The Sacred Canyon

In northern Arizona, on Navajo Indian land, a narrow canyon winds its’ way to Lake Powell on the Colorado River. Called Antelope Canyon in English, the Navajo name means “place where water runs through rock. ”

Millions of years of wind and annual flash floods have carved narrow slots that meander through the solid sandstone. Water, as an artist, used its’ power gracefully to create this magnificent sculpted enclosure.

Entering this magical space, we were surrounded by flowing waves, turbulences, and elegantly curving lines and patterns, all in solid red stone. Sunlight move through the spaces, creating the illusion of flashes of flame.

Gabriel, our Navajo guide, played ancient native melodies on his wooden flute as columns of sunlight shown from above. As the music echoed through the narrow canyon, we felt that this is truly a sacred place.
