FESTIVALS IN THE USA
REMEMBER
• There are no national holidays in theUSA. Each state has the right to decideabout its own holiday. Most statescelebrate the federal public holidays. Let´s find out more information aboutsome of them
CHRISTMAS
• Santa Claus is pictured as a cheerful fat man with long white beard and dressed in a red suit
• Children believe that he lives at the North Pole where he makes toys for good children during a year
• There is a tradition of leaving a glass of milk and chocolate cookies for his reindeer Rudolph
• The Americans decorate their Christmas tree at homeand they also decorate their houses with wreaths and electric coloured lights
• Christmas in the USA is not a typical family holiday like in our country. The Americans invite friends for dinner and often give parties at Christmas
EASTER
• ´Most Americans spend Easter with the family• The adults give children dyed eggs and sweets• In some families they organize an egg hunt – the
adults hide the eggs somewhere in the house orgarden and children look for them
• Also the President has an annual Easter egg hunt on the lawn around the White House
• The don´t know anything about „pomlázka“
THANKSGIVING DAY
• It is celebrated on the last Thursday in November• It is a feast of giving thanks to God• It remembers the first settlers – Pilgrim Fathers who came from
England to the USA in 1620. After a bad year they shared theirfirst harvest with Native Americans in 1621
• The whole family gathers together and enjoys a traditionaldinner – roast turkey and apple or pumpkin pie
• This is the day of gifts, charities and food for poor people
INDEPENDENCE DAY
• It is celebrated on July 4th• This day commemorates the signing the Declaration
of Independence in 1776 and the Americans takethis day as the birthday of the USA
• Each city has its own ceremony and parades, band concerts and fireworks
LABOUR DAY
• It is celebrated on the first Mondayin September
• It honours all the working people• It is celebrated by a day of rest
COLUMBUS DAY
• It is celebrated on the second Monday in October
• It is an anniversary of the discovery ofAmerica by Christopher Columbus on October 12th, 1492
VALENTINE´S DAY
• It is celebrated on February 14th• It is the day of all lovers that is why
many things are in a red colour.• They send loving postcards to each
other
HALLOWEEN
• It is celebrated on the last day of October• It is a celebration of witches, ghosts and goblins• Children dress up in funny or ghostly costumes and knock at
neigbours´ door. After shouting „Trick or Treat!“ they get gifts orcandy
• Many homes are decorated by jack-o´-lanterns = pumpkinswith horrible faces
