mail.

Hi, Susan,
I was browsing through my mail when I came across a forwarded message with the anagram HIPPO
I got me curious so I opened it and it read as follows:
Plants and animals are in danger of extinction. Here’s why!
HIPPO
H – Habitat loss: deforestation and development
I – Inadequate awareness: people not aware of seriousness of situation
P – Pollution: water, land and air pollution
P – Population growth: human needs for land
O – Over harvesting: hunted for food
I read through it and found it to be very accurate and relevant to the environmental problem of plant
and animal endangered species. (1) ___________________ loss is a major issue and is affecting the
survival of (2) ____________________. (3) ______________________ for development is fatal to
animals and plants. Is there really (4) ______________________ of the seriousness of the situation
as there is very obviously (5) _______________________ of water, land and air? As there is (6)
_______________________ growth worldwide, there is a need for land and food. As a result, animal
are (7) _______________________ and plants and marine life are (8) _______________________
for food. Unfortunately, there is (9) _______________________. The next time you are asked to
give (10) _______________________ for environmental problems say, HIPPO!
Cheerio for now,
Lilian

Danilo : I normally get up at 4.00 a.m. and I go to the shore of Old Poblacion Beach in
Maitun
Reporter : (2)
_______________________________________________________________
Danilo : My purpose of going there is to look for newly-laid marine turtle eggs.
Reporter : (3)
_______________________________________________________________
Danilo : I will look for a patch of sand that appears to have been disturbed by a turtle.
Reporter : (4)
_______________________________________________________________
Danilo : I will study the area carefully to figure out where the eggs have been buried
and then start digging slowly.
Reporter : (5)
_______________________________________________________________
Danilo : I will pick them up one at a time and put them into a pail and take them to my
hatchery. I usually find about 80 – 100 eggs.
Reporter : (6)_____________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
Danilo : My hatchery is some 50 metres away from the seashore. The hatchery is just a
sandy patch of land the coconut trees enclosed by a black fine-mesh fence.
Round

Danilo : I put them in a basin and carry them to the shore and release them into the sea.
Reporter : (8)_____________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
Danilo : I feel sad when I release them because only one per cent will survive to
adulthood because of predators. I do this as this is my way of contributing to the
protection and conservation of marine turtles.
