Pendekatan hubungan satuan-satuan pembangun kerangka (satuan-satuan
mol NaOH/H2O tinggi: MOR (induk) campuran (GIS+ANA+SOD)
campuran (CAN+ANA) ANA, pada rasio mol NaOH/H2O sedang: MOR (induk)
ANA CAN, dan pada rasio mol NaOH/H2O rendah: MOR (induk)
campuran (ANA+GIS) ANA.
(SPK: sod; SPS: 6). Berdasarkan tinjauan urutan KK (ANA > MOR = SOD > CAN
Kedua tipe kerangka tersebu diperoleh melalui
urutan tahap transformasi sebagai berikut: MOR (induk) GIS ANA CAN

ABSTRACT
INTERZEOLITE TRANSFORMATIONS USING MORDENITE
AS PARENT ZEOLITE

The building unit relationship approach was used by some research groups
although it has not been sufficiently tested in all cases of interzeolite transformation
ever reported. There is also an assumption that zeolite transformation tends to
produce zeolite type/s with higher framework densities (FD/s), although there are
a few cases of transformation that produced zeolite types with lower FD/s.
This research aims to study the interzeolite transformation using the MOR-type as
parent zeolite, including the different building units and framework density of MOR
compared with the resulting products, the factors that may affect the
transformations, and possible mechanisms that can occur in those transformations.
To achieve these objectives, the mordenite was hydrothermally treated in NaOH
solutions, 46 treatments in various NaOH concentrations (in the mole ratio of
NaOH/H2O = 0.003 0.400) at 150 °C for 12 hours, seven treatments in various temperature (less and more than 150 °C) and seven treatments in various time
duration (less and more than 12 hours). The parent material used as a source of
mordenite was a homogeneous mixture of solid products obtained from several
times the mordenite synthesis. The parent material and the resulting solids were
further confirmed and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning
electron microscopy (SEM), and infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR method). The
presence of impurities of the magadiite and pollucite phases were detected in parent
material, but from the comparison of transformation products with a number of
studies of natural mordenite treatment analogous to this study it is certain that their
presence has no significant effect on the interzeolite transformation phenomenon
of MOR.
From the results of the parent material treatment on the variation of NaOH
concentration indicated that the transformation product can generally be mapped
into the mole coordinates of NaOH and H2O. In general, this mapping yielded three
transformation product groups, ie cancrinite (CAN) in high mole ratio of
NaOH/H2O > 0.116), analcime (ANA) in moderate (NaOH/H2O < 0.116 and
NaOH/SiO2 > 1.00), and mixtures (MOR+ANA+GIS) in low (NaOH/SiO2 < 1.00)
concentrations of NaOH solutions. From time dependent study, the sequence of
transformation in high NaOH/H2O mole ratio: MOR mixture (GIS+ANA+SOD)
mixture (CAN+ANA) ANA, moderate NaOH/H2O: MOR ANA CAN,
and low NaOH/H2O: MOR mixture (ANA+GIS) ANA were observed. At
iv
higher temperature and high NaOH/H2O, transformations produce CAN, at
moderate concentrations tend to yield CAN, and at low concentrations tend to yield
ANA. At lower temperature the treatment tend to result a mixture of phases with
low crystallinity, ie MOR+GIS+ANA+SOD mixture in high NaOH/H2O mole ratio,
and a mixture of GIS+ANA in moderate NaOH/H2O.
Based on the obtained zeolite types, the occurrence of MOR transformation can not
be attributed to building unit relationships, ANA (without CBU, SBU’s: 4, 4[1,1],
1-4-1, 6, and 6-2), CAN (CBU’s: dzc and can, SBU’s: 4, 6, and 12), GIS (CBU’s:
dcc and gis; SBU’s: 4 and 8), and SOD (CBU: sod; SBU: 6). Based on the order
value of FD’s (ANA > MOR = SOD > CAN > GIS), the MOR transformations were
not affected by the framework densities. The two high purity phases obtained from
the MOR transformation were ANA and CAN-types with the impurities are
influenced by NaOH concentration (NaOH/H2O) and its solution volume, time, and
temperature. Both zeolite types were obtained through the following transformation
sequences: MOR (parent) GIS ANA CAN at moderate NaOH
concentration and MOR (parent) SOD CAN ANA in concentrated NaOH concentration.
