Presentation is about

• Problem statement• Related statistic• Solution we have created • Description of the PoK project

• Assumptions • Logic • Structure • Elements involved• Incentives• Future

• Challenges

Problem statement• It is a simple reality that most developing

countries do not have basic local data about where schools or hospitals are located.

Analysis of Kenya datasetsPrimary School Health Facility

Total number 31229 8232

What do you think?

• How many locations of Health facilities of official Kenya dataset exactly match satellite images?

21.6 %

• How many locations of Primary Schools of official Kenya dataset exactly match satellite images?

Assumption of solution• We could use wisdom of crowd to correct

existing datasets.

Points of Knowledge tool• The basic idea is to incentivize users to verify

data points on based on satellite images and if wrong, move them to another place.

Logic of PoK

• If multiple users move the same point to an approximately same new location the tool calculates a new consensus location.

Elements involved

IncentivesUsing elements of Gamification:– Honor Board with highlighted contributors:• Last registered• Most active• Best contributor……

– Measure global progress over time– Clear goals, possible to achieve

Future of the tool

• Support of polylines and polygons• Multi-language interface• Allow picture-uploading• GPS position collection using mobile device• Community built on Points of Knowledge• Users communications

Challenge 1

• What is the best country to deploy this tool?

• Could we create a tool to search publicly available authoritative datasets?

Challenge 2

• What data exist and what is an accuracy of this data?

• Could we create a tool/methodology for automatic evaluation of available datasets locally and around the world?

Conclusion

• The PoK tool was created to solve a problem of a lack of basic data on social infrastructure.

Questions to you: • Could we create a tool to search publicly

available authoritative datasets? • Could we create a tool/methodology for

automatic evaluation of available datasets locally and around the world?

Thank you!
