P5 platform: smart lighting enables energy
saving and new smart city applications
www.algorab.com COMMERCIAL IN CONFIDENCE
What is P5?
P5 is a platform that uses wireless data connection for connecting street lamps in a mesh network (a Wireless Sensor Network, WSN).
This platform aims to:
1. Improve energy efficiency of street lighting
2. Enable new smart city applications

Why streetlights are perfect to build a pervasive urban wireless network?
P5 PLATFORM
6
1. The problems related to visual and architectural impact are avoided by safely embedding the wireless devices in the frame of the light poles, in case with a compact antenna sticking out from the structure of the streetlamps;
2. The elevation of the light poles structure from the ground offers:
• Efficient wireless communications
• Protection from theft and vandalism
3. Streetlights poles intrinsically provide a suitable spot to get power for the wireless nodes
4. Streetlights are ideal to pervasively cover the urban environment using short-range wireless telecommunications
www.algorab.com COMMERCIAL IN CONFIDENCE
Why a wireless network?
P5 PLATFORM
7
Leaving aside smart city applications (that willbe discussed later) :
• P5 wireless network exploits radio channelfor communications
• Unlike powerline technology, the performance of P5 wireless infrastructureis not affected by poor quality of streetlights power supply network (cablingtechnology, load quality etc).

P5-SLC working modes
Normal mode
• P5-SLC receives instructions from control centre and manages the lamp
• P5-SL is also capable to work according to rules like:
 Time slots
Typical luminosity (calculated on astronomical clock
basis)
 Available luminosity sensors

P5-SLC working modes
Manual mode
• This mode allows to control a single lamp (or a single group of lamps)
• Manual mode may be useful for maintenance purposes or to control light intensity during events (e.g., cultural activities) or road accidents.

Standalone mode
A specific planning is stored locally, therefore every node can also perform in standalone mode.
• The nodes works without connection with the remote platform
• Standalone mode guarantee the SL service even in case of system or network failures

9) «Certificati bianchi»: a brief summary
P5 PLATFORM
30
What are the «certificati bianchi» or TEE?
They are «energy efficiency bonds» (TEE) that certify the energy saving
Who can get them?
Those implementing energy efficiency interventions according to some defined rules. The reduction of the energy consumption is included in this mechanism!
How does it work?
The bonds are obtained according to the tonne of oil equivalent (toe) saved.
For electric consumptions:
1 toe = 5.347,59 kWh (1 kWh = 0,187x10-3 toe)
Each toe allows one to get a «certificato bianco» that can be sold in the energy market.
www.algorab.com COMMERCIAL IN CONFIDENCE
9) «Certificati bianchi»: a brief summary
P5 PLATFORM
31
What are they worth?
The bonds have a variable rate (today, between 80 and 100 Euro)
Who buys them?
1. Those obliged by law to get energy efficiency objectives (that is to produce a certain number of «certificati bianchi»)
2. If they do not get specific results, they must buy the missing bonds on the market

P5 is suitable to manage a high number of nodes. Ideal for city sensing!
P5 exploits low power consumption technologies (battery operated devices), and gas and water meters will adopt this kind of power supply. P5 antennas are available near meters: only low tx power is required. Batteries will last longer!

2. User friendly: bikes are visible and ready to use (according to the available led)
3. Thanks to GPS, taking and giving back «is free» (not necessarily bounded to dedicated collection points*)
4. Maximum fares configurability (first half-hour free, forfeit, effective use, slots with different fares, facilitation for public transportation subscribers, company agreements ecc.)
5. Maps available via online web portal with real time information about bikes position
* Details about check-out varies city-to-city. In some cities the bikes can be left near crossroad, in other cities users must go to a dedicated collection point.

1. GPS and GPRS modem imply not negligible energy consumptions when data are synchronized with the control centerP5 is a low power technology oriented to energy saving!
LESS CONSUMPTIONS, LESS MAINTENANCE!
2. Communications between bikes and control center use cellular network = costsP5 already available for data transmission!

1. The user requests the check-out pushing the suitable button and waits.
2. The lock activates only if the device is in an area covered by the P5 network!

The public transportation system integrates with the bike sharing (eg. Availability of bikes near bus station signaled on board)
Irrigation of the public green defined according to the overall water demand
