INTEGRITY MANAGEMENT UNDER GEOHAZARD CONDITIONS
Pipelines design and construction consider industry standards that normally contemplate operation loads but not
necessarily analyses mechanical behavior due to geohazards

DEFECTS IDENTIFIED ON IN-LINE INSPECTION (ILI)
ILI Detectable Dimensions of thickness loss
Source: API 1163 (2013). In-line Inspection Systems Qualification.
Second Edition, April 2013
A wide range of technologies are currently offered, which allow identify
anomalies generated by pipeline threats described on ASME or API
standards.
Techniques most used are those with Magnetic Flux Leakage sensors
(MFL) which allow to evaluate anomalies of thickness loss.
In the last years the ultrasonic testing (UT) techniques have been
developed and included on ILI programs:
• Straight Ultrasound beam used to measure wall thickness
• Angular Ultrasound beam allows crack detection
• Electro Magnetic Acoustic Transducer (EMAT) capable of identifying
zones with adhesion loss of coating or used to crack detection.

GIRTH WELD PERFORMANCE
Compliance of API 1104 standard brings acceptance and rejection criteria for
phases of welding and quality control using inspections with non-destructive tests
(VT, UT, MT, PT and RT) and allows to coexist with anomalies like lack of fusion, lack
of penetration, porosities, undercut, among others, with an established limit.
STRESS CORROSION CRACKING (SCC)
Variables according to the NACE standards that generate (SCC): Corrosive
environment, Material susceptibility and Stress applied
Geohazards are related with applied loads that generate membrane stresses
that intensify in interaction with a stress concentrator.

PIPELINE BEHAVIOUR
CONCLUDING REMARKS
An adequate pipeline integrity management under geohazards conditions requires hazard and vulnerability analysis complemented with inspection and monitoring of the pipeline behavior to establishes risk management and assessment plans.
