Why Study Doctrine?1

Major Christian Doctrine

We sometimes deal more with the results of the doctrine than the actual

doctrine itself.

Why Study Doctrine…?

1.Jesus commanded it.(Matthew 28:19)

teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”- Matthew 28:20

Why Study Doctrine…?

2.Much False Teaching(Romans 16:17)

For such men are slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of their own appetites; and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting.

- Romans 16:18

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires,- II Timothy 4:3

But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness, and their talk will spread like

gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,- II Timothy 2:16-17

men who have gone astray from the truth saying that the resurrection has already taken place, and they upset the faith of some.- II Timothy 2:18

Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.- Acts 20:28

I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock;

- Acts 20:29

and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.

- Acts 20:30

He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.

- John 12:48

Why Study Doctrine…?

3. False doctrine causes problems.A. It divides – I Timothy 6:3

If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness,

he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a morbid interest in controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions,

- I Timothy 6:4

and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.- I Timothy 6:5

Why Study Doctrine…?

3. False doctrine causes problems.

A. It divides

B.It makes us prisoners of false ideas.

But it was because of the false brethren secretly brought in, who had sneaked in to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to bring us into bondage.

- Galatians 2:4

See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.- Colossians 2:8

For among them are those who enter into households and captivate weak women weighed down with sins, led on by various impulses, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.- II Timothy 3:6-7
