Inthisfirstweek,thebasicpremiseoftheclassispresented,namely,theideathatKierkegaardusedSocratesashismodel.ThelecturebeginsbytakingabrieflookatKierkegaardsearlylife:hisfamilybackgroundandhiseducationattheSchoolofCivicVirtueinCopenhagen.WethenturntoTheConceptofIronyandtounderstanditsstructureandargumentativestrategy.SinceKierkegaardseeshimselfasfulfillingaSocratictask,itisimportanttogainsomeinsightintothethoughtofSocratesinordertodetermineexactlywhatitisthatthismeans.SothisweekslessonlooksbrieflyatacoupleofPlatosdialogues,EuthyphroandTheApology,whichKierkegaardstudiedcarefully.AftereachanalysisabriefaccountofKierkegaardsuseorappropriationofthegivenideaissketched.
