Handling Difficult PeopleEky Sri Handayani
Difficult people can range from mildly irritating to the totally impossible to deal with.
Typical Types
• Clinging, need to be taken care of constantly.• Controlling, have to be right all the time. Their
desire to critize is endless. • Competitive, have to win all the time. They
won’t stop until they win.
Difficult People at Work
• Talk constantly and never listen (clinging type).
• Fail to keep commitments (clinging type). • Must always have the last word (competitive
type). • Criticize anything that they did not create
(controlling). Is that you?
How to handle them
• Clinging type, give them more responsibilities, instead of helping them to do the task, show them how to do it all by themselves. Leave them alone.
• Controlling, be strong and stand up for yourself. Show them you can do good jobs. Don’t be intimidated.
• Competitive, let them win and they will stop being competitive and being generous instead.
• Do you have your own tricks to handle impossible people?
One on one with an agresive person
1. Keep your cool – count to 102. Fly like an eagle – you can’t fly like an eagle if you hang
out with turkeys3. Shift from being reactive to pro active – put ourselves in
the difficult individual’s shoes4. Pick your battles - fight the battles that are truly worth
fighting or stay away5. Separate the person from the issue – soft on the person
but strong on the issue6. Be opposite of them and master the art of
communication
