918, was admitted to member-
ship in the Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools of the
Southern States the following year, and joined the Texas
Association of Colleges as a senior college in 1920. The
Graduate Studies Division was established in 1970.
Until 1957, Incarnate Word was governed by the General Council
of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate
Word. A new charter of
that year established
the College as a sepa-
rately incorporated
educational institution.
Male students were
first admitted into the
College’s undergradu-
ate programs in 1970.
TTHHEE MMIISSSSIIOONN
The definition and construction of Incarnate Word's framework is
ongoing. Three core values have been identified and will have a
focal significance for academic programs over the next decade.
As goals, these values are spirituality, globalization and technolo-
gy, and they reaffirm the University's commitment of academic
excellence throughout the world in a context of faith and service.
The University is located on a 200-acre site, formerly the estate
of noted San Antonio philanthropist and businessman Colonel
George W. Brackenridge. His villa, listed on the National Register
of Historic Places, still stands on the campus. The southern por-
tion of the original Brackenridge estate joins the University along
Hildebrand Avenue, forming Brackenridge Park.
The headwaters of the San Antonio River begin on the campus,
and have provided fascinating archaeological finds related to
native Americans and the Conquistadors, and to more recent
attempts at settlement. The river separates the main campus
from the newly developed recreation and athletic complex.
AATTHHLLEETTIICC FFAACCIILLIITTIIEESS
The athletic complex, dedicated in the fall of 1987, includes the
Clarence Mabry Center of eight tennis courts (four lighted for
night play), three soccer fields (one lighted for night play), a light-
ed softball field, the Dan Sullivan Baseball Field (also lighted for
night play), and a newly refurbished quarter mile track with the
requisite jumping pits and
throwing areas. The Alice P.
McDermott Convocation
Center (1988) is a profession-
ally-sized and fully equipped
facility to accommodate 2,000
spectators at athletic events.
The former varsity gymnasium
has been fully renovated into
the University’s Wellness
Center (1991). In October of
2001 the University dedicated
the sparkling Ann Barshop
Natatorium which is designed
to host both national and inter-
national meets.
TTHHEE DDEEGGRREEEESS
At the baccalaureate level, the
College of Humanities, Arts
and Social Sciences offers degree plans in 10 study areas while
the School of Business and Applied Arts and Sciences confers
bachelor's degree. Plus, students can earn bachelor's degrees in
the School of Education or the School of Nursing and Health
Professions. The School of Science, Mathematics and
Engineering grants degrees in five areas of study.
At the graduate level, Incarnate Word has programs leading to an
M.A., M.A.A., M.B.A., M.ED., M.S., and M.S.N. And, as a cap-
stone, UIW confers the doctoral of philosophy degree in educa-
tion with concentrations in organizational leadership, institutional
education and entrepreneurship or mathematics education.
OONN--LLIINNEE UUNNIIVVEERRSSIITTYY
In the fall of 2000 laptop computers and campuswide wireless
accessibilities came to Incarnate Word. Now, no University stu-
dent is limited to a classroom or the library. All have a laptop and
a wireless card to give them access to resources no matter their
location. An auditorium full of students can be on-line as can a
single student sitting under a shade tree. This is a traditional
University giving its students the opportunity to study in non-tradi-
tional ways.
SSTTUUDDYY AABBRROOAADD
Incarnate Word enjoys special cooperative agreements with more
than 20 sister colleges and universities in Asia-Pacific nations,
Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Europe.
Information regarding international exchange and study programs
is available through the Office of International Academic
Programs.

Prior to the summer of 2001 and
becoming head of Incarnate Word's
17-sport athletic department (syn-
chronized swimming and women's
swimming were added with his lead-
ership), the 47-year-old Mark Papich
was involved with the Cardinals vol-
leyball team as head coach. He con-
tinues as director of the campus
Wellness Center, and of the Ann
Barshop Natatorium.
In talking with the New Kensington, Pa., native, be prepared for
the conversation to include tidbits about upgrading athletic facili-
ties, about usage of those facilities, about recruiting, camps, the
funding of all teams, about eligibility of athletes, and on and on
and on.
And, in the spring of 2004, he was a point person is the imple-
mentation of changing the Incarnate Word mascot from
Crusaders to Cardinals, a process which is on-going.
In fact, it was volleyball which brought him to UIW in the fall of
1995 as the team's assistant coach.
In 1996 as the interim coach, Papich saw his Cardinals win 20
matches for the first time in four years. Then came 1997 and all
kinds of excitement as Incarnate Word won a school record 31
matches and tied for the old Heart of Texas Conference title. But
that was only the cake. The icing was winning the NAIA
Southwest Regional tournament and advancing to the national
championships for the first time ever.
Following that season, the American Volleyball Coaches
Association named Papich the Tachikara Region Coach of the
Year. That honor from his fellow coaches came on top of his
being named NAIA Southwest Region Coach of the Year as well
as the Heart of Texas Conference Coach of the Year. That made
him the most decorated Cardinals volleyball coach ever for a
year.
His cumulative mark at Incarnate Word is 124-124 which makes
him the winningest volleyball coach ever at UIW.
A member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association,
Papich holds a bachelor of science degree in industrial design
from the University of Cincinnati. While an undergraduate he
played baseball and lacrosse.

