Mεταφρασιμότητα, συμβολισμός, γνωσιακός δυισμός Labels: ανθρωπολογία Tο να καταλαβαίνεις τη μορφή και τη συνθήκη της μύχιας ζωής των ιθαγενών, για να χρησιμοποιήσω ακόμη μια φορά την επικίνδυνη λέξη, μοιάζει μάλλον με το να συλλαμβάνεις το νόημα μιας παροιμίας, με το να πιάνεις έναν υπαινιγμό, με το να κατανοείς ένα καλαμπούρι –ή, όπως το υπέδειξα, με το να διαβάζεις ένα ποίημα– και όλο αυτό δεν σημαίνει ότι μπορείς να γίνεις κοινωνός της. Marcel Proust, À la recherche du temps perdu (2) Στη δύση της εποχής του μοντερνισμού ο ανθρωπολόγος δεν είναι πια «ήρωας»: μερικοί υποστηρίζουν ότι το μόνο που του απομένει είναι το άχαρο έργο του σχολιασμού των ιδρυτικών της «επιστήμης» κειμένων. Άλλοι πάλι επιμένουν να πάρουν πάλι τον δρόμο από την αρχή, παραμένοντας ιδανικοί εραστές της εθνογραφικής σύμβασης. O Geertz, δυο δεκαετίες πριν, το έχει πει: στη χώρα των τυφλών ο μονόφθαλμος δεν είναι πια βασιλιάς, είναι θεατής. Tο πρόβλημα της «μεταφρασιμότητας» του εθνογραφικού δεδομένου φαντάζει σήμερα μάλλον ξεπερασμένο, όχι γιατί δόθηκε κάποια τελεσίδικη απάντηση, αλλά γιατί ένας ορισμένος «μεταμοντερνισμός» διατείνεται ότι το εθνογραφικό «δεδομένο» έχει καταστεί ριζικά αδιαφανές, ότι η εμπειρική προσπέλασή του επικαθορίζεται σε τέτοιο βαθμό από την ερμηνευτική προβολή (3) ώστε η αναζήτηση της αλήθειας του ισοδυναμεί με χίμαιρα. Αν στην περίπτωση Malinowski το πρόβλημα τίθεται με όρους μύχιου ηθικού διλήμματος (4), απασχολεί έντονα την βρετανική ανθρωπολογία των μέσων του αιώνα, όπου ο όρος «μετάφραση της κουλτούρας» τείνει να γίνει συνώνυμος του έργου του ανθρωπολόγου.
