【Course Objectives and Focus : 授業の到達目標及びテーマ】
In this course we will be reading novels from the mid-20th century, written by selected Japanese
authors like Mishima, Kawabata, Dazai Osamu, and perhaps Abe Kobo.
【Course Summary : 授業の概要】
We will read the works and see how they operate intrinsically, especially in terms of dominant
themes and images, and also read them in terms of how they reflect the culture of the time. In
regards to this second point, during this period of time the Japanese culture was under extreme
stress from the double whammy of the abrupt forced transition into an industrialized and
modernized society, as well as undergoing the tremendous political upheaval of democratization that
included the occupation by a foreign army after the loss of WWII. The struggle for identity is thus
one of the focal issues of many of the writers of that time and continues to drive many of the works
today.
【 Preparatory Work : 準備学習等についての具体的な指示】

【Course Objectives and Focus : 授業の到達目標及びテーマ】
We will be covering an ambitious selection of works, ranging from classics of the Heian Period to modern
bestsellers, including not only poetry and prose, but manga, as well.
【Course Summary : 授業の概要】
In this course, students will be given a relatively free hand to chose which authors and works they will read and
then introduce in subsequent classes. In addition, we will attempt to survey 1000 years of Japanese literature,
beginning with excerpts from what is called the world‟s first modern novel, The Tale of Genji, which was written
in the early 11th Century by Murasaki Shikibu (c.973-c.1031). The Pillow Book, completed in 1002, is a short
collection of observations on the happenings within the court also during the Heian Period (794-1185) by the court
lady Sei Shonagon (c.966-c.1025). We will then take a look at haiku by some of the more famous poets of the
genre, Matsuo Basho (1644-1694) and Issa (1763-1827). Moving on to Japan‟s modern era, we will sample works
by Natsume Soseki (1867-1916), such as I am a Cat. Published between 1905 and 1906, it offers a satirical look at
Japanese society during the Meiji Period (1868–1912). Akutagawa Ryunosuke (1892-1927) was a prolific writer of
the Taisho era (1912-1926). Regarded as the father of the Japanese short story, Akutagawa‟s name lives on today
in the Akutagawa Prize, which is awarded twice a year to the best story published by a new or rising author. In
Praise of Shadows (1933) is an essay on the aesthetics of Japan in contrast with Western cultures by novelist
Tanizaki Junichiro (1886-1965). Post-war authors will include many of the so-called Third Generation writers,
such as Endo Shusaku (1923-1996) and Yoshiyuki Junnosuke (1924-1994), as well as others who came later, such
as Abe Kobo (1924-1993) and Oe Kenzaburo (1935). Murakami Haruki (1949), it goes without saying, is Japan‟s
most famous author today and believed by some to be in contention for the Nobel Prize. Finally, we will look at
both manga and short stories by a number of rising stars in the Japanese literary world, including Kawakami
Mieko (1976).
【 Preparatory Work : 準備学習等についての具体的な指示】
Students will be free to choose the works they are interested in reading, but will be required to introduce a minimum of

【Course Objectives and Focus : 授業の到達目標及びテーマ】
This course is aimed to understand contemporary Japanese economy. Japan has achieved great economic
performance after the devastation of the World War II. We will analyze how post-war Japan has made its
economy as known and how pre-war modernization policies introduced by pre-war government. Despite its
past excellence, in fact, recent Japan has suffered from the long stagnation, called “lost decades” since the
crash of bubbling economy in 1990s. The sequence of the failures in dealing with the huge drop in Japanese
economy and accommodating itself to the globalization have revealed serious social instability, such as youth
unemployment and lack of social safety net, due the special historical development of Japanese social
institution. We will discuss the recent social and economic issues and problems of Japan and the possible
path for further development.
