Esitykseni rakenne ja tavoite
• Tarkastelen projektikokemusteni valossa, miten amk:n kielenopetuksessa näemme kulttuurin opetuksen ja oppimisen
• Tavoite: verrata, problematisoida ja kyseenalaistaakin kokemuksia ja käsityksiä amk-kentältä
3
Kulttuuri ennen ja tänään• ”Perinteinen” ammatillisesti suuntautunut kielen ja
viestinnän opetus – Opetettiin (etukäteen) selviämistä kulttuurieroista tietämisen ja
kertomisen kautta (oppikirjat yms materiaali, tarinat) – vrt. peli, pelaaminen ja pelin käyttöohje
– Kulttuurienvälinen viestintä ja joukko muita käsitteitä vakiintui vähitellen kielenopettajien piirissä (ks. Korhonen 2002), vastaavat sisällöt ja menetelmät tuskin ollenkaan
• Amk-kieliopintojen tavoitteet, sisällöt ja arviointi valtaosin kielestä, hyvin vähän kulttuurista– Keskeiset ohjediskurssit (esim EVK ja suomalaiset
käytäntösuositukset) kiinnittävät suhteellisen vähän huomiota kulttuuriin (vrt. Risager 2007)
– Instrumentaaliset päämäärät hallitsevat (vrt. Bologna-prosessin dokumentit)
– Oppiaineryhmän sisällä ja toimijoiden piirissä suuriakin eroja
4
keskeinen pulma
• Näkökulmat: – erilaisten perusvajeiden näkeminen (deficit) ja keskisyys vs
moninaisuus, suhteuttaminen ja periferioiden huomioiminen;– haasteet: hankala ongelma vs rikkaus, rikastuttava kokemus
• Perusongelma: luonnollinen, kokonaisuutta tavoittamaton asenne – Kuitenkin esim. Timonen (2011) tavoittanut hyvin eri
(merkityksenantojen) näkökulmat kansainvälisyys- ja kulttuuriosaamisessa
5
kiinnittyminen
• Ammatillisen oppimiseni kannalta keskeisiä:– ulkomaalaisopiskelijoiden integraatioon ja
pedagogiseen kohtaamiseen liittyvät kielikuvat

Kulttuuriprojekti GLG
• Getting Local and Global-opintojakso luo kehyksen opiskelijoiden interkulttuuriselle oppimiselle ja kasvulle
8
Kurssin alussa kartoitetaan oppimistarpeet

About GLG methodology
• The students conduct dialogue and reflection to increase their awareness about intercultural encounters
• The students make portfolios to support their intercultural learning and to make it possible for the instructors to monitor and guide the learning processes
• The students keep record and reflect on what they learned through the activity or event, to connect what they encountered in the activity or event to their own previous experiences and knowledge
• We have “house rules” and code of conduct

KE-LeGE intends to increase competencies for practitioners of global education in Korea and EU countries.
The main principles of this proposal are from the framework of 21st-century skills (Cisco, 2010):
Ways of thinking
Ways of working
Tools for working
Living in the world
-Creativity and innovation-Critical thinking, problem solving, decision making-Learning to learn, metacognition
-Communication-Collaboration team work
-Information literacy-Information and Communication technology (ICT) literacy
-Citizenship – local & global-Life and career-Personal and social responsibility-including cultural awareness and competence

First student exchange period Fall 2011
Lessons Learned
altogether 25 students:15 from Korea to EU10 from EU to Korea
Dr. Irja Leppisaari
Prof. Okhwa Lee
based on student interviews, exchange student survey
Experiences of the first exchange period (Fall 2011) have overall been quite positive.

How students felt at the beginning of fall…
• When I arrived here, I had a little bit afraid about people. Because I can't speak in Germany any more and my English was also not good. However it took short time to realized that it doesn't matter. They are friendly and cool. I could ask anybody anything. And there are many students who come from many country in here. So I could learn variety culture from them and also let them know ours, especially food! After coming here, I can think more positive and more various points of view. But I missed my country and I sometimes felt alone. Whenever I did, I just chatted with many friend whom I met in here. The most important thing what I learn here is 'Don't be afraid'. Have confidence in your choice and just do it!

Our Authentic Learning class!!This is so different about our korean university class. it is like a blended learning! It is little bit hard to take part in, but I can learn in on, off-line both and get a feedback from teachers and co-students (also, collaboration). I am really happy about that:) I am sure that this will be really self-rewarding study for me!
24
Experiences from the practicum (examples)
• ”Teacher training was the best course that I have taken ever.
I could contact with Austrian students an experienced quite different atmosphere and concitions of classroom, of course. Also I gave students the lesson something related to Korean culture and we shared lots of differences between Europe and South Korea. I tried to give them more detailed information and was suprised because students were really curious about situation of Korea division.”
• ”It was my first time to give lecture to students, and with the help of the teacher in the school, I could get some information about the students in advance, so I could prepapre what I should cover during the class. Students were really motivated to learn, and me and my colleague got good feedback.”
25
The most valuable experience in the teaching practice (examples)
• I talked and discussed with Finnish students
• Teaching together with other teacher
• I could compare… the way of English education… communication is more important than grammar or vocabulary…they give students spekaing tasks
• Korea and Finland are in high level of education as you can see in Pisa rank. However, two countries’ education system are totally different. In this point, it was very valuable experience to me as a future teacher !!!

My first successful lesson in Austria! I taught 11 year-old children about Asia. They were really concentrated on what I was saying during lesson. I was really surprised by their attention and active participation. They did really well and I was happy to teach them geographical and cultural things in Asia. I hope they are now familiar with Asia! :) -Kim 2011

KE-LeGE as a global learning environment • Enthusiastic, good atmosphere in the project activities• KE-LeGE exchange was an important and useful
experience, opened the eyes and increased the understanding of oneself as well as the cultural understanding
• Cultures and also partly pedagogical approaches and practices differ enough to provide a really interesting learning environment
• Students have been motivated to learn also informally about the life and culture (the extra-curricular activities) aboard, they have spent their time with "locals"
• Facebook site made visible the entire community of the project, how we are connected and belong together
29
Kulttuuriosaamisen moninaisuus
