To all the children baptized on May 10th 2015, in the name of the Father and of the
Son and of the Holy Spirit.
My dear Parishioners,
As we join other Christians in celebrating the Ascension of
Our Lord into heaven, we receive the news released this
past Tuesday by the Pew Research Center that the number
of Christians in the United States, Catholics included, is
shrinking. Just when we hear Jesus commanding us to “Go
into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every crea-
ture” (Mark 16: 15), we are being told by our demographic researchers that our numbers are diminishing. While
Christianity is still a major religious reality in this country,
it continues to experience drainage. According to Religious
News Service, within Christian circles, “only black
Protestant churches have held a steady grip through the
years of change.” Quite a significant statement, don’t you
agree? When one asks “why?”, the quick and easy answer
may be because of the music and the preaching. Perhaps,
but only to a certain extent. There is something deeper; and
I believe it is a strong personal relationship on the part of
individual church members with Jesus Christ. The great
music and preaching flow from this. Of course, there are
exceptions, and some church goers are preacher groupies.
But, in the last analysis, it is that intimate relationship with
the Lord Jesus that gives substance to the life of the Chris-
tian.
If our Christian churches are losing members, very likely it
is do to the fact that the individuals who are no longer with
us have lost or never developed a personal relationship with
Jesus. What to do? First of all, we who remain have to
look within, and if we are not happy with what we see, we
have to make every effort to reclaim our relationship with
Christ. Secondly, we have to call a halt to self-seeking and
welcome opportunities for self-sacrifice. Putting others first
will always require self-sacrifice, but it is an excellent way
to evangelize—to do what Jesus commanded us to do be-
fore his ascension. Staying or leaving the Christian commu-
nity is all about relationships, about bonding or breaking —
ultimately, with Jesus Christ. — Fr. Jerome, C.P.

est e t est imon io d e vida e l qu e no s llama J esús a
vivir. Así, seremos sus testigos vivos y creibles.
