History

• March 2011 – Utah State Legislature appropriates $2.5 M for development of 6 technology-intensive concurrent enrollment (TICE) courses

• May 2011 – Decision to create hybrid courses that satisfy General Education requirements at Utah colleges

• June 2011 – 6 teams of faculty and high school teachers start course development activities

• January 2012 – Demo sites for 2 courses shared publicly at http://www.uen.org/concurrent

• Fall 2012 – Pilot course offerings• Spring 2013 – Full course rollout

Project Goals

• Increase access to concurrent enrollment courses by creating high-quality open course materials

• Increase college preparation by keeping students engaged in courses during the senior year of high school

• Focus attention on satisfying General Education requirements for bachelors and associates degrees

• Ensure high quality through assessment of core learning outcomes

• Strengthen the extensive course articulation and transfer system that exists in Utah higher education

The Courses

• ART 1010 – Intro to Visual Arts• CHEM 1110 – Intro to Chemistry• ENGL 1010 – Intro to Writing• MATH 1010 – Intermediate Algebra• MATH 1030 – Mathematical Decision-Making• PSY 1010 – Intro to Psychology• All course materials are made available to Utah colleges

and high schools through the Instructure Canvas LMS

MATH 1030 Goals

• Keep students engaged in math through the senior year of high school (after fulfilling HS graduation requirements)

• Provide an opportunity for students headed to non-technical degrees to satisfy General Education math requirements while still in high school

• Teach mathematical decision-making skills for life

Demo Courses

• www.uen.org/concurrent has much more information on each course, including team members, desired outcomes, syllabi, etc.

• UEN currently has links to copies of three courses: ENGL 1010, ART 1010 and MATH 1030.

Open Education

• In public high schools, districts pay the cost of instructional materials (e.g., textbooks)

• For TICE courses, it is important to use open education materials to reduce or eliminate costs to students

Open Education

• ART 1010 – Mashup using SmartHistory videos from the Khan Academy

• CHEM 1110 – Original research-based instructional materials and quizzes

• ENGL 1010 – Textbook with readings plus Mashup using videos and readings from many sources

• MATH 1010 – NROC Math OER materials• MATH 1030 – Original video tutorials• PSY 1010 – Textbook plus original lesson plans, media,

and a compendium of web-resources

Roll Out

• Pilot 3-4 sections of each course in Fall 2012• Increase size substantially by Spring 2013• Process will be very similar to existing concurrent

enrollment – high schools will partner/contract with concurrent directors at each higher ed institution.