CCOONNVVOOCCAATTIIOONN CCEENNTTEERRIs there a homecourt advantage in collegiate basketball? At the
University of the Incarnate Word? Let's check the numbers.
The Alice P. McDermott Convocation Center opened on the UIW campus
in the fall of 1989. Since that time, the Cardinals have played 248 games
in the building named for the late Alice McDermott, a longtime supporter
of education in San Antonio and South Texas.
Of those 248 games, the Cardinals have won 189 (62 losses) for a suc-
cessful percentage of .762. Cardinals opponents over the years must
decide if Incarnate Word has a homecourt advantage.
In terms of winning strings in the McDermott Center, they are multiple.
The most significant of those began January 17, 1998, when the
Cardinals defeated
St. Edward's by 85-
60. That was the
first of 16 straight
homecourt victories,
a string which
ended on January
20, 1999, in a 63-62
loss to Texas
Wesleyan.
Opponents must
have known some-
thing was in the making when the building was opened in mid-November
of 1989 and Incarnate Word won the first three games played there.
Concordia Lutheran out of Austin was the first team to visit the facility and
the Tornados dropped a 86-64 decision to UIW.
A focal point for the University's athletic complex, the building will seat
2,000 spectators for basketball and volleyball, including four rows of the-
ater-style chair seats. There is office space for the men's and women's
basketball coaches and the volleyball coach as well as work space for
their complete staffs.
On the west end of the Center, there are four locker rooms, a training
room, and a fully-equipped weight training room.
The main entrance to the facility includes a permanent concession stand
surrounded by trophy cases to house the multiple awards accrued by the
Cardinals over the years.
Upstairs, the Gorman-Mitchell Room is a comfortable setting to accommo-
date up to 200 persons for meetings. With its own kitchen facilities, this
room has a balcony which overlooks the campus to the east, just across
the headwaters of the San Antonio River. And, the room has a wall made
almost entirely of glass which overlooks the playing court.
Over the years, the 27,000-foot building has welcomed events as part of
the XXIII AAU Junior Olympics, the United States Olympic Festival, plus
dozens of other events in the sporting world. Recently, the McDermott
Center has served as the practice facility for the 1999 and 2003 world
champion San Antonio Spurs basketball team. Plus, San Antonio's entry
in the WNBA, the Silver Stars, have conducted training camps here.
Hanging on the south wall are the banners detailing exactly how well the
Cardinals have done over the years including their records and their trips
to the national tournament. And if that weren't enough, the women
Cardinals basketball team recently has hung banners outlining their suc-
cesses and adding to the concept of homecourt advantage.
TTRRAAIINNIINNGG RROOOOMMStudent-athletes from the "indoor" sports--volleyball and basketball--in the fall of
2002--for the first time had full access to the original campus training facilities in the
Alice P. McDermott Convocation Center.
Sounds like a big deal? Well, it is. Until that time the original training room was
shared by student-athletes from 17 different teams. With the opening of the "out-
door" teams' training facility in the new Ann Barshop Natatorium, the space in the
McDermott Center now is exclusively occupied by volleyball and basketball.
With approximately 600 square feet of space, this room has a wet area with two
whirlpools and an industrial-sized ice machine. There is a complete rehabilitation
area for injured athletes which contains exercise equipment such as an eliptical
machine and stationary bicycles. There also is a trampoline, air balls, and a
Theraband.
There are two taping tables, six treatment tables, a hydroculator, and an e-stem
machine. There also are two ultra-sound units.
There is a first aid center and office and storage space for the training staff. Then,
inside the the storage area is an industrial strength washer and dryer set.
And since the training staff will also operate and maintain the training room in the
Barshop Natatorium the two facilities will be networked with Sportsware 2002, an
injury-tracking software package. Plus, they will have internet access.
TTHHEE WWEELLLLNNEESSSS CCEENNTTEERRThe UIW Wellness Center on campus is a facility designed to accommo-
date the physical well-being needs of not only the Incarnate Word family
of students, staff, faculty and administration, but also the community sur-
rounding the University.
Formerly the University's varsity gymnasium, the Wellness Center was
completely refurbished for the first time in the late 1980's when the Alice
P. McDermott Center opened for business. At that time the Wellness
Center was re-directed into an area for physical fitness for all.
The facility has undergone numerous updates in the years since including
a new floor for the gymnasium portion of the building. The gymnasium
itself includes six baskets for play, adjacent locker rooms, a hot tub and
sauna, and racquetball courts.
Additionally, the aerobics room (classes are offered seven days a week)
includes Woodway and Trotter treadmills, a Stairmaster Crossrobic
Trainer, True recumbent and upright Lifecycles, and Sci-Fit Steppers.
Also, the area includes PreCor and True elliptical trainers and Stairmaster
Stepmills.
UIW student-athletes always have special interests for the weight training
area. Here the Center offers Jade free weight plates, Icarian weight
machines along with the usual accouterments such as mirrored walls,
weight scales and televisions.
OOTTHHEERR FFAACCIILLIITTIIEESSThe Ann Barshop Natatorium on campus has an indoor pool which means
swimming is accessible year round to UIW student-athletes.
The Mabry Tennis Center at the heart of the UIW campus has eight hard-
surface courts for year round play and four of the courts are lighted for
night play.
Adjacent to the McDermott Center is a regulation, eight-lane track with all
the necessary pit areas for jumping and throwing events. The track sur-
rounds Cardinals Field for soccer which is lighted for night play.
The Athletic Complex also includes the Sullivan Field for Baseball and
Cardinals Field for softball. Both are lighted for night play.
And nearby Sullivan Field for baseball, there are two additional soccer
fields for training and tournament play.

Antonio itself is a one hour drive time from the magnificent Texas Hill Country, just two
hours from the United States-Mexico border, and two hours from the Texas Gulf Coast.
